12.01.2022 Community fund raising for medical research can really make a difference. Thank you to the Inner Wheel Club of Belrose for their donation to our ovarian cancer research program in memory of a club member. 11.01.2022 The human genome ... we are all fascinated by our "blueprint". The latest estimate of the number of genes that we have is 21,306 that contain the information to make our proteins. Back before the start of the Human Genome Project, we thought we would have many more genes, maybe as many as 100,000. The thoughts were along the lines that we are so complex, we must have heaps of genes making up our complexity. What we are increasingly learning; however, is that our biological co...mplexity is contributed to by many layers of regulation of how our genes are expressed. It is difficult to say when we will reach a "definitive" number of genes. Technology is improving all the time and as scientists, there is still so much to learn, not only about the number of our genes, but more importantly how they function to keep us well, and conversely what is happening to our genetic code in diseases such as cancer. 09.01.2022 Many of us have been on tenterhooks this last 6 months or so as we have watched our past labmate deal so bravely with her daughter's diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. Christine has shared her family's story in the link below with the goal of raising awareness of childhood cancer and the need for research to improve the outcomes for these kids. Just at the end of her treatment, the news is looking positive for Becky and her beautiful family. ... https://www.thekidscancerproject.org.au//se/becky-s-story

02.01.2022 Today, the Kolling Institute Tumour Bank teamed up with the Northern Clinical School to host an Australia's Biggest Morning Tea to raise funds for the Cancer Council to support cancer research. This morning reaffirmed my long held belief, supported by many years of evidence, that the vast majority of scientists are great cooks! Special thanks to Mikaela Holmes and Shannon Chan from the Tumour Bank end for pulling this together and to all who baked and made the morning work. ...A big feature of this morning for fund raising was the raffle. We would specifically like to acknowledge these businesses for contributing raffle prizes - Fancy That Costumes in Crows Nest, Hudson's Coffee at North Shore Private Hospital, Bunnings at Artarmon, Priceline at St Leonards (The Forum) and Pierre Fabre at North Sydney. As well, there was a Gift Basket donated by the Northern Clinical School Staff & Students, fruit cake donated by Dr Dindy Benn and a tea mug donated by Ussha Pillai from our Tumour Bank team. Thank you also to Burcu Karlsson from the Clinical School.
