25.01.2022 Today, someone somewhere is having their best day... Someone somewhere just received the all-clear from cancer. Someone somewhere fell in love. Someone somewher...e got the promotion. Someone somewhere passed the test. Someone somewhere met their baby for the first time. Someone somewhere stood up and demanded that life take notice of them and their dreams. Someone somewhere realised that life is a gift. Today, someone, somewhere is having the best day of their life and someone is having their worst. If that is you, hold on tight. Tomorrow could be your best day. Life is not predictable, this we know now more than we ever have. Stay in the game my friend, Your day is on its way. 22.01.2022 I got this commode chair for a delightful 95yo lady. . Its a rather small commode as my client is tiny, 4 foot tall and not too many inches. It has a padded pressure care seat to protect her fragile skin, lockable castor wheels and flip up arm rests.

20.01.2022 Three Tip Tuesday . Breast swelling . There are many different compression and therapy options if you have swelling or tightness of the breast after Cancer surgery...... . 1. The Bellisse bra (as shown in the pic) promotes good coverage of the breast and the side of your trunk (which is a very common site for ongoing swelling after mastectomy). The fabric is nice and soft, offers pockets for a prosthesis or other pads, and is very adjustable re width and comfort . 2. You can use use things like Mobiderm, chip pads or contoured pads to help soften the tissues and promote drainage . 3. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) - a good way to stimulate the lymphatic system to increase fluid flow. You need to use a therapist who has qualifications in this area. They can show you how to complete your own self drainage techniques at home . Breast swelling can be managed with the right garments and specialised input into your own specific circumstances . Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions . See more

18.01.2022 "Good morning I ordered the spillnot a couple of weeks ago and it is absolutely fantastic. I use it everyday. I have ms and experience balance and mobility issu...es. I was always asking one of my two teenage children to carry my drink to the sofa in the living room from the kitchen each evening. I would inevitably spill it on the floor 9/10 times. My children were happy to do this but one day my son said he’s found something on TikTok that he thought would be perfect for me! It was the SpillNot! I went to the website and ordered one straight away. And yes he was right it is perfect for me. Thank you My friends and family were also impressed with it." See more

17.01.2022 Ageing isnt about lost youth, Its about finding... Who your true friends really are.... The difference between shiny and worthy. The confidence to be yourself in any room. The time to dedicate to the things that bring you joy. The wisdom to say no to the things that dont. The freedom to choose your own path in life. The courage to be happy in your own skin. The knowledge that very little really truly matters, in the end. Ageing isnt about lost youth, my friends, no it is not. I havent lost a thing, in fact. Except perhaps, my ability to give a toss, about the things that wont matter when Im gone. And remember, not everyone gets the chance to grow older. It truly is a privilege denied to many. No, ageing isnt about lost youth, Its about finding... Finding out, who you were meant to be, all along. 16.01.2022 I have a big and handsome (& furry) OT assistant with me this afternoon . Getting in the car so I could do a couple of home visits, and Mr OT assistant was super scared of the thunder (which happened to occur at the same time as me trying to get in the car). So he jumps in the car and was not getting out. . He would not listen to reason or be compliant in any way to remove himself from the car, even with the reward of a treat. ... . So, OT assistant he is today.... See more

12.01.2022 "No one tells you about the after effects of cancer, only about getting rid of the cancer. I found it really hard both during and after my treatment to accept... how much my body had changed and to get use to the new me. Doing weekly cancer rehab throughout motivated me to keep going and to get stronger. I think if I hadnt been able to participate in Pinc & Steel cancer rehab with Jonty I would have been less active, and much less motivated. Everyone with a cancer diagnosis should be able to get help, even if its a little bit each week it really helps both the body and the mind to recover!" 10.01.2022 Men. You’re known for bottling things up, but it is just as important to take care of mind as it is your body. On average, 1 in 8 men will experience depression... at some stage in their life, so it is important not to go at it alone when those feelings creep in. We’ve got some suggestions to help you out: Get enough sleep (8 hours is recommended) Make exercise a priority Stay connected and spend time with mates Talk about how you’re feeling (with a trusted friend) #InternationalMensDay #Movember #MensHealth

09.01.2022 Can cancer rehab help those with ADVANCED CANCER There are many people in our communities living with advanced cancer, and due to advances in treatments they... are living for much longer than ever before. This is making living well during the years after a life limiting diagnosis more vitally important to address. Despite a growing interest around what constitutes quality of life for those with such a diagnosis, the majority of this expanding sector of the population are still missing out on cancer rehabilitation. THIS MUST CHANGE. Studies have found that some of the most distressing concerns for the advanced cancer population are functional decline, dependency and uncontrolled symptoms. Symptom burden has been identified as the greatest contributor to a lower quality of life. These studies, and others are the reason why identifying and treating sources of functional compromise that can be minimized or eliminated, is absolutely necessary for those with advanced cancer. These are the aspects of living well where participation in cancer rehabilitation can offer the biggest impacts. The areas of decline that cannot be eliminated and are inevitably experienced by those with advancing cancer can often be decelerated by participation in cancer rehabilitation, meaning that functional decline does not have to go hand in hand with helplessness <3. 09.01.2022 Be there for the messy parts of someones life. Dont be afraid of the ugly. Hold someones hand when no one else can, Or will. Pull them to stand.... Be there for the dark moments and then enjoy the light together. Dont take a seat at a celebratory table, if you wont be there to collect the shattered pieces when that same world falls apart. Its easy to get an invite to someones pretty, someones sparkly, but if you get invited to someones raw and real... Show up, you have been blessed. Thats friendship. 09.01.2022 To say that Margaret is happy with her new wheelchair is an understatement!! . She LOVES it . Margaret had a left above-knee amputation in January this year and has been in a loan wheelchair since then ... . She is now the proud owner of a new manual wheelchair that suits her needs - it HAD to be green, and her cushion had to keep her bum happy, since she is sitting in the chair most of the day . I bought her a black coffee just the way she likes it, with a green balloon to celebrate . Happy days See more

07.01.2022 This obscure photo is an adjustable chair raiser under a recliner chair . The client to whom the recliner belongs uses a wheelchair for his mobility . Having the chair raiser in place allows him to get in and out of his main lounge chair much easier and safer, plus it is secure and stable when he reclines... . Before the chair raiser, he was having a lot of difficulty transferring to the chair due to the height difference between his chair and wheelchair. Now the seats are the same height, he can go back & forth a lot easier! . Winning See more

05.01.2022 3 weeks after surgery Fracture of the tibeal plateau - pins and plates to both sides of the tibea . My wounds healed in 2 weeks, which is a desired outcome in the wound healing world. The longer a wound takes to heal, it means more scar tissue is laid down and the risk of infection is higher. I have been gently moving the skin below and around my knee as it's super tight. Pliability of the skin and tissues helps to get more movement around the knee joint . I'm able to... get around a lot easier on crutches now - although as I'm building muscles I didn't know I had in my arms, my leg muscles are shrinking to 'tuck shop / batwing' legs - skinny with a hint of flab! My triceps muscles are on point for the many triceps dips I do when bum shuffling up the stairs a couple of times a day . I still can't put any weight on my leg for another 3.5 weeks so the one legged frustration continues . However I am grateful for the temporary nature of my injury. I'm also very grateful that my husband is Carer Numero Uno - he's done a great job being my Uber driver, Cook, and General all-round 'can you get me that...' . 04.01.2022 Last week I got to wear this nice hat and scrubs and watch our Vascular Surgeon perform a couple of surgeries . One of the surgeries was an RFA (Radiofrequency Ablation) used to treat varicose veins . The other surgery was a release of a Popliteal Artery Entrapment (meaning that the artery running down behind the knee was getting squashed by the calf muscle, which resulted in a lot of pain). This surgery was amazing and being able to see some of the structures of the leg ...was pretty good . Watching surgery certainly gives you a deeper insight into our amazing anatomy and an appreciation of the skill of the surgeon and theatre nurses . See more

04.01.2022 Head and Neck Cancer treatment . Can affect the ability to communicate . This man is no longer able to produce sound and so cannot talk. All of his communication for the rest of his life will involve writing his words and thoughts, plus using gesture to make himself understood. Be grateful that you can communicate freely ... . Reduces neck movement in all directions . There are ongoing feelings of deep ache, pain, tightness, tension, and an overwhelming tiredness from a constant state of dysfunction. It affects this man's ability to bend down, as putting his chin to his chest can block off his airway. Also he has very slow healing wounds on his chest from the radiation treatment . Leads to swelling and radiation fibrosis . When multiple lymph nodes are removed from the sides and front of the neck, and the remaining tissues are radiated, it often leads to a swollen, firm textured skin that results in tightness, poor drainage, and reduced movement. This man describes (via writing and gesture) that his neck feels like a rock, with ongoing contractions of his skin which extends into his airway . I have been humbled to work with this man, and to use my skills to help treat the severe after effects of his cancer treatment. His journey will still be a long one, however it is nice to be able to make a small difference along the way . See more

02.01.2022 Three commonly known types of arthritis that may affect the small joints in the fingers are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Arthritis is characte...rised by inflammation and damage to joint cartilage that occurs on the surface of the bones where they meet. When the cartilage becomes damaged, the joints become inflamed. This can result in joint pain, weakness, instability and deformities reducing an individuals ability to function and participate in daily activities. Your hand therapist can help by tailoring a treatment program towards your individual symptoms, needs, goals and lifestyle. Treatment aims to alleviate symptoms, support and protect the joints, as well as strengthen the supporting soft tissues e.g. muscles. See more
