25.01.2022 Great to catch up with Candice from Nutritionally Ahead Dietetics this week. Great to work closely with local therapists to provide the best and holistic care Excess weight loss can be the biggest factor limiting exercise tolerance (even greater than severity of lung disease!!!) So it's vitally important to get professional advice to help keep that weight and muscle!! Check them out @nutritionallyahead ... P.s. how sweet are their cards!! Bit jealous #functionallungs #wollongong

25.01.2022 Breath By James Nestor This new bestseller is a recount of James Nestor's experience in discovering breathing therapy (what we do here at Functional Lungs ) ... Since it came out I've had a constant stream of questions asking my opinion on the novel and many of the stories he uses to portray his journey. In summary I think it's absolutely great. He does a great job at not only creating a captivating novel but explains many facets of breathing and breathing therapy that are often quite difficult to explain!!! Some parts in my opinion may be a little over embellished and a few good therapies didn't make the cut, but overall a great recount into the great work of breathing therapies!

16.01.2022 RESEARCH Most of you know that here at Functional Lungs we love research and evidence-based practice. What most of you don't know is that I have a published paper... And it has nothing to do with breathing ... I wrote this paper during my honours year at Sydney uni and was super pumped when I got published as a first author in 2017 Vibration induced illusions are a novel area of science looking as the neuroplastic (ever changing) pathways in the brain and whilst not directly related to breathing similar concepts can be seen in the way we perceive, interpret and treat breathlessness. #physiocanhelp #breathebetter #functionallungs

12.01.2022 Phrenic Nerve Recovery! - WATCH UNTIL THE END Presentation 6 months post phrenic nerve damage second to amyotrophic neuralgia. Initial scans demonstrated severe paradoxical movement of the right diaphragm with patient orthopnea + SOBOE. ... Now after 3 months of PT we can see a restoration of normal diaphragm movement during slow inhalation (first 2 breaths) with significantly improved symptom profile! Paradoxical movement persists during SNIF (last 3 breaths) demonstrating still more work to be done! Ultrasound reference: - probe on abdomen looking up at diaphragm - thick white line is the diaphragm - as diaphragm descends it moves towards the probe in the abdomen (which is reflected as moving up the screen (normal) - paradoxical movement is demonstrated by the diaphragm moving away from the probe and down the screen (abnormal) #postedwithconsent #health #research #respiratory #physiotherapy

03.01.2022 ACTIVITY TRACKING We love activity tracking at functional lungs!! Accountablity, motivation and goal setting wrapped up in a tight ball ... Whilst step count isnt the only important marker in pulmonary rehab it's a great way to track progression and see real time improvements 10 000 steps is a good general marker it's not necessarily for everyone. I often start people off with 1000 steps if their tolerance for exercise is limited and work up for there.. 1100, 1200, 1500 etc. At Functional Lungs we are here to help tailer a program to you current capacity to ensure improvements and growth whilst avoided overtraining and fatigue #physiocanhelp #breathingmuscles #breathingtechniques loo
