25.01.2022 On Friday, I did a service in the old Mechanics Hall in Warburton. Unusual venue beautifully restored and modernized with benches with sheepskins thrown over to sit on, benches off the wall that people could sit on as well. It is called Projekt 3488. It was a lovely service for someone who lived in the area and although it was a bit heart stopping when they carried her to the hearse, with a windy path and uneven bricks, but it all went well. There were lots of laughs whe...n during the photos there was a very suspicious looking plant, looking lush and healthy. After the photos had finished, I said she obviously loved her greens! Her brother in law suggested it could be a tomato plant, again everyone roared with laughter! I received a lovely message last night from her partner who wrote "I just wanted to say again that we all thought your reading of the eulogy and conduct of the service was absolutely perfect. You weren't just reading words on a page and injected just the right amount of respect, warmth and feeling which touched everybody. Once again thank you. Can you tell why I love my job?

21.01.2022 40 years ago today, Lionel Murphy, the then Attorney General appointed the first civil celebrants to be able to conduct marriages for those who did not want to be married in the church but wanted a more dignified and personalised service than what was offered by the then registry office. A man of vision, if it was not for him, the marrying public would not have the plethora (some might say too many) of celebrants we have today. We who have been appointed have much to be grateful for ... we are blessed to be able to perform marriages that are personal, meaningful and sacred without the confines of organised religion. All celebrants appointed embrace Lionel's vision and passion for a beautiful and meaningful wedding ceremony.

19.01.2022 From the very talented Gwyn Davies from England - this sums up so well what we do: Celebrant, Celebrant, what is it you do? Im a little old fashioned, and havent a clue. Celebrant, Celebrant, what is it you do?... Are you religious, or is that taboo? Who is your target, where is your goal? Im a little confused, as to what is your role. Are you religious, or the atheist sort, Im a bit in the dark and need to be taught. Well let me enlighten, Ill try and explain, Im there as a person to try ease the pain. It isnt about me or any belief, I try help the loved ones to help with their grief. Theres more than two options, to help people through, So Ill try and explain, what us Celebrants do. We take an approach, with a personal touch, For loved ones in need of the help for a crutch. Some arent religious, but still want a prayer, Or even a hymn, and were happy to share. It just shouldnt matter in our belief, Well use an approach, that helps bring relief. So each service it varies, and that is our aim, Each service is special, and no two the same. So as you can see, its not black or white, We offer a service that we just try make right. Right for the person, whos life has passed on, And try to help those hurting, as they loved one as gone. We tick all the boxes, some people say, We try to make it special, in our own unique way. Times are a changing, changing so fast, We must try to move forward, not stuck in the past. So, we are here when you need us, give us a try, Just take a look, therell be one close by.

18.01.2022 Today, I conducted a service where we said farewell to a lovely wife, mum and nanna, this was the third funeral I had done for this family and people become very special to you. When I asked her husband what he would like, he said to me "I loved her, what more is there to say?" He was very clearly heartbroken. The lady loved dancing, from ballroom when she was young, to rock 'n roll and then about 20 years bootscootin'. At the end of the service, we finished with Rock Around ...the Clock and her husband who was in his 80's turned to the lady's sister and started jiving with her... the whole chapel was clapping along and it was just such a beautiful sight, everyone was grappling for their phones to take videos of it. I couldn't help but think how happy his wife would have been that everyone left the chapel with smiles on their faces even if there were a few misty eyes like mine. See more

13.01.2022 Yesterday I went to my friend Flo's funeral, at almost 99 years of age, I was disappointed to hear the celebrant refer to 'a good innings' while I know that it is a common term in Australia, it is not one I like. As a participant rather than officiant, it is hard to look at a funeral without critiquing it! However it was lovely to be able to speak about her and share some of her quirky ways which brought a laugh. I wrote this verse for her, just titled Flo: For almost 99 y...ears you roamed this earth, always bringing such good cheer Although life wasnt always easy, you faced it with no fear Flo you really were a special person, a friend to all you knew So how can we say goodbye today, to that beautiful soul that was you? We know your life will go on, although we cannot touch you or see Youll be there in our hearts, watching over us you will always be Well hear you in the wind that blows and see you in a star And take comfort that youll care for us, even though you are afar Your family you would talk about, with such pride there in your voice Always planning on your 100th birthday, with you we wanted to rejoice We cant do that now and for this reason we feel sad But looking back on your life, to have known you we are glad Go now on your journey Flo, travel safe to the love and light we know that Ron will be there waiting and together you will delight in seeing each other again and that brings a glow to our heart For we know this is but one part of our journey, your new life is about to start!

10.01.2022 I have just realised that I should have celebrated my 10th year of being in business last Saturday, although probably I should celebrate on March 8th, when I conducted my very first funeral... either way, 1,000+ lives celebrated .... I'm still happy to have THE best job in the world :)

09.01.2022 Isn't it interesting that even after 15 years in this role, that there are little things that people do that really touch you. I received a text the other day, the same day of the funeral, from a daughter who said "it was so much more than I expected, it was a lovely send off and you were amazing". And people ask me how on earth I can do a job like that? This makes it all worthwhile!

01.01.2022 I have just finished watching the live stream of Maya Angelou's funeral... it was interesting, although now here it is almost 3am lol... it was a memorial service, for family only (in a broad sense) but broadcast around the world. I was very glad to hear Leanne Womak sing I Hope You Dance, a song I think is most appropriate for a celebration of a life. Maya was certainly an amazing woman... and who will ever forget her most famous quote "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel".
