25.01.2022 [ Juice cleansing 101 ] . Feel the need to do a juice cleanse to detox? Most juice fasts arent actually helping with detoxification and are probably hindering it. Yes, even the home-delivered cleanses that cost $100 a day . Detoxification is a metabolic process by which toxins are changed into less toxic/more readily excretable substances. Your liver is the first port of call. Skin, breath, pee, poo and lymph are other important ways your body exports toxins.... . There are 3 phases of detoxification, the first two of which occur in the liver. . For phase 1 detoxification to work properly your body needs to be getting vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, glutathione, amino acids (which protein breaks down to), antioxidants such as flavonoids, and minerals copper, zinc and magnesium. So basically, you need to eat food and get a little sunlight. . Phase 2 (also known as conjugation) puts the toxic metabolites from phase 1 into a water-soluble form so they can be excreted from the body. Each of the 6 different conjugation pathways break down different kinds of substances, and they all need numerous vitamins, glutathione, amino acids, and a bunch of other minerals to work. Again, food is required. . The problem with juice fasts is that theres no protein coming in. Whether its for 1, 3 or 7 days.. the amino acids your liver needs to keep detoxification going stop coming in. . Without protein, detoxification comes to a grinding halt. Your liver slows down, and the body has to get rid of toxins via other routes. Those acne outbreaks arent a beneficial cleansing reaction - theyre a sign your liver is unable to do its job as efficiently and your skin has become a route for toxin removal. . Also, since veggie juice has had the fibre removed, it becomes a lot more taxing for your bowel to move faeces out of your body. Hey constipation! . In summary: Cleanses are bullsh!t. Save your money for real food and live your life. See more

21.01.2022 [ Dieting: the strongest predictor of weight gain ] . Youve probably heard this already, but just in case you havent: 95% of all folks who attempt weight loss, eventually gain all the weight back (within 2 to 5 years). And in the 5% of people who do succeed, weight loss is only 5-10% of starting body weight. Which means these folks are still stigmatised for being in larger bodies; theyre just hungrier. . Note: we are not saying weight gain is bad, just that dieting does no...t hold up on its promise, and in fact is highly likely to have the opposite effect to that intended. . This, and other mic drops - including what to do instead of dieting - over at Episode 10, with The Intuitive Dietitian - Intuitive Eating . 20.01.2022 [ The trouble with Essential Oil MLMs ] I know I know, this is controversial AF. But given the number of folks I have seen hurt by these companies (whether financially, physically or psychologically), it has to be said. Multilevel marketing essential oil giants dTERRA and Young Living: Are major drivers of wellness capitalism, by making essential oils inaccessible to those who can’t afford their astronomically inflated prices (MLM oils cost double or triple what a non-MLM ...equivalent costs) Do not encourage the user to develop an appreciation of indigenous or traditional use, nor a meaningful relationship with the plants beyond this for that Encourage oral ingestion of essential oils without professional supervision, which can be highly dangerous (cases of essential oil poisonings have skyrocketed as these companies have expanded (Ref: https://www.mja.com.au//essential-oil-exposures-australia-) Allow / encourage their distributors to share questionable COVID "cures" via social media Promote one-size-fits-all herbalism that does not consider individual constitution, life stage etc Promotes massive over harvesting of medicinal herbs by spreading the misinformation that essential oils are the essence of the plant (thereby negating the need for other, more affordable, less resource- and plant- intensive forms of herbal medicine) ...and upwards of 92% (usually closer to 99%) of folks who buy into these companies end up losing money overall, due to being lured into buying $$s in oils each month by promises of financial freedom and independence (Ref: https://tinyurl.com/q5t7syy) Thank you to Katya Weiss-Andersson for this illuminating conversation! 19.01.2022 [ Is your period missing or irregular? ] . Hypothalamic amenorrhoea (HA) is a common reason why previously menstruating people find their periods have stopped - more common, in my experience, than PCOS. . HA has surged with the popularity of high intensity, high volume workout regimes, and/or fad dieting (paleo, keto, vegan, or just generally restricting calories or carbs). ... . Still got a period but noticed it’s becoming scanty or infrequent? Cycles shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days are considered irregular, and can be a sign that you’re not actually ovulating, or that your period is on its way out. The technical term is oligomenorrhoea, and it can be driven by the same things that cause HA: under eating and/or over exercising. . When a person's energy balance doesn’t meet their body’s needs - whether due to reduced food intake, increased exercise, or both - the body shunts precious resources to organs and systems that are essential to survival, such as the brain, and suppresses energy-intensive processes like menstruation and growth. . Some folks think a less frequent or missing period is no big deal, a blessing, or even a sign of cleanliness but low energy availability can decrease your body's production of sex hormones, which can lead to a bunch of problems you REALLY don’t want: . Dry, brittle hair and nails Recurrent injury and illness Fatigue Poor sleep and insomnia Changes in mood e.g. anxiety or depression Lower bone mineral density, increasing risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis Infertility . Missing or anovulatory periods mean you can’t get pregnant, which is devastating for folks who have decided they want to have a baby, only to find they have no signs of ovulation and/or no period. . It’s important to remember that people of all sizes who under eat can lose their periods, or keep them. They may ovulate or not ovulate. They may be able to conceive or they may not. Regardless of your period status, if you have issues with food, body or eating, please be gentle with yourself and seek the professional help you need. You deserve to get better! See more

18.01.2022 [ Dear white yoga/wellness influencers: your anti-racism posts feel fake ] . I know the typical rising yoga influencer posting BLM memes is probably a caring person. A person who means no harm. And in the last few months Ive seen many of these folks repost BIPOC positive memes... whilst 99% of their feeds remain a sea of white, cis-het, able-bodied women doing yoga on beaches. . I have some feedback for these folks: your BLM posts feel disingenuous.... . Ive resisted the temptation to post BLM stuff as a way of reassuring everyone that Im strongly supportive of BIPOC and oppose the systemic oppression they face (which of course I am). There have been times when Ive felt that posting a black square would help me feel like I have met the quota required for appearing to give a shit (and I vehemently do give a shit.) . And. I have intentionally not posted memes stating no one is superior with a single love heart emoji or similarly brief caption. Not that I think that folks doing this is wrong.. its great, its a start. . AND as a yoga teacher and (possible) wellness influencer Im extremely wary of falling into the camp of yoga/spirituality/wellness people who post disingenuous pro-inclusivity memes yet havent actually done THE WORK. . Ive sat with the unsettling realisation that what people think about me possibly felt more crucial than doing my own internal work dismantling white supremacy. That has been uncomfortable. So instead of reactionary posting, I decided to give myself time to get working. . Because I dont want to post a meme with a half arsed caption as a way to remain socially acceptable and morally palatable. I want to be accountable to anyone who wants to know more about what Im actually doing to dismantle white supremacy in my business and personal life. . SO. Ive been unpacking the ways systemic racism colours the way I see the world, donating (although this alone is not enough), educating myself, and trying to figure out what I can do beyond just posting warm fuzzy memes. Ive been having tough conversations with family who are openly racist. And Ive got a long way to go. . Next podcast episode @nondietyogi will cover this topic in depth :) See more

18.01.2022 [ Ep 11: Foraging Edible Weeds with Pat Collins ] Foraging for edible weeds is an accessible and inclusive healthcare practice. Its a way of enjoying nutrient-dense food and land-based medicine that does NOT require the degree of privilege that buying a $15 superfood smoothie in a juice bar does. Ive enjoyed foraging since my days as an inner-city dumpster diving, cash-strapped uni student. And to this day, the freedom, wellbeing, and connection to the land I feel when I fo...rage and wildcraft is not easy to describe in words. Suffice to say, I want you to experience it too :) Pat Collins is a highly experienced herbalist, natural health practitioner and bush craftswoman with a passion for sharing her foraging know-how and instilling in people a deep appreciation of edible and medicinal weeds. Or as Pat calls them, natures gifts. It was wonderful to speak with her in my latest podcast episode. She is a wise elder in every sense. Listen to Episode 11 of the Non-Diet Yogi wherever you hear podcasts, or at: https://www.funkyforest.com.au//wildly-accessible-food-med Second picture is Chickweed, my weedy love affair of the moment :)

17.01.2022 [ Are carbs non-essential? ] . Carbohydrates, and how important a role they play in our diets, take the cake for being the most contentious macronutrient right now. On one end of the spectrum we have those who claim carbs are non-essential, and cause all manner of chronic disease. On the other end are fruitarians saying that 80% of our calories should come from carbs, specifically raw fruit . No wonder people are confused AF about carbs!... . As someone who works mostly with people with ovaries, my experience is that most people really struggle on these extreme ends of the spectrum - be it the keto crossfitter, the raw vegan who cycles 300 km a week, or the LCHF new mum. . Im not here to say what works for EVERYbody. But I have some thoughts on what does NOT work for MANY bodies. Too low carb, for too long can increase cortisol production, which throws a bunch of hormones out of whack. Too low protein and fat (ala 80-10-10) can wreak havoc too. . In particular, there are a few groups of people whose health really suffers on a strict low carb paleo or keto diet: . women who are trying to conceive, are pregnant or newly postpartum anyone with an eating disorder or disordered eating (obvi) - these folks are very susceptible to incorporating low carb diets into their ED for health reasons athletes (particularly endurance, crossfitters, and weightlifters - carbs are crucial!) folks with HPA axis dysfunction (aka adrenal fatigue) and/or hypothyroidism folks with gut issues like IBS or dysbiosis, for whom limiting carb intake leads to a further reduction in gut microflora diversity . For these people, the benefits of getting adequate carbs again can be seriously life changing: . enhanced mood better athletic performance skin improvements more energy normalised menstrual function improved fertility better breastmilk production better quality sleep improved cognitive function vastly reduced sugar cravings & food obsession. . To be clear, keto CAN help children with epilepsy who are non-responsive to medication. . But for most of my clients, carbs ARE essential, and a long term low carb diet does more harm than good. 17.01.2022 [ Remaining Vegan during ED recovery ] Many of my clients recovering from disordered eating or eating disorders choose to remain vegetarian or vegan for ethical reasons. My opinions on this have changed somewhat over the years. As an ex-vegan and someone who has fully recovered from disordered eating, I personally found that I needed to drop all restrictions in order to heal, but I understand that this isnt the only path up the recovery mountain. Here are some helpful tips o...n disentangling from the ED voice, and keeping your veganism about compassion, not restriction. https://daretonotdiet.com//maintaining-a-vegan-lifestyle-/

16.01.2022 [ Being wary of hackers ] Caseys personal Facebook profile was hacked by the ISIS flag hackers last week, including the business Instagram page it was attached to. As a result both accounts have been irreversibly deleted by Facebook. Luckily this business page was not directly attached to her account otherwise it would be gone too. This has been happening to a lot of folks lately including business owners, in some cases leading to significant loss of contacts, photos, and in...come. The speed of this hack is increasing. The best way to prevent your account being hacked is to go to your security settings and enable two-factor authentification - using your phone as a necessary checkpoint for password changes means the hackers cant access your account. We dont want this to happen to you too, so if you havent already, please do up your security settings. Stay safe! 16.01.2022 [ Joyful movement ] . I wanted to share some of the other types of movement I enjoy besides yoga (and will soon be offering to all bodies who wish to partake, as a strength & conditioning coach!). But my goofball husband decided to give us a running (and sarcastic FYI) commentary of everything wrong with fitness culture... . He gives a pretty accurate run down of the common messages we get about movement in your average gym:... . it’s not worth doing something unless you’re going hard... ...and/or you’re progressing at every session fat loss = health it’s as SIMPLE as calories in, calories out (ugh) burning, cutting, shredding and slaying are the MO . These messages and wording reveal a violent, punishing approach to the body rather than one of kindness and curiosity. How on earth are we meant to discover and cultivate a joyful movement practice when fat phobic, goal orientated fitness culture is our petri dish? . These crappy messages suck the fun out of moving our bodies and make exercise a means to an end. So how can we inject some fun back into our movement practices? . Try a diverse range of different movement types: juggling, bellydancing, water aerobics, or bocce could be your thing! Don’t think that if you’re not amazing at it right away, it’s not for you (this one’s for the perfectionists out there - myself included!) Honour your body: it’s energy on any given day, previous injuries, age, size, menstruality, and adapt accordingly If you choose something in a gym setting like CrossFit, be aware of diet culture red flags and how you can protect yourself from them... ...and speak up to coaches and gym owners if/when appropriate and if you have the inner resources to do so Don’t let previous bad experience get in your way of forming a joyful relationship with movement. There are more and more inclusive, HAES, fat positive and weight neutral PTs and coaches coming out of the woodworks. Change is happening! . Btw these are kettlebells, and I love the coordination challenge and flow state they induce. See more

14.01.2022 [ Cutting + Bulking: Macro Tracking FTW? ] The fitness industry enforces diet culture in many ways. Cutting and bulking for a competition, for bikini season, or just for the weight loss-hell of it, is one of them. This is a form of dieting focussed on building muscle by eating in a calorie surplus (bulking) followed by caloric restriction for fat loss (cutting). Or for many women, just cutting. You may have heard #fitspo talk about bulking through winter then dieting down as... the weather warms up in time for summer to unveil all the hard work. Macro tracking is usually the diet of choice to elicit the bulk and cut effect. Yes, it IS a diet (despite emancipation-themed claims of "flexible dieting", "lifestyle change", etc.) The majority of physique and weight class professional athletes are on some kind of bulk and cut diet in the lead up to a comp. Many aspiring power lifters will also adopt these diets to ensure they make it into a lower weight category come comp day. But is macro tracking, bulking and cutting effective, sustainable, and most importantly, safe? For my full thought process on this, check out my latest blog at https://www.funkyforest.com.au//cutting-bulking-macros-oh-

13.01.2022 [ Sugar and kids ] . I (Casey) am a holistic dietitian, nutritionist and student naturopath. Often folks assume that I never let my kids eat any foods that aren’t nutrient dense, or contain refined sugars. That our pantry is full of whole foods and jars of fermented things. That there are no chips, ice cream or lollies in sight. . Nothing could be further from the truth.... . My kids get to eat low-nutrient, high-calorie foods on a regular basis. We don’t have ice cream or hot chips EVERY day, but definitely multiple times a week. . And I’m not talking baked sweet potato chips, paleo cakes and nice cream - I mean real custard, hot chips from the fisho, and ice cream with ACTUAL sugar. Real junk food not only healthy versions - although those can be yummy too! . As a result my kids never overeat these foods. They ALWAYS throw half their ice cream away once they’re over it (she handed me the rest a few minutes after this was taken). They don’t beg for lollies. They don’t go crazy at kids birthday parties. . When kids have regular access to so-called junk foods they tend to feel as relaxed and casual about them as they do any other food. They don’t overeat lollies when unsupervised. They don’t become a teenager who sneaks and hides stashes in her room, eating chocolate in private and feeling ashamed. . Research shows that restricting these foods does more harm than good. Restriction of junk food increases children’s enthusiasm around these foods and disturbs their ability to self-regulate their intake as they grow older. . So no, I don’t avoid sugar despite the wellness gurus who provide evidence that it is toxic, causes cancer, or is addictive (all of these claims have been scientifically refuted or remain unproven). . An all foods fit approach lets kids grow up to be relaxed, competent, balanced eaters and allows them to grow into the body that is right for them. . Plus I wanted one too. And you can’t eat ice cream in front of a kid whilst saying they can’t have any! See more

12.01.2022 [ - : , & ] Given the enormous changes happening right now Ive felt a strong desire to offer my services in a way that is of value, flexible and most of all accessible. NUTRITION CONSULTATIONS:... At the time of writing here are the Telehealth (phone or online via Zoom, Skype etc) options I can offer: - 30 minute consults for people with EPC or EDMP, AND who are under 16 yo, have a Health Care Card, or are classified COVID vulnerable. Note that given the short time allotment a regular 60 minute consult will need to be spread out over two sessions, ideally on two consecutive days available for everyone else with EPC or EDMP. A gap is payable as per usual offered for ALL clients experiencing financial strain, regardless of whether you have an EPC/EDMP or not. This means the gap you are required to pay can be reduced Usual private health fund rebates for those who use this. A mutually agreed upon fee for folks using the sliding scale option can be discussed with me privately. YOGA From mid-July 2020, in line with QLD COVID-19 restrictions further easing, Saturday classes are now offered at the EcoCentre for $10pp, details in EVENTS tab. I am also offering online and in-person PRIVATE sessions, which offers what a pre-recorded class (and to a lesser extent, a live class) cannot: one-on-one, personalised care and attunement. Heres how it works: are 30 to 60 minutes and include a check-in, instruction, and homework . No having to turn up to class at the usual time when circumstances at home have changed so drastically (eg. kids no longer in school, partners working from home) . The student decides how much a 30 (or 60) minute meeting is worth vs. what they can afford. It might be $10, it might be $80. These offerings will likely shift as the situation morphs but right now this feels right for me. My wish is to be of service to folks doing it tough and at the same time continue to support those who have the financial capacity to pay the full price. If you have the capacity to pay full fee please do so, knowing you will be supporting my family AND enabling me to support those who cannot afford the full fee. If you wish to discuss or book any of these services with me, please contact me personally at [email protected] Stay safe

09.01.2022 [ MLM Essential Oils: When Herbal Medicine Goes Full Capitalist ] Episode 15 of Non-Diet Yogi podcast is out, and its FIRE. With clarity and grace, Katya illuminates the many ways capitalism is damaging people, plants and the wellness industry at large... and how we can do better. Bonus: fun banter about astrology towards the end! Listen wherever you find podcasts or at https://www.funkyforest.com.au//ep-15-wellness-capitalism-

06.01.2022 [ Yoga for your WATER element ] In the wake of the Winter Solstice, this Saturday well be diving deep into this abounding darkness, the ultimate yin, as we travel into the world of the WATER element. Where: The EcoCentre, Crystal Waters, Sunshine Coast Hinterland Cost: $10 pp; 6- and 10-class passes available The organs related to water are the kidneys and urinary bladder. 03.01.2022 [ - : , & ] Given the enormous changes happening right now I’ve felt a strong desire to offer my services in a way that is of value, flexible and most of all accessible. Here’s how it works: are 30 to 60 minutes and include a check-in, instruction, and homework . No having to turn up to class at the usual time when circumstances at home have changed so drastically (eg. kids no longer in school, partners working from home) .
