25.01.2022 What a way to end the term and year! Austswim came to my swim school today to present me with the 2020 QLD AUSTSWIM award of excellent - AUSTSWIM Teacher of Infant and Preschool Aquatics. Incredibly grateful to Sandra Hegarty and Claire Klich for nominating me and so ridiculously thankful to be doing a job I love! It’s an amazing feeling to know I’m giving these children a skill for life. #thankfulgratefulblessed

25.01.2022 Splurged yesterday and bought this robotic vacuum! Its a Viron QT1000 and I now need name suggestions the last vacuum was named Gary (thanks to one of the Funshine dads for that corker) Im thinking Cutie 1000 or Marshall (reminds me of a Dalmatian and we alll know Marshall!) What do you suggest?!

25.01.2022 Absolutely Cheerin!! Massive thank you to the two wonderful ladies who nominated me - I’m buzzing! What a way to end the year #winner #qlder #austswim #askillforlife

20.01.2022 This is the main reason I say that siblings are guilty by association too as the germs travel so quickly and easily through a family

20.01.2022 Last year we trialled going through winter for the first time and my biggest success with doing this, was Finn! Term 3 2019 saw 3yo Finn receive the Funshine Courage Award. Finn had been swimming with me for about a year and a half and we had yet to crack the code for him and his fear. But we did not stop trying! And Finns parents were great at making sure there was time for extra practise between lessons. We slowly chipped away at Finns fears - increasing the length of tim...e he had his face in the water...then once comfortable with his face in the water, we increased the length of time he held on with just one hand (so the other hand could paddle). After a while he began to get comfortable letting go with both hands and just floating in front of me! It wasnt long from there before he was paddling with both hands for a very short distance so we started increasing the length of free swimming time he was able to do. Well you wouldnt believe it but on the last class of term we were rewarded for our patience and hard work and Finn swam a width of the pool by himself! Flash forward two terms and this kid now asks when is it my turn? and can I go now? Hes learning freestyle and can jump in roll over and float on his back WITHOUT HELP! What an absolute LEGEND! Congratulations Finn!! * * * The Courage Award will be given out each term to any student who has conquered their fears during that term, as a way of continuing on the legacy of Colleen, a childhood friend of Denises (Zenas mum) who sadly drowned when caught in a rip with Denise in 1965. Thank you for sponsoring this award Denise Little!

18.01.2022 Not too many of you know what got my learn to swim journey started as a child...it’s not a standard story, it starts on this day, 55 years ago. Two families went for a day at Noosa’s North Shore, three young girls were swimming in the water. one 8 years old and two 12 years old. One of the 12yo and the 8yo got caught in a rip - the 12 yo lost her life that day, and the 8yo was my mum. My mother made sure that my sister and I learnt how to swim proficiently, she would take m...e to lessons even though I’d sit on the edge crying most of the time. When I got older (primary school age) id still fill my goggles with tears before a race. As the years went on Claire and I became fast racers! Mum would take us to training morning and night up to 5 days a week then sit at carnivals all weekend long watching us compete. In my late teens I knew my skills could be shared with others and so mum paid for me to become an Austswim teacher. I took up a couple of casual roles over the years and then when I became a mother myself it became obvious that this was where my life had lead me. I’ve just celebrated 4 years in business and this term am teaching 118 students a week. Something I absolutely attribute to my mother and Colleens legacy

17.01.2022 A fun reshare of an old prank - show your little ones and get them gooood!! Thank goodness swimming is already postponed - we wouldnt be able to swim today - the pool is PINK! #aprilfools

16.01.2022 Can I get a big big BIG round of applause for this superstar of a swimmer. This is 4.5yo Cheyenne - she’s been swimming with me since she was 6 months old and she’s recently been learning bilateral breathing. How many 4yo do you know who can do this?! So incredibly proud of her

16.01.2022 From 3yo we ask our students four safety questions related to the pool and surrounding areas. One of the questions is what is the phone number to call in an emergency? (police, ambulance or firies) Well, tonight, after his swimming lesson where I asked this question - one little 3yo boy decided he wanted to talk to a policeman and so called 000 note to self - also talk to children about when its appropriate to call 000 Thanks for the laugh Blake

16.01.2022 Term 1 starts up today

10.01.2022 Term 4 saw the courage award be given out to not one, but FOUR Funshine kids. It was a huge 14 week term which gave everyone plenty of time to practise and overcome difficulties. The first of the four Term Four recipients was 3.5yo Leo. Leo and his dad started lessons with me last year but it was a rocky start. Leo had had issues with his ears and the little guy was also very scared of the water. Due to his mum having the families second baby Leos lessons were paused for a ...little while. When he came back he was in toddler classes (without a guardian). He was still very hesitant to try anything new, in particular anything that might get water in his nose. Now our Leo is a very bright and chatty boy and would often explain why he wouldnt attempt things I was asking of him, but through a lot of encouragement from myself and his family we started to break through his fears. Did you know that when Leo wears goggles, he looks just like Rusty Rivets! Leos gone from clinging onto me and not liking anything much at all about the pool to eagerly awaiting his lesson day each week. He now can put his whole head under the water and even enjoys picking up rockets from the ledge (though we are yet to crack the eyes open skill ). He happily splashes his lesson buddy in games and though some things still make home nervous he trusts in me enough to give things a try. How courageous is that! Im am incredibly keen to see what this term brings for him - Congratulations Leo! * * * The Courage Award will be given out each term to any student who has conquered their fears during that term, as a way of continuing on the legacy of Colleen, a childhood friend of Denises (Zenas mum) who sadly drowned when caught in a rip with Denise in 1965. Thank you for sponsoring this award Denise Little

05.01.2022 Some good news!

05.01.2022 Yesterday a parent mentioned that theyd had some safety concerns at their home pool with their 4yo son - potentially dangerous behaviour regarding how they were playing in the water. They had a big conversation with the kindergartener about safety and when she mentioned it to me I quickly changed my lesson plan to continue this learning. So, Instead of practicing freestyle we spoke about and practiced rescues (from out of the pool). We discussed why you shouldnt enter the w...ater to save someone and that you MUST yell out to an adult to let them know whats happened/happening. We spoke about 000 and brainstormed what things around the pool could be used for rescues. Then we practiced how to flip over and float and learnt that you can do this if you accidentally fall in OR if you needed to rest and catch your breath. This is why it is so important for parental input in your childs learning. Whether its safety like this or letting me know that your child is interested in police and bad guys atm so I can add this in to our lesson. There are so many possibilities for learning in and around the water. I was grateful for the parental input yesterday-we can practice side breathing next week.

04.01.2022 Couldnt be more proud of my swim school and our Funshine Family community - earlier this week I enrolled my 99th and 100th student! This is thanks to you all and your recommendations to your friends and family . (Since then I have also enrolled 101-104 ) What a fantastic accomplishment 3 and a bit years into business

04.01.2022 Would you like to see some out of the box methods included in my teaching/lessons? I love the idea of including other lessons within the swimming lesson!

02.01.2022 Yep but please dont come if showing signs of illness (as per normal) because it would only take a child spluttering or coughing/sneezing into my face (which happens multiple times on the daily) for me to become infected.

02.01.2022 Todays the day!! Term 4 starts up today See you in the pool
