In doing so I got to meet one heck of a lady, and heard all about the reason these drawers were in her care. This purple-clad lovely lady was the sister of the boy who had these bought for him when he was born. She was clearing out his property and explained he was gifted these drawers 70 years ago as a newborn... he kept them in his bedroom until he was moved into care earlier this year. Her other brother had a matching set. 02.01.2022 SOLD Midcentury English display cabinet Turnidge of London Turnidge of London was a niche British maker during the 60s and 1970s. ... But unlike other British manufacturers of Midcentury furniture, Turnidge never made the more user-friendly dining room or bedroom furniture. Rather, this family-run business carved a niche making bars, display cabinets and bookcases. As so often is the case, the earlier the piece the better the detail quality. This 1960s piece will be better made than the equivalent one from those made in the later 1970s. A catalogue dated 1970 quoted Turnidge of London Ltd to have by that point been established for over fifty years. A family business, Turnidge valued, retained and improved the traditional skills and crafts that ensured furniture provided new owners of it as much pride and pleasure as it has given us to produce . Like so many British and Australian manufacturers of this era, Turnidge struggled to survive far into the 1980s. During this period of globalisation, furniture manufacturers in Australia and the UK were taken over or closed, mass production methods and international imports having negative impacts on smaller, more local business models. Very few smaller manufacturers survived, but those who did such as (UK) Ercol, Nathan and a revived Morris of Glasgow carried on in a new and very different market. Lesson over.
