25.01.2022 I am back in Tamworth this Sunday and have one spot for 1/2 horses still available. If you are interested just comment below or message me to book in or find out more. I will back next on the 10th October.
24.01.2022 So I can finally share some very exciting news- I am now the very proud and excited owner of my very own Barbie pony! I have been on the lookout for the perfect horse for months and months and I cant believe I have actually found her. She is only young so we wont be doing too much yet but stay tuned for plenty of updates, because well- pretty pony pictures!
23.01.2022 When you have to exercise the pony but also have to nap... Bella also showing how much she enjoys said exercise on a Sunday
23.01.2022 Feeling the feels. Love treating this little lady- she is so expressive about what she does and doesnt like...
23.01.2022 Throwback to one of the best wins by my favourite horse ever- Big Money. Not only was this guy my soul horse and favourite ride, but he was my poster boy for the benefits of bodywork for horses in training. He battled navicular disease his whole life and it was always a fine balance between training, shoeing and bodywork to keep him sound. Once he got out on the track though, he was as tough as they come, and if he had half a chance of winning he would never give up.
23.01.2022 So excited my new work jacket is finished! Stepping it up a bit with some serious bling!
22.01.2022 It finally happened- I got to work Mona in hand for the first time! This was her first time with the cavesson on so it was just a bit of exploration rather than real work. She is quite a sensitive, anxious soul and we have spent the first month or so just working on connection and getting her wanting to engage with me. I am happy to take the time it takes to build a relationship before I worry too much about proper work. I will probably spend the next few months working with her in hand to build strength and responsiveness before I think about riding. She is only just 4 so is still only a baby really so plenty of time for that once we have this stuff nailed. Also I think of her as quite delicate for the breed but looking at this photo she definitely has a bit of bone about her head!
20.01.2022 A bit of a Friday funny- that I think is kind of hilarious. I also feel like the people that make memes must actually be enjoying the whole lockdown thing...
20.01.2022 And so it begins... First of the mares arrived today ready for the start of the season in a few weeks.
19.01.2022 This is the beautiful Dex- having a massive process after working on his Point of Balance. Check out the eyes and lips! Dex is one of my absolute favourite clients as he really dives into every treatment with his whole mind, body and soul- even if he doesnt really want to.
19.01.2022 Another successful Anke Hawke clinic done and dusted. Anke has a great eye for what is happening with the biomechanics of the horse and rider combination and how changing the tiniest thing can make a huge difference to the movement. We had our regular group plus some new students keen to learn about classical dressage. They are all now on the path to a softer, more harmonious partnership where the horse can feel safe in the knowledge they will be heard and honoured at whateve...r level they arrive at (and the same goes for the students). The beauty of classical dressage is it doesn’t matter if you have a horse straight off the track, a chunky pony or a big warmblood, it is about teaching the horse to move the best way that they can within their own limitations. Everyone started with some in hand work- a great way to start rehab as it means both you and the horse have time to focus on all the minute details without being overwhelmed. Also a great way to realise walking backwards is harder work than it looks. Ridden lessons were working on lightness in the seat and softness in the horse- looking for reaching up and out and getting that swing through the back and ribs. I also had my first go with the garrocha pole- very fun but also surprisingly heavy! The next clinic will be in June so keep an eye out if you would like to come and fence sit and learn what classical dressage is all about.
17.01.2022 Its not always just a physical release... Bella has been a bit stiff and lethargic lately with the cold weather so I gave her a TBT skeletal balance the other day. Took her out to work yesterday and she was bouncing off the lead! She was like a little 2yr old and was so fresh and willing to work- it was like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders and mentally she was able to focus and engage properly. All from just one treatment aimed at skeletal alignment. If you have a horse that needs a mental as well as physical reset drop me a message and we can book them in.
16.01.2022 What committed owners with a dedicated team can achieve... This lovey guy is an enormous young TB (not kidding he is around 18hh) and as such he has really struggled with keeping himself healthy and balanced as he grows. His owners have gone above and beyond and use coaches, a bodyworker, a feed consultant and also a consultant for gut balancers and supplements to make sure he stays as health and happy as possible. He has been one of my tougher cas...es but he appears to have stopped growing for the moment and we are starting to see some really nice changes in his body. He is much more hydrated in his fascia overall and his coat has a wonderful glow. From the markers on the photos you can see how his pelvis has relaxed and the psoas has softened. This has allowed his hamstrings to relax and also the lumbar, hip, stifle, hock connections have all released tension. There is a lot more movement in the ribs and the whole shoulder is starting to soften and release. This will make him much easier to ride in his dressage training. It will also make it easier to recognise if he is unable to perform a movement because of restriction or because he just doesnt understand the question yet. See more
16.01.2022 All set for day 2 of my TBT (Tucker Biokinetic Technique) Functional Alingment course. It’s been 2 years since I did my last course as Dr Tucker is American so she hasn’t been able to get over but now we have the the beauty of zoom meetings. I am so excited to be learning about treating the organs, the tendons and ligaments and emotional problems. Also really excited to be learning about how to help with gelding scars and ovary issues. Stay tuned!!
14.01.2022 Its been a big few days treating horses in the freezing cold so today I decided to sit in the car with the heating on and listen to podcasts while harrowing paddocks. Such satisfying before and after shots.
13.01.2022 To celebrate the horses birthday and all my amazing clients I have decided to do a special deal for the whole month of August. If you refer a friend and they mention you when booking they will receive $10 off their initial treatment and you will receive $10 of your next treatment as well. Win win! You can refer as many people as you like and you can get $10 off per horse per treatment (perfect for when you need to justify getting the whole herd done). If you are a new ...client with no referral dont panic- you get to join the fun too. All you need to do is get a friend to book as well and if you both mention each other then you both get $10 off. Again win win! Please share or tag your friends so everyone can join in the fun. . . . . . See more
11.01.2022 When you are basically flatlining after a treatment
11.01.2022 The two faces of Friday. Which one are you heading into the weekend? These two boys have just had the same treatment but they reacted in quite different ways. Its amazing how results are so individual depending on what is going on in the body.
10.01.2022 Spring is in the air here today- the first day of spring and the offical start of the breeding season. Also warm enough to finally ditch the rugs on the maiden mares- which we are all happy about!
10.01.2022 Some go fast stripes for this little racehorse today. He has a suspected pulled hamstring muscle and also has a bit of back spasm meaning he cant work. He had a bit of bodywork and then got a de-toning tape application to help relax the sore muscles (yellow) and a toning tape over the TFL (red) for support as this is an antagonist muscle to the hamstrings. I will leave this on for a few days and then as he improves I will swap to a supporting, toning tape for the hamstrings as he comes back in to work.
09.01.2022 Oh my goodness it has been a crazy few weeks! I treated 32 horses this week, ranging from 2 weeks old to 31yrs old, and I am only ‘supposed’ to be part time. Also somehow I didn’t manage to take a photo of a single one so had to get one of Mona while I gave her a treatment this afternoon. Honestly my insta game is so rubbish . I will be away all of next week having a little break at home in QLD now the borders are finally open. When I come back yearling season will be in full swing so if you want to get your horse booked in before Christmas let me know as I won’t have many spots left this year.
09.01.2022 So Bandit has had a bit of an issue with his feet now we are getting rain again. I saw a post by D.R. EQUINE about their hoof healer and so I sent Deb a message. I have to say she could not have been more helpful and spent ages replying to all my questions. If you are wondering if it is suitable for your horse definitely send her a message or check out her page for info. I will take some progress shots over the next few weeks and see how we go.
09.01.2022 Bella stepped up to the big leagues today and went to her first @bolsenbroekbelinda clinic. This is a little video of her first baby steps of half pass. Meanwhile I have apparently forgotten how to walk backwards
08.01.2022 I still have two spots left for Tamworth this Saturday so let me know if you would like to book your horse in for bodywork treatment. Also please share with any of your friends that might be interested as I am hoping to make this a regular monthly visit.
08.01.2022 My clients know I am always banging on about crookedness stemming from asymmetry in the TMJ. This post has some good visuals as to how and why this happens.
07.01.2022 It was dentist day the other day- and the midgets first time in hard drugs . I had been noticing that Bandit was a bit stiff to the rhs when lunging and I had a feeling it was because of his teeth as they were a bit overdue. Got them check and it turned out they were a bit sharp on the right side and this had also caused some ulceration along his cheek. He had a bit of bodywork afterwards, a few days for the ulcers to clear up and now he is much softer when working. Whene...ver I see a horse for the first time I always check for teeth pain and also check when the horse last saw the dentist. There is not much point me treating a horse that is holding its jaw crookedly or is in pain from sharp teeth. The state of the jaw has a direct effect on the rest of the body and you will find that a treatment wont hold for long if there is no chance of them being able to relax and dealing properly. Big thanks to Dr Eds Equine Vets for coming out to do everyones teeth.
07.01.2022 This season is all about matching accessories apparently. How cute is this mini me
07.01.2022 The perfect winters morning (I say this because I can go back inside to defrost in front of the fire once feed up is finished)
06.01.2022 Sundays done right... (And the extent of my social media engagement at the moment )
06.01.2022 I love this photo! This was right after I finished a treatment on this little mare yesterday. She had started out quite anxious and reactive but as we went along she relaxed more and more and her whole body started to open up. When we finished she just wanted to have a moment to cuddle and let the energy flow through my hand and right along her body. It was pretty special.
06.01.2022 This is a simple eye comparison of an anxious, hyper vigilant horse before and after a treatment. The worried, tense eye is replaced with a soft, relaxed one after only 30 minutes of work. Bodywork is a slightly misleading term I think, as it works on a much deeper level than just muscle/fascial relaxation. It also helps to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and settle the soul. This allows the horse to relax and reset, often for the first time in a long time.
06.01.2022 Macca just having a little snooze in the sun post treatment. When I started she was being very chestnut mare about me touching her but it didnt take her long to change her mind and we were definitely friends by the end
06.01.2022 Mona was not impressed that I tried to work her with an oncoming storm barreling down on us. The rain is great but who else is getting frustrated with not being able to work their horses in this crazy weather?
06.01.2022 ? Getting your eye in and noticing subtle changes can take some practice but is invaluable in helping you recognise if your horse is looking and feeling better or worse than normal. Take a look at the two pictures of this dressage mare I treated the other day and tell me what you see. The top picture is before and the bottom one is after. This was her first treatment so the changes are quite subtle but I was really happy with how she responded. Let me know what stands out to you and I will comment as well with what I see in a day or so.
06.01.2022 Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. It can be hard and awkward to really check in with your mates on a genuine level so here are some tips from @ruokday to help you get started: 1.Are you in a good head space yourself- are you genuinely ready and willing to listen? 2. Are you prepared- for the answer to be no Im not ok or that someone may not be ready to talk?... 3. Do you understand your role is not to fix peoples problems? 4. Have you picked your moment- somewhere private at a time when you will have enough time to chat properly? If you are worried someone may be suicidal you can contact lifeline for crisis support on 13 11 14 See more
05.01.2022 The importance of an engaged seat- and a strong core! This is a great diagram from Happy Horse Training that shows what happens in both the forward reaching and pushing stage of a stride. When the hind leg reaches forward the pelvis will tuck, the back engages and the head drops. When the leg pushes back the pelvis tilts forward and the back naturally wants to drop which will also tend to encourage the head to lift. If the rider has a weak core and does not engage when... the horse is in the push back stage they too will end up hollowing the back and falling into the saddle. This means that when the hind leg comes forward they are not prepared and will block the lifting of the back. This will cause the horse to work by just pushing out behind. If the rider tucks the pelvis and works on engaging the core they can resist untucking the seat when the horse pushes back. This allows the horses own pelvis to stay engaged so they are more collected when bringing the hind leg through. As the horse lifts his back the rider can also follow this movement and allow their own pubic bone to lift. This will give the horse the freedom to stretch and soften the neck into the contact without overbalancing. See more
05.01.2022 Just home from what I can only describe as a very tough day of treating horses in Tamworth. You know its cold when there is ice settling on the horses back while you treat them! Too cold to even get a photo until I was home and defrosted. I will be back to Tamworth in about a month (when its hopefully a lot warmer) so comment below or send me a message if you want more info or to be added to the list.
05.01.2022 Its cold and its raining and I am clearly getting soft so I am very glad my day got rained out and I could come home and bake biscuits instead
04.01.2022 I love all the horses I treat but rehab is where my heart is. Having a good plan and a good team is so important and I am loving being a small part of the Gundy Park Rehab team.
01.01.2022 You know you are getting old when you are treating a racehorse and you suddenly realise you used to ride their mum when she was a racehorse.
01.01.2022 I had an early start today vetting mares but I also had one beautiful, child free hour with the horses as the sun came up. The perfect start to the weekend. Now I am off to Morpeth to treat horses for the day- the other best way to spend the weekend...
01.01.2022 # Ovarian dysfunction- or twisted ovaries in mares. This is an area that is really gaining traction with bodyworkers and osteopaths at the moment and can be that final piece of the puzzle regarding difficult behaviour in your mare when nothing else seems to be fixing it. Please be aware that in Australia the only person legally allowed to do an internal exam on your horse is a vet or an osteopathic vet. Many bodyworkers and osteopaths are now working wi...th vets to help them investigate and treat this issue. Anyone who has had anything to do with scanning broodmares will know that there are always a few mares with one really hard to reach ovary. Often they can be very sensitive to palpation and have difficulty cycling. They can also get very marey when they do cycle. In ridden mares they often suddenly change behaviour while in oestrus and can can show discomfort under saddle or have back pain, refuse to take canter leads, constantly swish their tail or be hard to catch to name a few. A very simplified version of what is happening is that the mesovarium (part of the broad ligament of the uterus) has wrapped around the ovary and pulled it forward and up. The pain is caused by the pressure of the mesovarium and overstimulation of the free nerve endings in the area. There will be reduced mobility of the whole of the broad ligament and this will also affect the lumbar spine, often causing immobility in the first 3 lumbar vertebrae as well as the sacrum and atlas. If one part has stiffened up then the areas around it will also stiffen up. Think of any time you have had period pain and then got lower back pain that has had you walking like a crooked fence post. It is important to note that there can be many other causes for pain in this area such as bladder issues, ovarian cysts and tumors, impaction colic and chronic back pain. It is important to always get a vet or osteopathic vet experienced in ovarian manipulation to check your horse so you can be sure you are not missing other serious issues. See more
01.01.2022 Nothing like another cracking sunset to get me back on track after 2 weeks of radio silence
