23.01.2022 My seven year old may not be a super curious eater, but he is definitely creative in the kitchen, and last nights sorbet creation is testament to that. ....... This is a GREAT way to get fussy eaters to try new fruits. ....... 3 x frozen bananas... 1 x cucumber 2- 3 x frozen cubes lemon juice . Pop it all in a blender with a bit of milk, and wiz it up till it’s smooth. ....... If you have a variety of frozen fruit in your freezer, you can let your child get creative. ....... Frozen fruit sorbet all round (with some in this case) It was surprisingly delicious! . . . #sorbetcreations #sorbet #blender #kitchencreations #kidsinthekitchen #proudmama #funfood #fussytofree #creativefood #creativefoodsforkids #kidsnutritionist See more

22.01.2022 I just stumbled across this fab book by @bodyimagemovement Taryn Brumfitt. It even has a catchy song you can sing along with (check it out on YouTube). . 20.01.2022 #dinnertime These are all senses that we use to develop an understanding of food. Notice there’s no tongue? ....... We use all of these senses before we even get to tasting!... So it’s integral that all of these experiences are pleasant, not forced, and certainly approached with curiosity. ....... To a sensory sensitive child, smells or the sight of foods might be just too much. To another child, textures and wet foods can be confronting. ....... If foods get to your child’s teeth or lips, this is a HUGE step, but don’t force them to go further. Touching food to teeth or lips is a good opportunity to discover sensory characteristics of foods. ....... In all situations, we can encourage curiosity and enjoyment by simply having the food in our space without having pressure to eat it, then we’re using some of these senses without realising it! ....... For some children, if foods get to their lips, and they like the taste, they will happily dig in, so it’s tempting to ‘make’ them try it. . Try not to force the matter here though. Use your own food to follow the sensory process and talk your child through that. It’s actually quite a fun table time experience! . . . #happyeating #sensoryfoods #fussyeaters #foodprocess #funfood #curiouseaters #learnaboutfood #feedingtherapy #fussytofree #bodytruthnutrition See more

19.01.2022 Our first of many eggs brought to you by our gorgeous chickens. . I’ve been completely stunned by my middles sons sudden turn around in ‘liking’ eggs once he has collected them from our new hens. . As in all areas of eating, there is no pressure for my children to eat things they don’t like. I call it the take it or leave it approach. So when he collected eggs a few days ago and asked for scrambled eggs, I had to nonchalantly say ‘yeah, sure buddy’ and hide my excitement.... . I know we can’t all invest in chooks to get our kids to embrace foods, but I am saying to bare with your children. Be the one to offer, but don’t get offended if they refuse. You never know, one day they might actually ask for scrambled eggs, AND enjoy them! . . . #foodfun #feedingskills #foodcompetence #newthings #simplefood #foodexperience #bodytruthnutrition #eggs #homegrowneggs #chooks See more

17.01.2022 Is this what mealtimes have come to in your home? Feeding families hasn’t always been this difficult! With advances in nutrition science, advances in pressure have reared also. ....... Even in situations where children have sensory sensitivities, or other things that impact eating, we can still help our children to learn to eat with joy IF we stop trying to GET them eat. .......... The great news is, it’s actually less work. Yep. Less. ....... If we stick to the #divisionofresponsibility if we take the #pressuretoeat off our kids, and instead instill in them a sense of joy and #curiosity around food, your child can thrive. No yelling, no tears, no ruined mealtimes. ....... It is possible to restore family mealtimes to become enjoyable! . . . #ellynsatter #feedingroles #competenteaters #bodytruthnutrition #familymeals #lessstress #enjoyfood See more

16.01.2022 A great foodie activity to expose your child to celery... and it’s Fun!!!

14.01.2022 Nutrition and feeding sessions are all complete for this crazy, but wonderful year! . It’s been such an honour working with all the families and individuals throughout 2020, and considering the year that’s been, I’m incredibly thankful! . I’ve been a bit quiet on here lately, just focusing on my clients and working on streamlining, but I’m taking some time away from the clinic and feeding sessions, as well as all the social media.... . I’m excited about some new ‘stuff’ that’s in the pipeline for 2021, including a new look to my media pages, so stay tuned. . For now, I’m going offline to enjoy my family and spend some unscreened time with my beautiful boys. . I’ll be back on here early in the new year, but until then, have a wonderful Christmas, a blessed new year, and hopefully, some time with loved ones. . May you reflect on the gold of 2020 (there should be something) and may 2021 bring hope for some better things to come. . Merry Christmas friends. . . . #timeforabreak #whatayear #feedingtherapy #nutrition #nutritionforkids #fearfullyandwonderfullymade #learningthroughplay See more

13.01.2022 Who else was taught that they had to eat everything on their plate before they were allowed dessert? . Who was forced to sit at the table until they’d eaten their grey overcooked peas? . Who was told that their food would be sent to children who appreciated it if they didn’t eat everything given to them?!?... . Hunger and fullness cues are a crucial lesson to learn in childhood for our bodies to sit at a healthy weight, and to avoid a negative relationship with food (among other things!!). . Make a conscious effort to support your child learn when they are hungry and full by offering regular meals without constantly feeding your child (ie, allowing hunger), and not forcing them to eat if they say they have had enough. Teaching children how to become a competent eater will set them up for a well balanced life! . At mealtime at our house, we say ‘is your tummy happy?’ . . . #fussyeaters #learning #foodlessons #competenteaters See more

12.01.2022 Feeding a fussy eater can feel overly complicated. Take a step back and simplify things. Serve smaller portions of foods (they can always come back for more) Let them serve themselves! Don’t over serve a plate. This can be overwhelming for a child. A small portion of each food. Space on a plate is ok. Keep your food talk simple. Yummy, crunchy, soft, hot, cold.... No need to discuss the healthy or not healthy attributes. AND this is the BIGGIE! Relax. Or make yourself look relaxed. Don’t fuss. Keep calm. Eventually it will come naturally to not stress around your child’s intake at meal time. . . . #happymeals #happykids #keepitsimple #nostress #fussyeaters #fussyeatersolutions See more

12.01.2022 A slightly different version of play dough that has just a touch more stretch and give. Rubber Goop!!! ....... So incredibly soft!!! And it’s gluten free so if you have a child with a severe allergy, this could be your go to. ....... Never underestimate the power of sensory play for #fussyeaters it can be a game changer.... . 12.01.2022 Guess what’s cooking this week??? . One of my favourite Christmas baked items, which can be used to make the humble bread man or . . 11.01.2022 Hey . I’ve been offline since before Christmas, and it’s been truly great to step back, be present with my kids, and not have any social media influence. . I’ll be taking another few weeks off the ‘media’ to tend to some crucial family matters, so bare with me if you have tried to contact me, I will get back to you when I can!... . Just to leave you with a new year reflection; If the year that’s been has taught me one thing, it’s that my family will always come first. Always. I’m outrageously blessed to be a #mumofboys , to have incredible #bigbrothers of my own, to have some great #sisters by marriage, and to have nieces and nephews I adore. I have loving parents, and extended family near, and (unfortunately at the moment), far. But never far from my heart. I also have a huge bunch of amazing #friends , who make up my God family. I would drop everything for these people. . So, I am THANKFUL. So so thankful. More now than ever. . Whatever your ‘family’ looks like, whoever they are; love them fiercely, ceaselessly and unconditionally. And prioritise accordingly. . You get to make the choice, but choose wisely. Family is precious. . From a fiercely loving mum of three boys who is thankful for #family . #sharingthankfulness #gratitude #2021 See more

11.01.2022 A great all rounder article covering the meaning of the sDOR and why its worth using this feeding method for every child, especially fussy eaters!

10.01.2022 Such a great book by Taryn Brumfit to encourage your kids to embrace their bodies just the way they are, and a poppy little song to go with it. Fussy eaters or not, everyone needs to learn to embrace the body they’re living in!

10.01.2022 Grapefruit volcano . This little lad had never tasted grapefruit, so we cut out the fruit from inside, and turned our fruit skin into a volcano (bicarbonate and vinegar). . The joy was palpable, and the lil lad tried a little grapefruit after the event (because fun volcano explosions).... . 09.01.2022 Food labelling can be pretty hazardous. We don’t realise we’re doing it, because it’s been ingrained in our generation. Healthy/not healthy, good/bad, junk/not junk. ....... So why shouldn’t we label foods, and what should we say instead? ....... Children are black and white thinkers. If food is bad, they will come to believe they are bad for wanting it, which, like you and me, if we shouldn’t have something, we automatically want it more.... We talk about making food morally equal. Lollies are food. Broccoli is food. They both provide energy. One type of food has other things that help our bodies work well. The other doesn’t. But both foods are neither good nor bad. They’re food. ....... When I’m talking to children about food, I talk about the look, taste and feel. If a child says a Lolly was nice, I ask what it is that they liked. Equally if a child says broccoli was nice, I ask what it was they liked. On the opposite, if they don’t like something, we talk about what it looks/smells like, and incite curiosity rather than say but it’s really healthy because to a child, that’s an abstract concept outside their level of understanding. ....... Does this mean children should have full time access to the lolly jar? No. As parents, it’s our responsibility to provide a variety of foods for our children, and it’s up to them if they eat it. However, when Lollys are available, be careful not to call them junk, but rather just another type of food! . . . #foodfreedom #foodlabeling #nomoreconfusion #foodeducation #foodeducationforkids #fussyeaters #divisionofresponsibility #parentschoose #childrensnutrition See more

08.01.2022 While school holidays give us a break in the lunchbox action, I’d like to encourage parents of fussy eaters that lunchboxes need to contain foods your child will eat, not food that looks like it’s coming off the front page of a woolies magazine, or a ‘clean eating’ insta post. ....... I am all for packing my children’s lunchbox so they contain a fruit, vegetable, protein, and carb, but this IS A GUIDELINE, and doesn’t have to mean we as parents have to stress over it being a... perfect example of ‘healthy’ eating. ....... Whilst I understand the premise behind government health guidelines in school environments, targeting and shaming children’s lunchboxes isn’t helpful, especially for those fussy eaters and those with a limited food intake. ....... Take heart, dear parent, that lunchboxes don’t need to be a tray of guilt and shame. And if they are? I’d really like to know about it so we can change the food environment! Please DM me if you fit into this category. ....... Out of any advice, the best I would give you, is; change up the contents of lunchboxes so they aren’t the same every day. For those children with ASD who may like predictability, this could mean having a few different lunchbox options and rotating them. Variety in lunchboxes is helpful so children can pick and choose. it’s ok if food comes back home, don’t feel like you can’t send this food again. don’t be afraid to have a conversation with your child’s school about unrealistic expectations. if you’re child is refusing food of any kind in their lunchbox, please get in contact! . . . #fussyeaters #lunchboxsolutions #noperfectlunchbox #pickyeaters #lunchboxideas #supportingfussyeaters #parenting #nofoodshame #complexparenting #fussytofree #simplify #simplifyparenting #bodytruthnutrition See more

07.01.2022 Happy Sunday friends! . With the weekend coming to a close, I’m reminded that birthday parties are in the planning stages after slowly coming out of our COVID hibernation, and this is a question I get asked quite often. ....... The answer?... Nope, we shouldn’t control or limit our children at birthday parties unless their is a specific medical reason. ....... The childhood years are a crucial time for children to learn how to regulate their food intake, and birthday parties are a good opportunity to allow them some autonomy. That said, if you restrict your child’s intake of cakes, sweets, chocolate and other party foods, and they never have access to these at home, but still have a taste for them, you will find that they MAY find it difficult to contain themselves when party food is on the table. This may mean a few uncomfortable experiences (upset tummy’s?), but at the end of the day, like anything in life, learning to eat is just that, learning! ....... So stand back and let your child choose, and by all means, if you think it’s getting out of hand, taking them aside for a gentle reminder to eat until their tummy is happy, and sip on some water, is always a good option See more

06.01.2022 The choppy waters of parenthood, the constancy, the tired, the stressed, the battles. . But then there are the victories, from the minute to the huge. 04.01.2022 With all the craziness and changes in routines (and life) combined with being at home more, a #visualstoryboard can be quite helpful in supporting your child with routine expectations through the day. ........ 04.01.2022 Frozen fruit icecream... frozen banana with added avocado and all the melons my children won’t normally eat. But it had sprinkles. So it was a win! ....... Sprinkles are little balls of coloured sugar. Sure, they’re not full of nourishment, and the kids will need some water and a good teeth brushing before bed, but they ARE a sensory experience, they DO encourage trying new foods because they ARE FUN! And remember that for children, life is about fun and play, and food co...mpetence is learned through play as well. ....... 04.01.2022 Food association and imaginary play. . What creative food names do you use in your household? ....... The humble broccoli has been indicated as a despised food for children, but when converted into a dinosaur tree... well the game changes.... ....... We call broccoli both tree and by it’s real name. We mustn’t try and deviate from reality, but injecting creativity into mealtimes is a must with young children, and we sometimes roar and act out the part of a dinosaur eating so that we can role play chewing with our teeth ....... 02.01.2022 #mealtimemeltdowns . How can these be avoided or turned around? . Well it’s not just the children that have the meltdowns, it can be the parents too.... Am I right? . It’s justifiable to get frustrated when your child refuses food. It’s distressing! It’s upsetting! And it can make us parents feel pretty helpless. . I’ll tell you a secret? . To begin the turn around, mealtimes need to become enjoyable instead of stressful. . This might mean your child doesn’t eat much at that mealtime for a short while, as you focus on stepping away from trying to ‘get’ your child to eat. . Mealtimes need to be relaxed enjoyable stress free So that all those happy hormones can induce hunger, digestion, and a psychological desire to eat. . So step one to helping your fussy eater? Make mealtimes enjoyable. Need some hints on how to do that?
