25.01.2022 Well here we are almost one year since Townsvilles monsoon event. In the lead up to the anniversary we are going to talk about areas of your organisation that you can introduce controls into to hopefully make your organisations continuous operation as seamless as possible should it be affected by something as disastrous as a flood. There are two types of businesses that could be assessed. An established business i.e. one that is currently operating in a workspace and a new... venture that is in the process of being built and therefore is looking for a workspace. Lets look at a start-up and what the first phase might entail. Firstly, lets identify the risk. RISK: Business affected by disastrous weather event. CAUSE: Inundation by flooding. NOTE: This could be several types of weather event but for the purpose of the anniversary lets focus on flooding. Phase 1: Workspace Location. Control number 1 Choosing your location. Obviously, you know what type of business you are building and therefore what type of workspace you need i.e. office or warehouse etc. So, finding a location that is geographically and statistically less likely to be affected is Control number 1. I know that here in Townsville this research can be done, pretty much, cost free with the modelling from the 2019 monsoon and data from previous efforts from the city council. Please check your relevant city councils website for current information in your location. From this data you can find a location that may not have been affected in 2019. Your type of business may not afford you the benefit of choosing a location that was previously unaffected. This might be due to zoning laws and this is where further controls are even more important than they would normally be. This may seem pretty simple and maybe even common sense, but its an easy control to implement in order to avoid being affected by an event like last years flood. NOTE: Premium location for your business may come with a premium cost and this assessment does NOT take rental price into account. Courtesy Of Townsville City Council

23.01.2022 Some would argue that its too late to put in place controls for COVID-19. The team at PRIDE Human Performance have a great control, in the size of their facility while not compromising on the quality of the training you receive.

23.01.2022 Lets talk safety. Safety seems to be a very "in" topic at the moment but maybe not for all the right reasons. Lets take PPE for example. Some would say that its often over used and, dare I say it, maybe even be increasing risk. But if something like a high vis vest, for example, isnt actually mitigating any risk in the environment its being used, is it really needed? I acknowledge that some industries, like construction or mining, have a higher focus on safety than other...s but that doesnt mean safety should be put in the "parking bay" for another day or given a token effort. On the flip side, it also shouldnt be given all of the attention allowing the other areas of risk to be over looked and potentially exposing your organisation should a risk event occur. At Future Proof Risk Solutions we can help your organisation with a well-rounded risk management plan regardless of what sector it operates in.

21.01.2022 At Future Proof Risk Solutions we offer risk management services for any organisation. So lets get back to basics and ask, what is a risk? The ISO 31000 defines it as effect of uncertainty on objectives. NOTE 1: And affect is a deviation from the expected. It can be positive, negative or both, and can address, create full result in opportunities and threats.... Now lets not be too glass half empty about it all because, as it states, these effects could be positive as well as negative. So where do we start? Effectively naming the risk is what some organisations have problems with. If you cant frame the risk correctly then how can you expect to treat or mitigate it. At Future Proof Risk Solutions we can help you effectively identify, frame and manage your organisations risks.

20.01.2022 Online coaching isnt a new thing but with isolation being a real possibility, adapting your training to be done at home is a must. That coupled with businesses, of all types not just health and well-being, needing to morph how they do things, PRIDE Human Performance are putting everything in place to make sure they have both of these areas covered.

19.01.2022 Last time we looked at choosing a location for your organisation. Today we are going to touch on something reactive in insurance. Control number 2 Insuring your organisation... Choosing a location that has a higher likelihood of being affected isnt ideal but there are steps we can take to control this if your budget doesnt allow for the location you WANT. One of these is insurance. Lets list this as Control number 2. This is one control of which the fine print MUST be well read. Insurance companies will use the fine print to the best of their ability to avoid paying out a claim. E.g. There is a massive difference, according to insurance companies, between flooding and inundation. Flooding might be caused by a water pipe bursting or a washing machine breaking down whereas inundation is caused by flooding from a weather event. Check, double check and recheck the fine print. If you are confident with understanding the finer details of your policy thats great, however; if thats something that isnt your strong suit, speaking to an insurance broker would be well advised. Even though insurance is a reactive control for an event it is still, in most cases, the best way to protect your organisation should an event occur. courtesy of insurancebusinessmag.com

17.01.2022 So yesterday we talked a little bit about safety. Today Id like to touch on controls. As a part of any robust risk assessment we need to have a good control in place for these to be effective. You cant just give controls a lick and a promise by listing one just to have one there, we need to also assign these controls to a specific person. The reason this needs to be done is so that the implementation of these controls is accountable to a human. If theyre not accountable t...o a specific person the control may not be actioned and therefore the risk not mitigated and potentially exposing your organisation to a risk event. So it is absolutely imperative that when we list a control to mitigate the risk that a person be accountable for this control because without it, its just words on the page. This may sound very simple to some people who have been in the industry a while but lets face its commonsense and if commonsense was actually common, I probably wouldnt be writing this.

16.01.2022 Just a final thought for the working week.

15.01.2022 This state of the world at the moment and the need for social distancing may have a lot of us being less action than usual. The health risks associated with this car too many to list, so why not take control and reduce the likelihood of these health risk from eventuating with an at home session with PRIDE Human Performance. They have been conducting HITT session and mobility sessions just like this one all from their lounge room to yours. ... Keep an eye out out on their Facebook or instagram page for the next one and keep your health risks in check while still adhering to the social/physical distancing rules.

15.01.2022 Whether you know it or not we all assess risk in our lives on a daily basis. We all assess the likelihood hood of a risk event occurring, what we can put in place to reduce this likelihood(controls) and what will be the fallout(consequences) if it does eventuate. We all do it in our personal lives so why does it get put to the wayside in business? Its hard to prove a negative thats why! In business, especially small business, its extremely difficult to justify the expend...iture of risk analysis when there is no perceived return on the investment. But thats precisely what it is, an investment. Linking your organisations consequence matrix to its performance measures is how you can justify that outlay. At Future Proof Risk Solutions we can help you justify this important investment. #riskmanagement #futureproofrisksolutions #riskculture #townsvillelocal

13.01.2022 We mentioned earlier in the week about a daycare centre engaging their kids in risky activities and how, in our view, this should be encouraged. Here is example, from 2018, of schools doing the same thing. They are setting aside injury concerns to help children build resilience and squeeze in much-needed physical activity, in an age where screen time dominates and where one in four children is either overweight or obese. Encouraging risky behaviour in children is only g...oing to value add to their life. By wrapping kids in cottonwool it doesnt teach them to throw caution to the wind and just have some fun. By doing this they are also learning that taking risks is okay and its also getting kids doing physical activity. But it doesnt need to be limited to just kids, does it? Yes its important that we teach the future generations that accepting risk is a necessity, and lets face it it is. Why should that be limited to just children? Cant adults engage in and learn (good)risky behaviour too? Or is it a case of you cant teach an old dog new tricks mentality? Either way encouraging kids to take risks through play is only going to result in them learning things. And who knows maybe adults could even learn something from them too?

12.01.2022 Well here we are at the 1 year anniversary of the Townsville flood. We know that this past 12 months hasnt been easy for the Townsville community as a result of the flood and we wish everyone affected all the best. Business Continuity Control number 2... The controls we have looked at so far are choosing a suitable location for your organisations workspace if you are starting out and insurance for that location. In the Business Continuity portion we have touched on data back-up for all your valuable operating information. What we are going to look at now is your organisations operating continuity, as far as a location is concerned, should an event occur. The type of business you are operating will depend on how easy it is to plan for a secondary SUITABLE location post event. If you have a small business the best option might be to operate from home until your primary location is back up and running. Whereas if you are a tradie and are out on the tools all day the only thing you may need is a garage to store your tools and a space to put your laptop in which case you may not be affected at all. But if you operate something larger and less mobile you will need to look at secondary locations. Now I know that actually maintaining a secondary location is NOT a financially viable option in most businesses so there are other ways to address this. It could be something as simple as talking to your commercial real estate agent and keeping up to date with the vacant properties that will be suitable for your organisation should an event occur. Well for some organisations, and families, it has been a long 12 months since Townsvilles monsoon event and some people are still not back to where they were before it happened, and to be honest some never will. We hope that this series of posts has helped you in some way with your organisations risk management. As always if you have any questions or would like to engage us at Future Proof Risk Solutions to assist your organisation with its risk management dont hesitate to contact us.

12.01.2022 This weekend on Sunrise I caught the end of an article that was talking about a childcare centre conducting risky activities with the kids in their care. The headline of the article did its job and caught my eye. Childcare centre embraces risk. The activities they were doing were using hammers, wood and nails to learn resilience which I would be absolutely happy with if my kids attended this centre. This type of phrasing gets me excited because it gets people talking ...about risk and the NEED for organisations to do embrace the risk in order to do what they do well. I have previously spoken about kids taking risks daily and in our house we encourage our kids to do activities that need them to take risks. We already live in a time where kids spend a lot of time on devices and not outside, so encouraging risky play is more important than ever if we want them to grow up and not perpetuate a risk adverse society.

12.01.2022 Kids! Arent they amazing?! Wouldnt it be great to not have to worry about taking risks like they do? Or do they?... Kids accept the risk in what they do everyday without even realising it, while still seeming like they totally disregard it. Accepting risk is a must no matter what industry or sector your organisation operates in, however; you shouldnt totally disregard it. Some risks will need a higher tolerance than others no matter what the controls you put in place. While we dont expect you to disregard the risks in your organisation we can help you accept their tolerances while mitigating, if not eliminating them. #risk #riskmanagement #whatsyourtolerance #riskculture #riskmanager #riskassessment

09.01.2022 Crisis management vs risk management When it comes to managing risk in any organisation there are two ways to do it. Either do it and be proactive or dont do it and be reactive. (There are subsets of the dont do it side like do it half assed in which case you may as well not do it) From this we can say that there is one way to manage risk, being proactive, and one way to manage a crisis, by being reactive. ... Assessing the risk events your organisation could face and the potential consequences of those allows you to put structures in place to lessen the likelihood of that risk event occurring, whereas doing the crisis management after a risk event occurs is going to have you chasing your tail and feel like you cant, at best , get back to where you were before it happened. Trying to pickup the pieces after a risk event occurs will never really recover the organisation back to where it was prior to the event. There will always be that oh but werent they the ones that botched the project because of....... leaving reputational damage behind, potentially, forever. At future Proof Risk Solutions we can help your organisation be proactive and get ahead of the risks that it may encounter. Avoid doing the arduous and stressful work of crisis management and allow us to assess your risks to.

08.01.2022 The risks that come with living in Australia. Its that time of year in Australia, and especially up here in the north, that fun in the sun is usually the go to when it comes activities over the summer period. In my opinion the risk of taking on excessive UV Rays is very easily controlled and its already done for us with the constant ad campaigns we see. The controls for this are literally as simple as slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. With consequences in the realm as s...evere as major surgery or, worst case, death these controls are easily implemented and, when done correctly, effective. If you want you risk Management to be this simple get in contact with us at Future Proof Risk Solutions.

08.01.2022 So this is the first post in what I hope is a long career in risk management. Starting this venture something Ive been contemplating for a while, as it in itself has a wide range of risks. In the coming weeks well look at some of those and what can be done to control them. Exciting times ahead. ... #riskmanagement #firstpost

07.01.2022 Lets talk reputational consequence. Sometimes it can be hard to understand or even measure how the people in your organisation view or indeed if they care about it. Surely its a sign of how an organisation treats its workers or how the workers view the organisation when an employee doesnt see any consequence in how they conduct themselves while at work. ... Specifically Im talking about a worker relieving themselves in full view of a major highway WHILE WEARING COMPANY CLOTHING. Forget about the incident for a minute. The fact that is the employee of whatever organisation it might be, it could be a small business or a multimillion dollar corporation, thinks its okay to expose the organisation to reputational risk like that absolutely blows my mind. Im not going to name or shame companies thats not what this is about. I just think that it is indicative of the culture that that organisation promotes or fosters that an employee would see fit to do that in that organisations particular uniform in full view of the public So lets go out there and think about how we treat our workers and indeed how workers treat the organisation. Lets foster a culture that promotes the value that an employee brings to the table and would not risk the reputation of the organisation theyre in.

06.01.2022 So far in these posts we have looked at controls that are both proactive(choosing a safe location) and reactive(appropriate insurance). Over the next few posts we are going to look at the Business Continuity Management portion of disaster planning/recovery. What does this mean you may ask? Well this brings us to phase 2. Business Continuity Management is defined as:... the discipline of developing and maintaining advance plans of action to enable an organisation to respond to an event [risk event or disaster] in such a manner that its critical business processes continue with minimal or no disruption and that the impact upon staff, customers, products and services is also minimised -Secure Media Storage UK Think of a Business Continuity Plan like a disaster playbook should the worst eventuate. While you should/will have a detailed separate Business Continuity Plan that outlines what needs to be done to best plan for your businesses continual operation, we will look at a snapshot of what some of the controls from that may include. Control number 1 No matter what type of business or organisation you run there is a 99% chance that you will have an IT element that aids you in running it. Along with this IT comes data storage and client/sales information you have collected or will undoubtedly collect once you start trading. Backing up your organisations IT system will not only retain your client information but also give your business continuity in its operation should an event occur. There are numerous ways to back-up your data. You may want to use something simple and free like a cloud-based system if you are just starting out and looking to keep costs down or if you have the money you may want to employ an IT expert to setup off-site back-up for your data. If IT systems arent your thing you may want to simply talk to an expert in the field and find out what the best plan for your organisation is when it comes to backing up your valuable data. The listed options, or controls, are by no means an exhaustive list so if you have any doubts please dont hesitate to contact us here at Future Proof Risk Solutions. courtesy of business2community.com
