25.01.2022 New Episode This week, we had the good fortune to hang out with Sophie Hansen from @localislovely. For the last decade, she’s been plating up important messages about slow living, local produce and reverence for farmers (disguised as lip smacking seasonal recipes) on her exceedingly popular blog (and in books, and workshops, and events!).... In this convo, Sophie takes us backstage to life on a deer farm, her city-to-rural transition, raising contented kids, sharing with abandon and letting her love of great food take her in all manner of delicious directions. This chat is satisfying listening for anyone who thinks a better world starts with the simple act of coming together over food. Listen now, wherever podcasts bloom https://www.buzzsprout.com//4523807-backstage-with-sophie-
25.01.2022 LEGEND ALERT Today we chat to Johno Hunter from Conscious Ground in Byron Bay, an earth school that produces changemaking humans and delicious food in equal measure. On this working organic farm, Johno and his team have created a world class agri-educational facility, mentoring people through earth care and regeneration, people care and leadership training, and all kinds of skills like driving tractors to thinking holistically about life.... Johno is one of those humans whose grit, determination and practicality will inspire you to keep it real and put a little strategy around your dreams (in fact, he's sometimes called the 'Dream Assassin', injecting much-needed reality into those rosy ideals). You’ll hear about his dislike of school, his incredible father and role model, his methods of self-reflection and values-realignment, and the ritualistic structure of his everyday. Enjoy this tangible, practical and actionable conversation with a certified organic legend! https://www.buzzsprout.com//4914635-johno-hunter-regenerat
24.01.2022 Oh yeah, that sweet season two feeling Yesterday we fired up our laptops, plugged in our headphones, and pressed the big red record button with our very first #futuresteading guest for season two. (She’s pretty bloody awesome. Identity and wisdom revealed Monday at 6am!) Excavating the inner workings of all kinds of people, in all manner of fields, all with the underlying intention to live with integrity is a total privilege. We felt it keenly after our short hiatus. ... More than the information our guests have to share (which is bloody stellar, mind you) the thing that makes our spines tingle and faces crack into luminous grins is the sense of solidarity that comes from every conversation. We’re reminded just how many others are out there, like cells in the human body, like pixels in a photograph, all doing their bit to create a more beautiful world - in infinitely unique and worthwhile ways. It’s easy to forget our inherent togetherness, especially in times of social isolation and (anti)social media, where one-on-one connections have been severed and we’re all left feeling rather bereft; like we may be the only people on earth thinking these thoughts, trying to make a difference, plugging away at a lonely and hopeless task. Nope. Each week when we hear those bright voices (in our very rudimentary recording suite) we remember that we’re in good company. We’re part of a giant web of loving, caring, living-like-it-matters individuals. A network that’s spreading, strengthening, doing its mycelial thing - person by person, neighbour by neighbour, random podcast listener by random podcast listener. The most important thing is that this online content jumps down from the clouds and onto the grass, inspiring everyday action and engagement. We hope that season two brings even more reasons to tune in then strike out make change in whatever tiny and meaningful ways matter to you. Can’t wait to hang out on Monday at 6am. #podcast #futuresteading #changemaking
22.01.2022 Ears need nutrition? Tomorrow on the pod, we release our long-awaited interview with Naomi Hogan: Certified Eco Bad Ass. She's the National Coordinator of Lock The Gate Alliance and over the past decade, has worked closely with regional communities, Traditional Owners and farming groups across Australia. ... With rock-solid media, communications and community-action-building skillz, Naomi hangs out on the frontline of climate instability and concern over the expansion of coal and fracking projects - and makes a ruckus. Despite the magnitude of her long-standing commitments, she's a lighthearted, level-headed and hopeful human who will bring ample solidarity and sustenance to your eardrums. We can't wait to deliver this baby at 6am Monday morning. Tune in then!
21.01.2022 We were all lined up to be at the off grid living festival last week but it didn't happen. So instead, the legends pulled together an off grid living magazine (It's online and free). Check it out. So cool! http://www.offgridlivingfestival.com.au/offgridmagazine
20.01.2022 New episode ~ Charlie Showers Before you ask, yes this is Charlie Showers of Black Barn Farm - Jade's other half. Charlie is a fair food advocate, holistic orchardist, landscape scientist and insatiable reader, with an appetite for knowledge that sees him getting up before the birds to devour scientific papers, books and teachings, before putting it into practice at Black Barn Farm.... In this conversation, he shares decades of wisdom with his trademark patience, clarity and intellect. He covers the power of community and regional pride, a new way to frame our 'hypocrisy' in this time of transition, the reality of first generation farming and a sugar-free account of a 'working marriage' and unified vision. You'll get to hear Jade's answers too ;) No hopium, all clarity in this complex interview that inspires action! https://www.buzzsprout.com//5204821-charlie-showers-fair-f
20.01.2022 Big Jar Energy at the urban homestead Who else relishes that restocked, bulk-food-friendly, hand-labeled pantry feeling? Creating a home food culture can start with something as simple as putting your favourite herbs and spices on display (and lead to a greater engagement with food that begets curiosity, education and increasingly thoughtful choices).... Happy totally-organised Tuesday, Futuresteaders
19.01.2022 WE'RE BACK! Season two is now ready for your listening pleasure! We couldn't be more excited to be kicking it off with this living legend. If there's a human who represents the quintessential qualities of living like tomorrow matters, it just might be Hannah Maloney. A former front line picketer, Hannah transitioned to a more sustainable approach to advocacy for climate action and First Nations justice when she founded Good Life Permaculture and is now based in Tassie on Muwinina country where days of voluntary simplicity provide time for her community which she collaborates with to teach, design and live with love. Hannah is a radical homemaker who is currently writing a book, blogging her knowledge for all to learn from and has recently forayed into the world of television presenting on Gardening Australia.
18.01.2022 Stoked to be recommended a number of times as a cracking podcast to get in your ears. A multitude of other pods listed in this line up too. Enjoy the listen x
18.01.2022 New episode with Alexx Stuart from Low Tox Life Some people are born storytellers. And some of those people have magical, lyrical voices that transport you instantly. Such is Alexx Stuart. You might already know her as the wellness maven and recipe Queen behind Low Tox Life, but this convo takes the story further -- back to childhood, right to the heart of who she is, and everything she's learned about life as a changemaker.... Alexx shares how her city-based life growing food on her balcony and making consciously considered choices has led to social success. In her words: Social success is about doing more for the world than what it gives to us. Deeply held success really comes when it’s not just about looking after yourself but when you’ve committed to something bigger." Join us in this convo about questioning authority, building community, supporting mental health and making change in joyous, positive and peaceful ways. https://www.buzzsprout.com//7449358-alexx-stuart-on-rewrit
17.01.2022 Woah Nelly! It's our final episode for season one - and what an episode it is! Today we chat to Dan Palmer, one of our all-time heroes.... Dan is co-founder of Permablitz Melbourne, Landed, Holistic Decision Making, Making Permaculture Stronger and Very Edible Gardens. He has a PhD in systems thinking and contagious levels of enthusiasm for supporting the journeys of others. He currently lives with his wife and two daughters in a small home in Castlemaine, Victoria. We hear Dan’s thoughts on consciously shaping a vibrant and beautiful life, getting paid for your passion, how to be vulnerable and cut to the chase (rather than participating in superficial BS), the deception of ideas, the illusion of separation from the natural world and why to ask better questions. We'll be back in a few short weeks with our next round of interviews, but in the meantime, get out there and REVEL in this springtime wonderland. Thank you so much for joining us for our first 25 episodes. Being part of this switched on, curious and endlessly creative community has been a joy, and we're excited to deepen the conversation and connection in season two. 15.01.2022 This episode's a cracker! If changing the world over breakfast sounds like your kind of activism, you’ll love this conversation with Cassie Duncan; a woman who took her passion for a fairer food system and plated it up as an accessible, digestible and inspiring not-for-profit Sustainable Table. Cassie co-founded Sustainable Table in 2009 as a way to help more Aussies make ethical choices about what they eat. Through beautifully written articles, educational events and inn...ovative campaigns that connect eaters with farmers in deeply emotional (and motivating) ways, Sustainable Table taps into the most powerful change agent of all: story. Today, we hear Cassie’s; how she became the ethical food champion she is, why we need to humanise our food system, what our eating choices can change (hint: everything), how she overcame imposter syndrome and why it’s impossible to be the perfect parent. Enjoy ample wisdom and solidarity in this free-wheeling conversation with one of our favourite guests so far. Dig in. https://www.buzzsprout.com//5312707-cassie-duncan-founder-
13.01.2022 NEW EPISODE - Pip magazine founder Robyn Rosengeldt on taking small steps! Join us for a calming conversation about how to make a difference without the overwhelm. In true surfie style, Robyn Rosenfeldt is laid back - despite riding a wave of daily to-dos and permaculture reporting as the founder of #pipmagazine (Not already all over pip? It’s a dedicated Aussie permaculture mag with everything from foraging tips to renegade urban gardeners, seed saving, waste-busting, soil b...uilding and good old fashioned storytelling.) Robyn started Pip from scratch, so of course, we were itching to get inside her mind and understand the process of turning passion into print, beliefs into features, change making into this beautiful, uplifting, shareable thing you can hold in your hands. And with her refreshingly realistic advice and natural optimism, you just might find yourself taking small steps in the direction of your dreams in about an hour’s time.
13.01.2022 Awww sheesh!!! Pretty stoked to see futuresteading appear loads of times on this thread. Thanks for your support and recommendations everyone. We're back with the next episode I season two on Monday the 18th
12.01.2022 Need something to feel good about? Cyndi O'Meara of Changing Habits can help! This week on the pod, spend an hour looking through the lens of anthropology, nutrition and vitalism with Cyndi O’Meara, author of ‘Changing Habits, Changing Lives’ (once just a book, now an entire movement).... Cyndi's wisdom is born of deep scientific research and understanding coupled with a refreshing awe for the body's innate healing potential. We journey back to her childhood (where seeds of big pharma skepticism were sown), talk all things success (and being an anti-statistic), how she embraces the Japanese concept of Ikigai, and why becoming a farmer at age 50 was a peak-fulfilment moment. This episode will (re)inspire you to love your bod, tap into its remarkable potential, and get into life! Listen. Absorb. Enjoy. https://www.buzzsprout.com//4810151-cyndi-o-meara-talks-he
09.01.2022 Episode 10 Should we try to lead virtuous, principled lives or do what feels good? Beau Miles makes a strong case for taking ourselves a little less seriously and having a lot more local fun.... This backyard adventurer and wildly popular filmmaker (most often found up a tree, running a midnight marathon or eating his bodyweight in beans) reckons he doesn’t know much about anything. But beneath the self-deprecation, Beau is a wealth of ecological wisdom and a master storyteller, taking us right to the heart of what really matters in life. Get into this philosophical, tangential, slightly mad and marvellously contrarian conversation - then get out there. Available on iTunes, Spotify, the ether #listen #listen #listen #up
08.01.2022 Creating a podcast is such an interesting exercise. While we aim to keep our interviews as relaxed as possible, once you hit the big red record button, those casual chats are made concrete. (Best not to dwell on it!) As is usually the case when you try something new, podcasting has only increased our respect for people who speak so eloquently and publicly about things that matter to them. It’s no small feat of confidence and consistency; keeping ideas aligned over time.... There’s inherent tension between getting ‘the most’ out of our deep thinking guests and engaging in genuine conversation - one that (we think) is better if both sides give and take, offer personal asides, shoot for thought-provoking rather than deliberately provocative. This might not be Andrew Denton-level inquisition, but it’s what feels right to us. And we bow before seasoned interviewers who make this task appear effortless. Before we started recording, we made a pact: If nobody listens to Futuresteading, that’s cool. We’re here to plunge into new personal territory. It had to be fun. (And our secret aspiration: to encourage anyone as mad as us to get out there and have a go, too.) The fact that so many of you are listening, and enjoying, and offering us constructive feedback makes our hearts swell and minds boggle. We are truly grateful that you’re here with us, bearing with our podcasting naivety, and gaining insights from our guests. Expectations, eclipsed. This post is rambling like a wayward blackberry. But inspired, in part, by editing next week’s shortie episode - which is illuminating the complexity of making words public. We wanted to share a little of this backstage process in the spirit of keeping it human. To give love to anyone bravely sharing right now (and the time to do so is definitely *now*). It’s an imperfect exercise, this sharing business, this collective conversation, involving constant revision and recognition that we don’t always get it right. Reflect. Reorient. But if podcasting has taught us anything, it’s that there’s always more to someone or something than meets the eye, and the best way forward is through the ears. Thank you for listening.
07.01.2022 Remember this champ? We interviewed back at the very beginning of series one. She's one our of most downloaded pods so we know you love her already. Consider supporting her brilliant creative stylings!
07.01.2022 Herbs aren’t drugs, and we shouldn’t expect them to perform like drugs. They’re food. They work with the human body in intuitive ways we can’t yet explain. So, Catie is a trained naturopath! In today's Shortie, we dig into her brown bottle education and go deep into her love of medicinal plants as culinary healers, esoteric friends and nourishing allies for life. This ep focuses on the simplest ways you can build relationships with our green community and tap into the po...werful benefits of backyard herbalism. We hope it inspires you to get out there and have a yarn with a rosemary bush! https://www.buzzsprout.com//4707584-futuresteading-shortie
07.01.2022 First show back after a wee festive break! And the fact that's it's a corker goes without saying. How does a family of five go from 'regular' consumption to producing just one minuscule jar of waste in a year? Find out in this chat with Lauren and Oberon Carter -- founders of Zero Waste Families, authors of A Family Guide to Waste Free Living and the brains behind Spiral Garden.... These deliciously non-dogmatic Tasmanians treat us to a personal account of financial, professional and psychological transition, how they reduced their energy consumption by a massive 60%, what they're doing to engage their street and community, and why to have hope in the next generation of considerate and creative human beings. 06.01.2022 The clever writer Eva Peroni recently interviewed Jade as part of the 'food first' counterstory for change quest. Take a read. https://foodfirst.org/times-of-crisis-demand-counterstorie/
06.01.2022 If you haven't spent an hour with Kirsten in your ears yet then get on it. She is one wise-as-woman!
05.01.2022 EPISODE 11 Kirsten Bradley has dedicated the last 13 years (in cahoots with partner Nick Ritar and a host of thinkers and doers) to helping people learn permaculture skills for living like it matters. We’re referring to Milkwood, of course. And today we get a backstage pass to the brain of its co-creator; a joyous conversation indeed.... Kirsten has a knack for distilling big ideas into bite size words of wisdom, bringing decades of lived experience to our cuppa-tea-with-a-mate interview that will leave you feeling affirmed and hopeful. She shares her trajectory from inner-city artist to iconic permaculture educator, author and champion of back-to-basics living. Her thoughts on long-term renting, community sufficiency, ways of stewarding land (that don’t necessarily involve buying a massive property), how to bypass hypocrisy and why to get comfy with shades of grey. Post-episode, you’ll probably want to knock on your neighbour’s door and offer them surplus garden greens - because, according to Kirsten, community connection is the bedrock of a better life (and planet). Listen, absorb, enjoy. iTunes, Spotify, all good poddy platforms
05.01.2022 Need some lockdown solidarity? Here’s 20 minutes of it, with a real and honest chat about our experiences, and insights, from the ongoing Victorian lockdown. Jade’s juggling kids on the farm in Stage 3 while Catie is chucking tanties at her laptop in Melbourne’s Stage 4. We hope this little small glimpse into our everyday is akin to a virtual hug. Caveat: There's no one experience of lockdown, nor prescription for doing it right. We acknowledge our relative good fortune whil...e honouring the tougher-than-tough reality of so many others. https://www.buzzsprout.com//5106652-futuresteading-shortie
05.01.2022 Simple is beautiful. Nature is art. What better way to add colour, flair and cosiness to your home (while sidestepping the need to Buy More Shit) than with a sprig of herbs, a handful of snapdragons, or (if you're lucky) cast off foliage from a neighbour's regal gum? There's so much pressure to 'have the perfect home': immaculate and Instagrammable, decked out with expensive rugs, distressed-but-expensive furniture and trendy art. ... And while creativity knows no bounds and thriftiness gets you everywhere, you can just as easily pop an artichoke frond, a flowering succulent or a bushel of rainbow chard in a jar and call it interior decorating. Something green or leafy, something edible from the market, some cool rock or nut or stick will always be available; an evergreen decorating resource that costs nothing - and can go straight back to the compost. Oh, snap (dragon).
