24.01.2022 Introducing our next local chef, Kurt Neumann, owner of Grazing in Gundaroo. Read below Kurt's top tips for when visiting the Fyshwick Markets! Q: What is favourite thing to get from the Fyshwick Markets?... A: I don't think I have one 'favourite thing' to purchase from the Markets. It really depends on what I require or what I'm looking for. I do purchase regularly from one of the seafood outlets, but I do love browsing the delicatessens. Q: How do you enjoy the Markets? Do you have any best kept secrets? A: The Markets are a great resource to get a feel for what's in season. I enjoy walking through the different outlets, particularly the fresh fruit and vegetable sellers and seeing what's available, range and abundance. In winter, I love visiting the chestnut roaster at the bottom of the car park, it's a great way to warm you up on a cold day. Q: Any tips for shoppers in making a list/what do buy/shop effectively? A: When it comes to shopping successfully at the Markets, be prepared! Purchase all of your non-perishable items first, saving delicate items such as meat, seafood and smallgoods until last, particularly in summer. When purchasing your seafood, don't be afraid to ask the fishmonger to supply you with a small bag of ice to help keep things cold. Always grab a coffee and if the temptation is too strong a nice little pastry as well is always a nice little treat. Q: If Grazing was a person, what would it buy from the Markets? A: Well that list would be way too long. For special occasions, I always make a trip to one of the delicatessens, spend WAY too much time buying plenty of sliced salumi and cheeses for charcuterie plates. Fresh seafood is always a family favourite and I find it hard to resist a few oysters for the table. Visit Kurt and his wife at their beautiful restaurant, where their meals are made with some of the freshest and best produce the region has to offer.

24.01.2022 Introducing our Guest Chef Series! At the Markets, we are proud to support and supply local chefs and restaurants around Canberra with fresh, quality produce. Here we sit down with some of these chefs and find out their shopping secrets and what's in their shopping baskets!... For our first guest, we welcome chef Mark Raets (known as Raetsy) from Teddy Picker's. 1. What is your favourite thing to get from the Fyshwick Markets? Anything from Plonk! But also anything I haven’t seen or used before. My advice is to try and not make going to the Markets an in-and-out thing. Give yourself time to have a dig. 2. Do you have any best-kept secrets of the Markets? The best-kept secret of the Markets is getting down there on a Sunday afternoon when the fruit and veg suppliers and the butchers are discounting everything. Don’t get there too late otherwise, it’ll all be gone! 3. Do you have any tips for shoppers in making a list or how to shop effectively? If you can’t find what you’re looking for, ask for help. With your list, be open to suggestions to get the most out of what’s available and in season. All the suppliers are so happy to help. 4. If Teddy Picker's was a person, what would it buy from the markets? Anything from Plonk or Mart Delicatessen. Visit Teddy Picker's from 6:30am-3pm weekdays and 8am-2pm on weekends for their delicious coffee and food!

22.01.2022 If you listen closely, fresh produce has plenty of stories to tell. One of which is the family behind the store. Here at the Fyshwick Markets, many of our stores are generational family-run businesses, who over the decades come together every week to help bring fresh, quality food to your own family's table. We thought it was about time you got to know some of these special families. ... Introducing the first of our Fyshwick Markets Families: Matt, Bec and Jordan from Unique Meats Fyshwick Markets. Beginning in 2001, Matt and Bec started Unique Meats with one small store in the Jerrabomberra local shopping centre. It was this year that Jordan was also born. Over the following nineteen years, the trio would grow, both as a family and in business, with four locations and a very busy wholesale side of the business providing quality meat to the Raiders clubs, Eastlake’s clubs, as well many well-known restaurants and cafes in and around the Canberra region. Matt and Bec are very proud of Jordan, who has grown from a newborn baby into the man he is today, with his own clientele and following. Matt, Bec and Jordan feel both privileged and honoured to have the opportunity to be able to work together as a family, as long as Matt always remembers who the real boss is! Comment below your favourite memory or product from Unique Meats and go in the draw to win a $50 Fyshwick Markets voucher. Entries close Thursday 27 August 9am.

22.01.2022 Have you entered our Father’s Day Giveaway?! Up for grabs is this delicious hamper and 2 x $100 Fyshwick Markets vouchers. Hurry, entries close Wednesday 2 September 5pm!... Visit our recent post to enter!

22.01.2022 It's Father's Day this Sunday and we thought we would celebrate by interviewing an iconic father-son team at the Markets! Introducing Anthony and his sons Louis (left) and Elliot (right) from Plonk! Q: Best thing about working together?... A: As a family-owned business, it's a very special thing to have your sons work with you in a business that we created from scratch almost 15 years ago. At the end of the shift, we always open one or two newly arrived products to share with family and staff....all in the name of product knowledge. Haha! Q: Favourite drink to share together? A: We love to grab a few current independently-owned Australian craft beers. But last year we were able to take the family and our Plonk team up to Batch Brewing Company to create a Plonk and Batch Brewery collaboration beer called What Gose Around, a gose style refreshing favourite. There are so many great styles to try these days, it’s just awesome to see people mix and match and discover new beers every week! At this time of year, there are amazing dark beers being released that include porters, stouts and imperial stouts. Favourites include BentSpoke Brewing Co's Cluster 8 (Triple IPA) and Capital Brewing Co.'s First Tracks Imperial Stout. Q: Best and worst Father's Day gift you have ever given/received? A: Best - Mug that says 'They say you are what you eat, but I don't remember eating a freaking legend'. Worst - Pair of socks .....why? Our cat, Ben, ran off with them! Q: One thing you've learnt from each other? A: The boys have grown up being part of the business for the past decade and a half and now are fine young men who have great ideas on products to stock, special ways to merchandise the store and they make sure they blend in to work with the rest our team. Visit Anthony, Louis, Elliot and the rest of the amazing team at Plonk, who will help you pick out the perfect present this Father's Day. If in doubt, we recommend their Father's Day Beer Box, which includes 11 craft beers and a Weihenstphaner glass for $69.90!

21.01.2022 Enjoy this delicious old-fashioned lemony lemonade to quench your thirst on a hot summer’s day in Canberra. You could even make a grown-up version by adding a shot of The Canberra Distillery gin from Plonk and lemon rind to add pizazz to any occasion. Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes... Servings: 4 Recipe by Ang Quinlan from GH Nutrition Ingredients Lemonade Syrup (makes 3-4 cups) 3 cups sugar 3 cups water 1 cm piece of fresh ginger, sliced Lemonade Mix Zest of 1 lemon 2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (8 10 lemons) 4 cups water Method Add the lemon zest to the freshly squeezed lemon juice and set aside. Lemonade Syrup: Combine the sugar, water and ginger in a saucepan and simmer over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Set aside to cool. Remove ginger. Add cup of the lemon juice and cup of the lemon syrup to each glass, top with water (tap or sparkling). You can adjust the sweetness as required. Serve with ice cubes, mint or oregano leaves, and extra lemon slices.

21.01.2022 At the Fyshwick Markets, we take great pride in the long family histories involved with many of our stores. Wiffens - Premium Green Grocerss is a true testament of what it means to run a generational family business. Introducing husband and wife Jack and Barbara, their son David and his partner Ruth, for our next featured family of the Fyshwick Markets! Q: How long have you been working together for? ... A: We all have a very long history of working with fresh food! Jack in particular has been involved with fresh produce for over 50 years. He helped his father from age 10 collect fruit and vegetables direct from farmers and travelled around the local area selling the produce off the back of a truck. Within our family, Jack and I have been working together for a lifetime! Our son David and his partner Ruth have been helping us at Wiffens for 14 years now. Their children, Ajax (8) and Lucy (9), also love helping out in the shop and might one day be fourth-generation greengrocers. Q: The best thing about working together as a family? A: Being able to trust and rely on each other. Plus our ability to all get over any disagreements pretty quickly and move on. Q: A quirky thing that someone in the family does at work? A: Hmmmm - everyone has different ways of doing things and different approaches. What you learn with experience is to try and not let the little things get to you or annoy you. At the end of the day, we all love what we do and are all just coming from a place of trying to do the best job we can for our customers and staff. Q: If you weren't all working together at Wiffens what would you be doing for a job? A: Dave wishes he could be a professional golfer. Ruth feels very lucky at Wiffens with a lifelong interest in food but otherwise would like to be self-employed in another business. I would perhaps be a professional travel photographer and Jack is living the dream! Comment below your favourite item or experience at Wiffens and go into the draw to win a $50 Fyshwick Markets voucher. Entries close Monday 21 September 9am.

18.01.2022 STOP high volume waste processing sites coming to Fyshwick and sign the petition! CRS (16 Ipswich Street) proposes to process 300,000 tonnes of kerbside waste by diverting rubbish trucks from Mugga Lane to Fyshwick. Hi Quality (14 Tennant Street) proposes to process 1.1 million tonnes of industrial, commercial, demolition and liquid waste and asbestos-containing material. ... - This would look like 148 movements an hour or 19m long 40 tonne trucks - 1 every 24 seconds. - 40% more waste than the annual load at Mugga Lane. - Hume is the right place for resource recovery, not Fyshwick. - Moving waste from government facilities at Mugga Lane to private facilities in Fyshwick is not a solution to our waste management challenges. 07.01.2022 Introducing another of our favourite father-son duos, Marco and Joey Caputo from Piccolo Market Coffee. Read below a fun little interview we did with the boys. Q: The best thing about working together?... Marco: Offering our customers a small family business, which in this day and age is something that is less common. Rachel, Sophia, Joey and even on the odd occasion our youngest Milli can all be in the shop and on hand on any given day. I think our customers like the family feel we offer. Joey: The banter. Q: Who makes the nicer coffee? Marco: Well it depends on who you ask. Joey likes to fluff around with the artwork on the creama, whereas my focus is more on consistency and my aim is to make the first 7am coffee taste as good as the last at 4pm. We have customers who will specifically ask for either Joey or myself to make their coffee. I don’t really mind but Joey will try to talk them out of it and sometimes can take offence. Joey: It depends on who you ask. I'd say I have the artwork over him but he reckons he’s better for some reason. Q: One thing you've learnt from each other? Marco: Joey has taught me that old middle-aged men should act their age, stay in their lane and not try and mix it up with the modern-day younger hipsters... Joey: Dad is all about pace with making his coffee so he has taught me how to be quick when it's busy times. Visit the Caputo family, and see who makes the better coffee for yourself, at the Niche Markets every Thursday to Sunday!

04.01.2022 NO WASTE FOR FYSHWICK CAMPAIGN! Despite a critical Environmental Impact Statement, waste facilities in Fyshwick have cleared another barrier to go ahead with two high volume waste facilities planned for Fyshwick. What does this mean:... An estimated 1.4 million tonnes of waste to be trucked into Fyshwick per annum for sorting, transferring and processing. This includes waste not generated in Fyshwick or even the ACT! An estimated 160,000 heavy vehicle traffic movements per annum, in already congested areas such as Canberra Avenue, Ipswich Street and Newcastle Street. Facility to be approximately 2km from the Fyshwick Markets. The Fyshwick Business Association, as well as the Fyshwick Markets and majority of other small-medium businesses in Fyshwick, oppose the proposal to have waste facilities Fyshwick. In response to this, the Fyshwick Business Association has created a petition to take to the Legislative Assembly but we need your support. To help save Fyshwick and to support your local businesses, please click the link below to sign the petition. https://epetitions.act.gov.au/CurrentEPetition.aspx We thank you in advance for your support.

A: Fruit and vegetables of course, but also seafood. There aren’t many places in Canberra that you can get seafood fresh every day.... Q: Do you have any best-kept secrets of the Fyshwick Markets? A: Get to know the shops and the owners, and they will tell you what’s good and what’s in season. I also like to buy things I’ve never seen before. Q: Do you have any tips for shoppers in making a list or how to shop effectively? A: Stock up on your dried goods and things for the pantry - that’s your beans, nuts, tinned tomatoes etc. The Nut Shoppe is great for this - you always get good value. Then when you’re at home and you have nothing fresh you know you can make something from the pantry. Wiffens is great for high-quality fruit and vegetables. Q: If Gather was a person, what would it buy from the Fyshwick Markets? A: Gather is healthy but it’s not boring healthy, so it wouldn’t just buy kale, it would be edible flowers, microgreens and different coloured tomatoes. Also, masarepa flour - this is typically used to make empanadas but we get creative and make pancakes out of it. Visit William at his beautiful cafe in Braddon, where the food is delicious, healthy and sourced locally!
