18.01.2022 We have seen without a doubt an increase in security issues in Canberra Apartment & Townhouse Complexes the last few months. Apartment/ Townhouse buildings are... just as vulnerable to break-ins and theft as other homes. Poor safety and security habits could put your whole building at risk. Most offenders are opportunists, and search for quick, easy entry and exit points. Some great tips! Storage areas Use heavy duty locks on your storage cage. Cover up your belongings by setting up a cover or tarp so your property cannot be seen from outside your storage cage. Balcony and apartment security Living several floors up doesn’t make your home secure from intruders. Many high-rise break-ins occur by intruders climbing apartment building balconies and entering through unlocked balcony doors or windows. On lower levels, goods and bicycles left unsecured can be common targets. Lock balcony doors and windows at all times, even when you’re at home. For a cheap quick fix, a piece of dowel in a window or sliding door runner can be just as effective as a lock. Don’t leave your keys or wallet near the balcony door where burglars could see them or smash a glass panel and reach them. Wallets and cards are a quick win for burglars and more offenders are breaking into homes to grab car keys so they can steal your car. Most homes that are broken into do not have a security alarm. An alarm system could help protect your home and they come with a range of features to suit different budgets. Place stickers and signs around your home to warn burglars of an alarm system or Neighbourhood Watch. Install sensor lights that turn on with movement. Check your outside lights, windows and door locks regularly to ensure they are operating correctly. Keep valuables somewhere hard to find. Burglars often target jewellery in jewellery boxes on bedroom dressers and other valuables in bedside drawers and cupboards. Vehicles and bikes The Lock and hide to protect your ride and Lock it or lose it tips by Australia Federal police apply to cars and bikes parked in a shared apartment garage. Always lock your vehicle and remove any valuables, including your garage door remote. If you have a motorbike or bicycle, its best to cover it when in a shared garage, so people are less likely to see what you have or draw attention to it. Use strong locks and anchor it to the ground or at least secure the wheels.

15.01.2022 Detective Station Sergeant Mark Rowswell is reminding Canberrans about the importance of home security. Of all home burglaries examined in the first three month...s of this year, offenders gained access to unsecured property more than 60 per cent of the time. Make sure your home is secure by following these tips: - Lock your doors and windows even when you are at home. - Install sensor lights or security cameras. - Dont leave your keys or wallet near the front door. - Keep other valuables somewhere hard to find. - Never leave keys hidden outside your home. 10.01.2022 Opportunistic thefts & Break and Enters Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong April 2020 April 2020 has seen an increase in opportunistic thefts by offender...s in the Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong areas. Last night there were a number of reports of a group of unidentified persons trying car and house doors in Googong. There has also been two reported Break and Enters. During April we have had numerous reports of thefts from vehicles, garages and houses. On most occasions the offenders have gained access by unlocked doors or windows; or they have entered the house through unoccupied rooms/garages. During these thefts, car keys and key cards have also been stolen, which has led to further offences; such as vehicle theft and credit card frauds. The best thing you can do to prevent yourself becoming a victim is to lock your house, garage and car. Queanbeyan Police also have the following advice to help you secure your property (this list is not exhaustive): - Dont leave your vehicle keys (incl. spare keys), wallets and any valuable items near the front door or a window - Keep your car remote next to your bed. If you believe someone is breaking into your house activate the vehicle panic alarm and call 000 - Park your car inside the garage at night - Many thieves will enter the house through rooms that are clearly not occupied, eg. garages. Ensure these windows and doors are secured with strong locks and install a motion sensor alarm. - Restrict anyone being able to see in your garage by installing curtains and keeping them closed at night - Install good quality CCTV in conjunction with motion sensor flood lights - Look out for your neighbors Any information should not be provided via this post but directed to Queanbeyan Police on Ph: 02 62980599 or Crime Stoppers on Ph: 1800 333 000.
