23.01.2022 Happy #NAIDOC2020 (8-15 November 2020) This year’s theme is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be.’ It recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have occupied Australia for over 65,000 years. We are excited to celebrate this year’s @NAIDOC [tag NAIDOC] Week, albeit a little different to previous years due to COVID-19.

12.01.2022 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators and first artists; and this year’s National NAIDOC Week theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ celebrates and reiterates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander’s survival for over 65,000 years. In August, five asteroids were named in honour of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, communities and academics, including our very own award-winning artist and Meriam elder Mr Segar Passi a...nd Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Nakata from the James Cook University. In many ways, CIAF created a catalyst for change, by showing the vibrant complexities of Queensland’s First Peoples’ culture to the world via a virtual and deep listening experience. You can read about CIAF 2020 here, including their special mention of Torres Strait Regional Authority

01.01.2022 This #NAIDOCWeek we’re acknowledging two of Gab Titui Cultural Centre's acclaimed Torres Strait artists; Mr Ishmael ‘Abai’ Gibuma and Nazareth Fauid. Artist Profile Abai ‘Ishmael’ Gibuma Hailing from the Samu, Dhoeybaw, Baydham and Koedal clans, Abai (Ishmael) Gibuma is a fluent Kalaw Kawaw Ya language speaker who was born and raised on Boigu Island in the Top Western Cluster of the Torres Strait.... Abai is a seasonal crayfish diver and in between neap tides, he practices his love for carving and painting. Inspired by his ancestral connection to culture through stories, dancing and totems, Abai creates art pieces that preserve his culture and identity. See more of Abai’s collection: https://shop.gabtitui.gov.au/collections/all/ishmael-gibuma Artist Profile Nazareth Fauid Nazareth Fauid is from Poruma Island in the Kulkalgal Cluster of the Torres Strait. Nazareth is a budding beader and enjoys being able to create nothing into something. Seeing her creations come to life has inspired her to continue practising and nurturing her passion in the craft industry. She specialises in making earrings, necklaces and other jewellery. She is also currently developing her weaving techniques, working intensively to master this artistry. To compliment Nazareth’s diverse skillset is her ability to create dresses. Nazareth feels very passionate about being able to share her gift, skills and experience with her community. Nazareth’s jewellery is in store now!
