24.01.2022 'Suzy and Katherine Connolly' 1996 (detail) (mining the archive during Covid isolation). I love painting sisters, and especially these two childhood friends who I am still lucky to have in my life.
24.01.2022 "Moonrise with Banksia", 2015. Happy to find a photo of this little painting, included in "Ocean" curated by @mark.ogge and @selwynrodda in 2015. Inspired by Swan Bay but painted from sketches and memory. #gabriellemartin #swanbay #landscapepainting #australianart #womenartists #australiancontemporaryart #oilonboard #nocturne
24.01.2022 Portrait of my dear friend, Michel L'linares, probably 1995. Happy Birthday, Michel, and thinking of you in lockdown Paris. @michel.llinares
23.01.2022 'Olive Tree' 2019. I have just updated my website to include my recent show 'The Valley' at Gallerysmith Project Space, so if you wish to you can check it out at gabriellemartin.com.au (live link on my Insta page).
21.01.2022 Drawing dishes instead of washing them. #gabriellemartin #sketchbook #socialdistancing #notimeforstudio #athomewithkids
19.01.2022 Landscape with Pines More therapeutic drawing! I’m enjoying the quiet time with kids at home and walking with one friend at a time, but half an hours drawing on my own feels very privileged indeed.
19.01.2022 Last piece of personal: Greg, Teresa and me doing what we loved most. I think the mysterious megafauna on the wall might be horses.
18.01.2022 Clara My little girl - 13 today .
16.01.2022 Sometimes I think I’d be content spending my life just drawing what’s outside my window. I may never see the Mediterranean again but my olive tree makes me dream about it. ‘Olive Tree’ 2020.
16.01.2022 First preparatory sketch as I feel my way into a portrait of the author Martine Murray, who has just collaborated with Anna Read to create a wonderful children’s story called the ‘The Wanting Monster’. You can follow them and checkout this fantastic project @parachutepress. Very much a story for our times with powerful, original and beautiful illustrations. @whirlingbean @aluisaread #gabriellemartin #preparatorysketch #authormartinemurray #portraitsofwriters
15.01.2022 Studio 2020. Feeling pretty lucky to be getting in here a little at present with one child home schooling somewhat independently and special schools still open for my other one. I think I’d better make the most of this time! Thinking of all artists out there juggling complex situations and competing needs.
12.01.2022 I usually only draw Felix asleep because he doesn’t understand sit still, but with Covid lockdown I thought I’d see what I can capture of my moving teenage boy. #gabriellemartin #myboy #childrenwithdisabilities #teenager #portraitsofchildrenwithdisabilities #portraitsofteenagers #sketch #womenartists
11.01.2022 'Wild Plum Blossom', 2019. Happy to see this little painting go to a new home. Winter solstice has passed so it won't be long before I'm seeing blossom again on my walks. I think I'll be ready!
08.01.2022 Railway Embankment III, 2019. This small painting will be on sale at Bullarto Gallery Bushfire Benefit, opening this Saturday. It's a beautiful space, created by @phillip.edwards.artist and will be a great line up of artists. Come along at 2 this Saturday and enjoy the exhibition. The proceeds from each sale go to Wildlife Victoria and Australian Red Cross.
08.01.2022 It’s almost solstice and I’m so enchanted by the winter trees. Plum with Cypress Hedge.
07.01.2022 My mum in Norway, sitting among the heather. Early 60’s. I’m so glad she had this time of relative freedom, studying and travelling abroad before settling down to have 5 children. Two years since she died, but actually I rarely feel she’s gone at all.
06.01.2022 Felix Sleeping. Back to school tomorrow! It’s been 8 weeks with no carers or school for Felix and much longer since Clara started doing distance learning at home. It’s been intense but I’ve valued the quiet time with my family. Can’t wait to hold a paintbrush again though! Cheers to all other mothers, fathers and carers out there getting ready to expand your horizons again: well done for getting through!
03.01.2022 Olive, mulberry and lilac with cypress hedge.

01.01.2022 I love the elm trees in Malmsbury, especially in Autumn. Trying to imprint the incredible gold on my memory for the moment when I can get back in my studio (kids back to school).
01.01.2022 I’m eternally grateful for my studio, built by my partner Ian over the summer of 2009, which encompassed some of the hottest days on record in Victoria! Recently we made a gravel area where I intended to put a table and chairs to serve tea and cake to my sitters, but it’s been 100% colonised by wildflowers! Hard to resent these golden beauties, though- I think I’ll go with the rewilding instead. #studio #rewilding #everlastings #wildflowersofthegoldfields #malmsbury
01.01.2022 Landscape with Hawthorn and Poplars. So therapeutic getting to draw for half an hour amidst this social distancing and home schooling! #gabriellemartin #sketchbook #landscapedrawing #goldfieldslandscape #malmsbury
