22.01.2022 With one fifth of the Australian population speaking a language other than English, it’s vital that language appropriate information and resources to support those experiencing violence are readily available. That’s why our Gender and Disaster (GAD) Pod is launching newly translated versions of our ‘Disaster is No Excuse for Violence’ postcard, making this simple but important referral material available in 10 of the most prominent languages spoken across Australia. The ‘Disa...ster is No Excuse for Violence’ postcard has been designed to be distributed among relevant organisation and communities affected by natural disaster, and outlines an easy-to-remember four-step process for identifying incidents of family violence and accessing appropriate support services. For your copy of the postcards, which are now available in English, Greek, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Italian, Spanish, Swahili, Vietnamese, Chinese (simplified). Visit: www.genderanddisaster.com.au

19.01.2022 Our seventh activist for our #16Days #16Activists series is Debra Parkinson, Gender and Disaster Pod (GAD Pod) Manager and Research Fellow with Monash Universit...y Disaster Resilience Initiative. Since 2009, Debra’s research has focused on environmental justice and #gender and #disaster. In 2015, Deb was awarded the Social and Political Sciences Graduate Research Thesis Award from Monash University for her PhD on increased #domesticviolence after the Victorian Black Saturday bushfires. Over the past two decades, Debra’s research has included intimate partner violence, partner rape, women’s unequal access to the legal system, and gendered discrimination through the superannuation system. This work shines a light on the impacts of rigid gender roles in responding to disasters. During PreventX, Debra called for our community to stand up for women and children’s rights to live free from violence, including and especially after disasters. 01.01.2022 In this Lead-In Session for the Gender Justice in Disaster Conference, Dr Rob Gordon conveys the social and individual impacts of disasters on people across the world. Dr Rob Gordon is well known to disaster-affected communities across Australia. He is a clinical psychologist and trauma expert, and, for more than forty years from Ash Wednesday in 1983 to COVID-19 he has studied disaster’s effects and worked with individuals and communities in recovery. He notes that the loss of privacy that accompanies disasters can result in a loss of intimacy. He reflects on gender and the role this plays in disaster experience. He notes that ‘Gender stereotypes undermine our common humanity’. To Register: https://www.genderanddisaster.com.au//gender-justice-in-d/ Lead-In Session: https://youtu.be/CfT1E3OVb2Q
