11.01.2022 Have you got a productive mucous cough? Phlegm on your chest? Do your children have runny noses and chesty phlegm coughs? ........please keep away from bananas at this time and reach for a ‘phlegm reducing and eliminating PEAR’ instead. Pears are an excellent source of vitamins such as C and K, and they hold nutrients and minerals along with cooling properties, healing many ailments including coughs and colds .... Pears, due to their sour properties, help to eliminate phlegm. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, when the lungs become dry, the pear is a cooling food and it helps moisten the lungs and prevent bacteria. Poached warm pears are an even better option in this cooler weather. Whilst the banana in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is considered a mucous/phlegm forming food which can produce excess mucous, therefore please avoid eating bananas if you are suffering from a cold, cough or hayfever to help reduce mucous and phlegm production. If you or your children are suffering with cold or flu symptoms or have mucous or phlegm producing symptoms such as coughs, Chinese Medicine can help provide relief and shorten the length of time you take to recover, please call me if you require further information. 09.01.2022 IMPROVE YOUR DIGESTION WITH APPLE CIDER VINEGAR! .....but it is important to use raw organic apple cider vinegar, which has the ‘mother’ of the vinegar. The ‘mother’ is the cloudy strings of naturally occurring pectin and proteins that form during fermentation. Filtered and pasteurized vinegars will not have this and therefore they will lack enzymes and other nutritional properties that have such a positive effect on the digestive process. Raw apple cider vinegar contains v...aluable minerals and trace elements, acetic acid, anti-viral malic acid, live enzymes, amino acids and many other beneficial nutrients. To Improve Your Digestion 1 tablespoon of ACV in a large glass of water (room temperature or warm water) 15 minutes before your meal will help to stimulate your digestive juices for better breakdown and assimilation of your food. Yes it does taste a little sour, but that’s a good thing. It’s important to train your taste buds to not expect everything to be sweet. If you really can’t handle it at the start, then try it with a drop of natural stevia, but using sugar or commercial honey to sweeten it will only feed the intestinal problems that ACV is used to treat. IMPORTANT - be sure to always dilute ACV in water before drinking, because it is acidic and can damage tooth enamel, ie dose of 1 tablespoon per 1 large glass of water. 03.01.2022 A MUST Winter Breakfast, especially if you or any of your family are suffering from cold and flu symptoms with excess mucous production and no appetite. Oatmeal with Apple and Pear, raw honey, almonds and coconut oil! (this recipe serves 2) 1/3 cup oats cooked with 2/3 cup water over low heat for about 10 minutes... 1 x apple, quartered, cored and sliced 1 x pear, quartered, cored and sliced half a mandarin, segmented and cut the inside membrane out to scoop out the pips 1 x star anise peel of half a mandarin, thinly sliced pinch nutmeg and cinnamon (only use if no heat signs as these are very warming in nature) dash of vanilla 1 x tsp palm sugar or similar organic non-refined sugar 10 x almonds, soaked overnight in cold water then sliced 1 x tsp organic raw honey 1 x tsp coconut oil 1. In a saucepan, combine apple, pear, mandarin peel, sugar, vanilla, spices with a dash of water and cook over low heat for approx 10 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the fruit has softened. In the last 5 minutes add the mandarin segments. At the end stir in the sliced soaked almonds. This will be enough compote for 2 serves. 2. Once your oatmeal and compote has cooked, place the oatmeal in a bowl, spoon on the coconut oil and honey so it starts to melt in. Spoon over the compote and add a dash of soy or other non dairy milk. Health benefits of this great porridge recipe according to Chinese Medicine: Oats are easily digested and therefore great for the digestive centre of the body and warming during the cold weather. Apples are medicinal in that they are excellent for indigestion (better in this cold weather if they are cooked/stewed) and they also help to moisten dryness and dry lungs. Pears directly affect the lungs-which in Chinese Medicine are responsible for our immunity and they help to stop coughs. Pears also help eliminate excess mucous and are great for moistening dryness ie dry throats and croaky voices. Mandarin peel ‘harmonises’ the digestive centre and drys ‘damp’ which is phlegm so helps in resolving phlegm coughs. Almonds are good for ‘productive coughs’ (ie mucous). Soaking the almonds makes them more digestible and enhances their nutritional value. Star Anise has some detox qualities and in this instance in Chinese Medicine we call it ‘expelling the pathogen!’ Cinnamon is very warming, therefore should only be used if experiencing chills or have an aversion to cold. Nutmeg also very warming so again should not be used if there are any heat signs but it is very nurturing to the digestive centre and great for helping to alleviate diarrhoea and nausea. Coconut oil has anti-viral and anti-bacterial qualities. Non dairy milk dairy is what we call in Chinese Medicine ‘damp forming’ (ie think mucous producing) therefore you don’t want to add anything that is more mucous forming so non-dairy substitutes such as rice nut or soy milks or none at all! Enjoy! Gail Kirner Enta Chinese Medicine Practitioner See more

01.01.2022 Kick start your day and your metabolism with lemon water! When you wake up first thing in the morning take up the good habit of having a cup of warm lemon water, it cleanses the digestive system and gets your metabolism ‘firing on all cylinders!’. The water should be warm so that it’s not a shock to your system, you can also add in a bit of organic, raw honey to sweeten up the sour lemon and introduce digestive enzymes and antioxidants to the equation. Lemons also: Balance pH... Levels - they are one of the most alkalizing foods for the body. Sure, they are acidic on their own, but inside our bodies they’re alkaline (the citric acid does not create acidity in the body once metabolized). Lemons contain both citric and ascorbic acid, weak acids easily metabolized from the body allowing the mineral content of lemons to help alkalize the blood. Disease states only occur when the body pH is acidic. Drinking lemon water regularly can help to remove overall acidity in the body, including uric acid in the joints, which is one of the primary causes of pain and inflammation. Freshen Our Breath - besides fresher breath, lemons have been known to help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis. But just be aware - that citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so you should be mindful of this. The best thing to do is just rinse your mouth with filtered or boiled water after your lemon water, it’s as easy as that. Gail Kirner Enta Acupuncturist
