25.01.2022 Today 199 years ago on St Patrick’s Day .... Adam & John Amos, of Glen Gala and Cranbrook respectively and their families to whose memory the tablet was erected, landed in Hobart Town on March 17th 1821, from a voyage of six months from London. The Emerald was the first ship under private charter direct from England to Van Diemen’s Land. (The Mercury- Tuesday 22nd March 1921)

10.01.2022 Another Monday afternoon last week spent transcribing & plotting the graves with Pat Greenhill. Here is a Coles Bay connection, the grave of Jane Cole (nee Martin) a free settler & wife of Silas Cole, after who Coles Bay was named. They had 10 children. Silas Cole was transported in 1842 as a convict to VDL. In 1848 he received his ticket of leave & about this time he worked as a farm hand in the Cranbrook area and also a shepherd for Capt. Robert Hepburn at Sherborne. Si...las supplemented his income by burning oyster shells taken from middens behind Richardson’s beach (Coles Bay) in his kiln. The lime was then shipped across Great Oyster Bay to Swansea & used for mortar in the buildings. Silas Cole died at Derwent River Farm, Sandy Bay two years after Jane in 1899. See more
