23.01.2022 A great look back to the humble beginnings of our beloved breed
22.01.2022 So how can you ensure that this summer is going to be 'flea free'? Firstly, get rid of that flea collar many of them contain organophosphates, carbamates an...d organochlorines. These powerful poisons can cause salivation, vomiting, convulsions, tremors and cancer. I have reservations about herbal collars too. The animal's sense of smell is so acute that anything with an odour hung around its neck so close to its nose must be quite distressing. Change the diet get some real food! Fresh raw meat and cooked vegetables, herbs (if you have dandelion leaves, couch, chickweed, puha, fathen or cleavers growing in your yard, chop them finely and add to the meal), garlic (a small clove daily for the average dog), a pinch of nutritional yeast, a dash of organic apple cider vinegar and fresh fruit. There is a useful product called Flee Flea which can be added to your pet's diet, and pets on Essential Fatty Acids (omega 3, 6, 9’s) have shown an improved ability to withstand flea problems. Throw out the chemical washes slice a lemon and include it with the peel in two litres of near-boiling water. Steep overnight, then add a drop of eucalyptus oil to the brew and sponge onto your pet, allowing it to dry. Make your own flea powder with some finely chopped eucalyptus, rosemary, fennel, yellow dock leaves, wormwood, and rue place all in the kitchen whizz and blend into a powder then rub into your pet's coat sparingly. Concentrate on problem areas at the base of the tail, neck and belly. Invest in a flea comb. I have a cup of very hot water nearby when de-fleaing my dog - I dip the comb in it after running it through my dog’s coat I’m not quick enough to catch many of the hopping fleas but this fixes the problem as the fleas will stay in the hair and comb. Wipe the comb with a paper towel after dipping it to remove the hair in the comb (and the fleas!). Wash the animal's bedding with eucalyptus wool mix. (This is available in the supermarket ). Hang out to dry on hot sunny days (heat kills fleas and their eggs). Apply some Diatomaceous Earth to outside grassy areas where your pet like to lie (this dries up the fleas). If their favourite sleeping spot is a bare dirt patch, cover it occasionally on hot sunny days with black polythene. Keep your lawn short so that the sunlight can penetrate to the flea eggs. Inside your home - arrange some small leafy branches of eucalyptus trees behind your TV and sofa and under your beds. Use eucalyptus oil in your incense burner and in an atomiser to spray in those 'hard-to-reach' places. Steam cleaning your carpet is an effective way of killing flea eggs if you have a severe infestation. Place a few drops of eucalyptus in your vac bag before vacuuming to catch the live fleas. Every client who has made some meaningful changes to their pet's diet and opted for non-chemical flea, worm, and vaccination control, has noticed their pets no longer have a major problem with fleas, even if there are still the odd ones around.

21.01.2022 We hope that everyone has had an opportunity to enjoy the lovely weather over the last few weeks. Some brachycephalic dogs may have found the warm weather parti...cularly challenging, however. Unlike us, dogs do not have sweat glands to help them stay cool. Instead, they control their body temperature via mainly panting rapid, shallow breathing which increases the evaporation of water from the airways and nose cavity. More effort goes into panting than normal breathing, and this in itself generates further heat. Although overheating can be a potential problem for all dogs, regardless of their breed and conformation, brachycephalic dogs are particularly susceptible to heat stress. This is because dogs with upper airway obstruction have compromised movement of air into and out of the lungs and even more effort is required to open the airway. As a consequence, the additional heat load cannot be dissipated effectively. In hot weather, a vicious circle of increased body temperature in spite of panting often results in brachycephalic dogs. Some brachycephalic dogs suffer from heat intolerance even without obvious BOAS signs. Therefore, for ALL brachycephalic dogs, we recommend the following: - Only walk your dog early in the morning or after dusk and keep walks short. - Do not let your dog lie in hot parts of the house when they are confined. - Provide sufficient water to keep them well hydrated. - Use cooling jackets/mats or a paddling pool to keep your dog cool. For brachycephalic dogs who are diagnosed with BOAS, airway surgery may be advised prior to the summer season. #BOAS #overheating #CambridgeBOASResearchGroup #QVSH #CambridgeVetSchool #Pug #FrenchBulldog #Bulldog

20.01.2022 Article by Penny Rankine-Parsons: ''The recent trend of breeding Merle French Bulldogs is deeply disturbing to anyone who cares about the breed. While French Bulldogs can come in many colors and patterns, the gene for Merle patterning is the one that is not found in purebred French Bulldogs. Breeders produce so called Merle French Bulldogs by cross breeding a French Bulldog to a dog of a breed that carries Merle likely Chihuahuas. The resulting offspring are screened and ...selected for the merle dogs that also look most like purebred French Bulldogs. These dogs are then crossed together, and the puppies are then sold to the unsuspecting public as purebred Merle French Bulldogs. These cross bred dogs carry a very high price tag much higher than the best bred French Bulldog from health tested, well bred litters. Worse than the scam being perpetrated on the public is the fact that Merles equal misery in far too many cases. Profit making breeders eager to produce high priced exotic merles won’t hesitate to breed two merles together a process referred to as merle to merle breeding. Crossing merle to merle has serious, well documented health risks deafness, blindness, Microphthalmia (small, deformed or even missing eyes) and even a condition referred to as lethal white which can result in abnormally high deaths in utero. Ask yourself what kind of person would risk this suffering in tiny French Bulldog puppies, just to get a higher price on the pups who do survive? What do you imagine happens to all of the abnormal, deaf, blind or disfigured puppies that are a by product of producing a handful of Merle French Bulldog puppies healthy enough to offered for sale? If a breeder is ignoring even the chances of producing blind, deaf or deformed French Bulldogs by breeding for Merle French Bulldogs, what are the chances they care at all about any other health testing? For every one healthy merle French Bulldog puppy you see, how many Misery Merles had to suffer, or even die? How high of a price are you willing to ask these puppies to pay, just so that you can own a fad color? This picture shows a puppy born with a missing eye.''

13.01.2022 Genetics of a ‘Blue’ French Bulldog: A blue coat is due to a recessive gene called the ‘Dilution Gene’ This rare gene is viewed as undesirable in French Bulldo...gs. If a Frenchie has 2 copies of this gene then the coat will appear blue. Unfortunately for Blue French Bulldogs , they can suffer from a genetic condition known as ‘ Colour Dilution Alopecia’ (CDA) It is a recessive and inherited gene and is the result of a faulty version of the dilution gene. FBRSA is receiving more and more calls from people looking for Blue Frenchies. We strongly encourage people to never select a dog for the colour of their eyes and coat over their health and wellbeing. Frenchies already have more than their fair share of health problems!

12.01.2022 PATELLA LUXATION The red circles show the knee joints of a fully grown but not yet born puppy. As can be clearly seen here, there is a lot of space between the knee and other joints. The intervening spaces consist of cartilage and it takes 2 years for the cartilage to ossify (the cartilage is replaced by bone). If you start feeling the patella at a young age, it will ALWAYS luxate because cartilage is flexible. (Feel how flexible it is on your nose or ear) If a vet starts to... feel the patella too early, he can manually luxate the patella. A diagnosis of Patella Luxation is often given at a young age because there is still flexibility in the joints. It also regularly happens that owners do not take sufficient account of flexibility and go for a walk when purchasing, while this is extremely bad for the dog. A 10-week-old puppy is allowed to walk for 10 minutes (5 back and forth) to prevent deformities from forming. Another factor is that running after a ball, climbing stairs, jumping on or off the couch, jerks at the end of the line, short, fast turns on the axis and the dog's character can all cause Patella Luxation. When you buy a puppy you have to take this into account. Even if both parents are tested and free of Patella Luxation, the puppy can still get it due to improper upbringing or a veterinarian who manually luxates the patella. The advice for surgery is often given, but can be prevented 9 out of 10 times by giving your dog the right education. Training your dog to walk next to you, to run loose, to walk straight stretches, swimming are all things that promote muscle. In addition, you can also give BCAA (a supplement) that stimulates muscle building. The musculature ensures that the patella stays in place. See more

08.01.2022 It's always fun to cure hip dysplasia with correct positioning! Today Dr. Jeffrey S Cohen Veterinarian saw yet another second opinion for hip dysplasia. (Read h...ere www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1916 ) Despite no historical, physical or clinical findings compatible with hip dysplasia, this 10 month old Golden Retriever was diagnosed elsewhere with this congenital disease and was told the dog needed surgery based on the very poorly positioned radiograph(xray) on the left.

05.01.2022 Yes! Dogs are omnivores. Amongst a species-appropriate and fresh diet, they will require veggies. All veggies and fruits we consume are safe for dogs except o...nions and grapes. Avocados can be a gut irritant so be careful if you’re sharing your Avo on toast! Mushrooms are also highly beneficial, all mushrooms that are for human consumption are safe for dogs. Shiitake mushrooms are considered Qi tonifying, so great for nourishing and boosting energy, gut health as well as general immunity. Preparing veggies - steaming or blitzing them up raw are both viable options to make them digestible for the canine gut. I prefer blitzing them up in a blender, then serve fresh or freeze them as ice cubes . Carrots and corn are close to impossible to digest if they are fed whole, or even chopped up. Carrots are good fun for chewing, and seeing chunks of carrots in their stools isn’t an uncommon sight!
