25.01.2022 BACK HOME: And as you know for the live updates, Salty Dog is back home. We returned! Many thanks to Val and Vanessa for their diligence, patience with challenges and the fun, adventures and good sailing we shared. Ern

22.01.2022 PHILLIP ISLAND TRIP - MAY 2017 You can see how rough the Heads were when we sailed back through into the bay.

21.01.2022 PHILLIP ISLAND SAIL - MAY 2017 We had some trouble at dusk finding the mooring float in the sheltered channel near Phillip Island. But we found it in the end, after also making an attempt to tie up at the Cowes pier. The waters are very tidal, so we decided it was too treacherous to attempt tying up at the pier. The tide was moving fast and the pier was standing still. The sunset was magic.

20.01.2022 Good winds, sunny day.

16.01.2022 PHILLIP ISLAND SAIL - MAY 2017 I was delighted my 87 year old father was able to join us for the trip. He took his turn at the wheel and fitted in very well. Dad (who is still farming) said it was a bit like lining up the tractor with a point on the fence, so you plough in a straight line...

16.01.2022 SAILING HOME: We had good winds on our way home from Portarlington to Brighton. Salty's autopilot manages a lot of the trip for us, including the sizeable swells.

15.01.2022 Sun glistening on the water as we sail along at good pace on a broad reach.

13.01.2022 DOLPHINS! The wind has dropped during our sail back along the coast. Our discouragement at our loss of pace was quickly buoyed when we were surrounded by dolphins. This is an unedited video, so you get to also listen to decisions about stopping for the night or continuing. The amazing sunset we enjoyed where we were anchored helped us to feel good about our decision.

12.01.2022 PHILLIP ISLAND SAIL - MAY 2017 We double reefed the sails (made them smaller) on the way back, as the winds were climbing to 25 - 30 knots (about 55kph). As we were now also sailing at 30% off a head wind, we copped a fair amount of spray. We eventually pulled the sails down as we drew near the Heads and motored to Portarlington (with a headwind up the Western Channel). It was then easy sailing home next day.

12.01.2022 Waters are a nice blue in Port Phillip Bay at we round the Western Channel to head for Portarlington for the night.

10.01.2022 SUNSET AT PHILLIP ISLAND As you know, given the wind drop, we anchored in a protected bay around from Seal Rock at Phillip Island. This was our sunset.

09.01.2022 Sailing as the sun sets across Bass Straight.

06.01.2022 Salty Dog is back in his home. We have returned! Many thanks to Val and Vanessa for their diligence, patience with challenges and the fun, adventures and good sailing we shared. Ern

05.01.2022 PHILLIP ISLAND SAIL - MAY 2017 We had very good winds that allowed us to sail on a broad reach almost all the way to Phillip Island. There is Ed on the helm. We sailed through the Heads on even tide, past Cape Schank and then to Phillip Island to stay for the night.

04.01.2022 Thanks Val for sending through these videos. This video is a nice reminder of how BLUE our Great Southern Ocean can be. Stirs me up to want to go back.... You can also see that Silly Ted has had a rough night the night before and is still recovering.

03.01.2022 PHILLIP ISLAND SAIL - MAY 2017 Ed Thexton, Vanessa, my father and I sailed down to Phillip Island from Brighton in May, 2018. Here are a few photos of this trip, including sunrise at Portarlington.

03.01.2022 Tour for the photographers!

02.01.2022 LAST SUPPER: As Vanessa mentioned in her live updates, the chef at the pier restaurant treated us to a banquet on our final evening away at Portarlington. He served us a dish each of mussels (from local mussel farm), the best seafood marinara I have ever tasted, and a calamari dish, all for the price of a main meal each.
