15.01.2022 From simple soldiers to exalted poets, over the years the grief and tragedy of war has been expressed in poetry, art and song. Some of these very personal recollections, like their creators, slip quietly into history. Others remain with us to evoke the sense of dignity, respect and remembrance we most associate with Anzac Day. 'For the Fallen' was written by British Museum worker Laurence Binyon. First published in 1914, the last verse is read at Anzac Day commemorations everywhere.

15.01.2022 There's lots of accounts of rapport between ANZAC soldiers and Turks. It's a fact mixing took place. The two sides sometimes even exchanged token gifts. But with war come prisoners, regardless of human spirit on the field. In his memoir, Five Months at Anzac, Joseph Lievesley Beetson recalls: We saw a good many Turkish prisoners at one time or another, and invariably fraternised with them. They were kept inside a barbed-wire enclosure with a guard over them; but there was n...o need to prevent their escapethey would not leave if they got the chance. On one occasion twelve of them were told to go some distance into the scrub and bring in some firewood. No one was sent with them, the idea being to encourage them to go to their lines and persuade some of the Turks to desert to us. But they were like the cat; they all came backwith the firewood. #anzac100 #gallipolicruise http://gallipoli-2015.com.au See more

13.01.2022 The Avenue of Remembrance tapestry is inspired by the 'Gallipoli Letter' written by Keith Murdoch, then a reporter with the Sydney Sun and Melbourne Herald. Keith had been posted to London and, during a stopover in Cairo, managed to get permission to go to Gallipoli. There he found things were not as rosy as were being portrayed in the media. Murdoch met another reporter, Ashmead-Bartlett, at the Island of Lemnos who was critical of Ian Hamilton and other British generals. H...e gave Keith a letter to take to London, hoping he could avoid censorship and deliver it directly to the British Prime Minister. Sadly, the letter was confiscated on the way. However, based on memory and what he personally had seen and heard, Murdoch wrote his own letter to the Australian Prime Minister, Andrew Fisher. That letter did find its way to the British Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith. The dramatic events that resulted include the sacking of General Ian Hamilton as Allied Forces Commander and eventual withdrawal of ANZAC troops (by 20 December 1915), putting an end to the campaign. A copy of Ashmead-Bartlett’s original letter can be viewed online at: http://www.anzacsite.gov.au/1landing/letter.html #anzac100 #gallipolicruise http://gallipoli-2015.com.au See more

01.01.2022 A scarcity of fresh water at Gallipoli meant ANZACs were rationed to just over 2 litres daily. Mostly they brewed this into tea ... then used the leftovers for shaving. #anzac100 #gallipolicruise http://gallipoli-2015.com.au
