25.01.2022 The uncertainty and stress of these changing times can take a toll on your mental and emotional wellbeing. You might be feeling flat or low during this time. That is a completely normal response," says Dr Sarah Hampton, GMRF Research Officer and Clinical Psychologist. Compassionate behaviours, such as the giving and receiving of kindness and care, have been shown to stimulate feelings of warmth, calmness and contentment, which help regulate emotions such as fear, anxiety..., anger, stress and shame, Dr Hampton says. You can read more about this on page 76 in Edition 2 of RSL Queensland News Magazine - https://rslqld.org/News/Queensland-RSL-News

25.01.2022 You could have a conversation today that could change someone's life. Be part of R U OK Day, and take the time to ask someone how they're going. It's been a challenging year for so many of us, and staying connected is as important as ever. Remember, there's more to say after R U OK! Asking someone how they're going is the first step, but it's important to keep the conversation going. If someone tells you they're struggling, listen with an open mind and encourage them to take ...action and seek professional help. Checking in and following up on a conversation is a great way to show someone who is having a tough time that you care. If you have an R U OK? conversation today, pop a reminder in your calendar to follow up in a few weeks. Your actions and genuine care can be life-changing. #RUOKDay #theresmoretosay #RUOK

23.01.2022 Veterans who leave full-time service may feel a loss of purpose as they adjust to civilian life. As highlighted in a literature review published by our Veteran Mental Health Initiative last year, many veterans felt that they were no longer contributing to something as important as the collective effort of military service, leading to feeling a loss of purpose. In partnership with RSL Queensland, our Veteran Mental Health Initiative is working to address this and other challen...ges veterans may face as they transition from the military. 16.01.2022 We've never been about research for the sake of it - we're all about research that changes lives now and into the future. This sentiment is summed up by Dr Sarah Hampton as she discusses her work in our Veteran Health Initiative. "I believe research must have real-world application, otherwise why bother? I feel so grateful to work at GMRF. It offers me the rare opportunity to combine my passion for clinical work with meaningful and relevant research. 15.01.2022 As the problem of fatty liver disease continues to rise, our Liver Research Unit is working hard to address it for the one in four adult Australians affected. 15 years ago no one had any idea how big liver disease would be. Our donors should be very proud of how theyre helping build the knowledge that leads to better treatments," GMRF liver disease researcher, Dr Kim Bridle says. You can find out more about this innovative research and support researchers like Kim at: https://www.gallipoliresearch.com.au/resear/liver-research/

15.01.2022 We recently asked Liver Research PhD student, Ritu, what her proudest achievement was in her three year project as she nears completion. This is what she said: "I am proudest of the new understanding my findings have provided. I was able to identify the relationship between major aspects of cancer development and drug resistance. Now I can target these aspects and test a combination of new and existing drugs. I am happy that I could find something really important and novel. ...It is very satisfying. I am so grateful and thankful to the donors and to GMRF for this opportunity. This research would not have been possible without the support of both." Our CTU team is with patients every step of the way. It's great to hear what this support means for patients, as Howard recently told us: "The initial participation in the trial was quite daunting as with any new and untested experience. A big shout out to Petra, who has already raised almost $900 for our research! She says: "I am hoping I can walk five kilometres for every person who donates to me. Depending on the number it could take me the whole month of five kilometres a day or maybe longer, but that is my plan! "As I walk the journey I ...hold close in my heart all the people I have companioned as they walked their own story as a return service person. Research does and will make a difference, that's why I am walking. Thank you for your support!" Well done Petra! 09.01.2022 Stress and worry are natural responses to threat and uncertainty amid the coronavirus pandemic. These strong emotions can understandably result in difficulty sleeping or insomnia. Insomnia is the experience of difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, even when you have the chance to do so. It can be very distressing and impact our day-to-day functioning. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia (also called CBTi) is recommended as the most effective way to treat insomn...ia. Watch this helpful video developed by Veterans MATES for an informative look at the kinds of strategies involved in CBTi therapy. https://youtu.be/PH2KE5rBJEE At GMRF, we are offering veterans experiencing insomnia and nightmares the chance to participate in a free group CBTi program commencing in October 2020 as part of the Veteran Sleep Therapy Study. 08.01.2022 Why is it so important to address the issue of sleep problems for veterans? As Research Officer and Psychologist Kelly Brown knows, sleep problems may not occur in isolation. "Sleep and mental health are closely connected. For veterans with PTSD, sleep deprivation can exacerbate symptoms and reduce their ability to cope during the day." "Sleep is a key pillar of overall health and wellbeing. Not getting enough sleep, or having consistently poor quality sleep, can impact many ...areas of your life and day-to-day functioning." Find out more about how we are investigating sleep at http://bit.ly/GMRF-VSTS

06.01.2022 Given everything that's happened in 2020, the importance of social connection has been in the spotlight. It's an area we're working on in as part of our transition and reintegration research, conducted in partnership with @RSL Queensland. As a veteran told us as part of this research: "There's some great Ex Service Organisations out there that are part of our shared experience. They understand what you've been through. It's a good way to connect people, but you need to balanc...e that with non veteran organisations and social that can give you that connection to civilian life." 06.01.2022 We’re thrilled at the announcement of Greenslopes Private Hospital’s new Jean Pockett Wing. 06.01.2022 Excellent work by our Senior Clinical Trials Coordinator (Oncology), Rachel Wong, for her presentation at the Clinical Trial Workshop at the Brisbane Cancer Conference yesterday. Rachel presented on our Clinical Trial Unit's progress, and its innovative response to ensuring trials continued during the coronavirus pandemic. She says: "It was great to see researchers, clinicians and trial sites from across the state come together to discuss what we learned over the past few mon...ths. "Knowledge sharing events like this are so important and help clinical trials units prepare and adapt through the challenges of the pandemic. Hopefully we won't have another situation like we've had, but by working together and learning from each other we'll be ready!" #cancerresearch #clinicaltrials #collaboration

06.01.2022 Lucas Trevisan Franca de Lima may have only just commenced his PhD in our Liver Research Unit, but he is already producing promising early findings in his project. In his pilot study he found that the biomarkers (signatures) in the blood used for diagnosing liver fibrosis also showed in a patient's saliva. It means there is potential to use a saliva test to help identify patients with liver scarring. As Lucas explains: "A simple saliva test could become an important screening... tool which could help prevent patients from developing liver cancer. Using saliva as an alternative biological sample for clinical analysis presents the advantage of being a painless, non-invasive procedure that can be repeated over time." Lucas is now working to validate these findings in a larger test group. Read more about our liver research at: https://www.gallipoliresearch.com.au/resear/liver-research/

05.01.2022 Our Liver Research Unit is a small team punching above its weight, but they're not in the fight alone. When it comes to medical research, collaboration is vital. As our Director of Research Professor Darrell Crawford says: Liver cancer must be on the national agenda. Were making progress in research, but its not as... quick as what weve seen with other cancers. This could be the defining illness of our children and grandchildrens lives if we dont ramp up our efforts now.
