20.01.2022 The Estimates of the 2019 deer harvest in Victoria shows that there were 5,190 licensed hound hunters in Victoria last year. It is estimated that about 46 per cent (2,361) of hound hunters actively hunted during 2019, and that an average of 10.5 deer were harvested per active hunter. About 57% of the deer harvested by hound hunters in 2019 were female. In 2018, the research approach was revised to improve the accuracy of estimating the harvest of Sambar Deer with hounds. ... The report shows an increase in both the number of licensed hound hunters and deer harvested from the previous survey. 15.01.2022 The Estimates of the 2019 deer harvest in Victoria shows that more female deer were harvested in 2019 than male deer. Of the 131,258 Sambar Deer harvested, 60 per cent were female and 40 per cent were male. Of the 30,307 Fallow Deer harvested, 62 per cent were female and 38 per cent were male. ... This suggests that hunters are targeting deer more for meat than for antlers. Having a sex bias towards harvesting female deer could also potentially contribute to deer population control in some areas. Hunters are encouraged do their bit for conservation and deer management and continue to target hinds and does. 06.01.2022 Some of our followers have asked about the collation of data in the recently published ‘Estimates of the 2019 deer harvest in Victoria’ report. The estimated number of average deer harvested per hunter is calculated per active hunter. This means that there was an average of 6.8 deer harvested in 2019 by hunters who actually hunted. Not everyone who was surveyed hunted throughout the year. Of the 41,985 licensed deer hunters, 60% (approx. 25,400) actually hunted in 2019. The ...remainder did not. Hunters who were surveyed that did not actively hunt were not included in calculating the average deer harvested. A total of 2,400 licensed deer hunters were randomly surveyed throughout the year. Surveys were conducted every two months. Participants were selected randomly for each survey event, which means that some people may have been asked to participate multiple times or not at all. For a summary of the findings, see the media release at: https://bit.ly/2JWmYJ7 or view the full report at: https://bit.ly/3llzaRg We will continue to answer your questions on sustainability and responsibility in game hunting in our posts. We will only respond to questions in our posts that relate to the GMA’s remit. For urgent questions please contact the Customer Contact Centre on 136 186. (Photo by Reg Gordon)
