21.01.2022 Here is the question of the day. Oxidation Numbers are the numbers that help chemists to know how many electrons are there in an element when it is involved in the formation of a chemical species (neutral molecules or ions). There are some rules to determine the oxidation number of an element in a species. RULE-1: In pure elemental form an atom has zero oxidation number. RULE-2: For an ion, the ionic charge is the oxidation number of that ion.... RULE-3: For Group 1 alkali metals the oxidation number is +1 and for Group 2 alkaline earth metal the oxidation number is +2. RULE-4: Hydrogen has oxidation number +1 when forming hydride with nonmetals and has oxidation Number -1 in case of hydride of Group 1 and Group 2 metals. RULE-5: Oxygen has four oxidation numbers. For normal oxide it has -2, for peroxide -1, for superoxide and with fluorine it has only +2 oxidation number. RULE-6: Fluorine has only oxidation number -1 in its all compounds. RULE-7: The other halogen atoms (i.e. Cl, Br and I) have oxidation number -1 except when forming compound with oxygen and fluorine atom (in this case they show oxidation state +1). RULE-8: The sum of the oxidation numbers of individual elements in a neutral molecule is zero. RULE-9: The sum of the oxidation numbers of individual elements in an ion is equal to the charge of that ion. See more
