22.01.2022 Vaino Keskula started with the Annangrove Bush Fire Brigade in 1991 and has just been recognised with his Long Service Medal for 29 years. Making a fresh start ...in Cooma in 2009, he transferred to the local brigade as a way of getting involved in the community. There’s no better way to get to know people when you move somewhere new, than joining the local volunteer fire brigade, he said. Vaino is also a member of the local Lions Club and plays saxophone in the Cooma District Band. Vaino has seen plenty of action across the Greater Sydney area since he joined the Service - 1991 at Kenthurst, 1997 in the Blue Mountains and last year’s devastating fires. Last season was a very intense time with many of our brigade on strike teams up north and then down south. It was a long and tragic summer, he said. Despite it all, Vaino values the trust and camaraderie that comes with his brigade. You meet some really nice people. It’s not just the firefighting there’s plenty of other things to get involved with, particularly if you are new to an area. Joining the fire brigade is a really great way to meet like-minded people, build trust and feel like part of the community, he said. Very High fire danger i...s forecast for many areas of NSW including the Riverina, Central Ranges and Greater Sydney. Know what you and your family will do if fire threatens and report all new unattended fires immediately to Triple Zero (000). See more

15.01.2022 A woman who died while canyoning in the Blue Mountains has been identified as a serving NSW Police officer. Senior Constable Kelly Foster, aged 39, died followi...ng a canyoning incident at Mount Wilson yesterday (Saturday 2 January 2021). Snr Cst Foster attested on 27 August 2010, after which she commenced duties as a probationary constable at Newtown Local Area Command. She was confirmed as a constable in May 2012. In May 2014, Snr Cst Foster joined the State Crime Command working as an intel analyst until May 2020. She was most recently working at Chifley Police District, stationed at Lithgow Police Station. NSW Police Acting Commissioner Mal Lanyon has extended his condolences to the Foster family on behalf of the NSW Police Force. It’s a very sad time for the NSW Police Force and Kelly’s death is a loss to the whole community, Acting Commissioner Lanyon said. To hear reports that Kelly was trying to help another woman when she died demonstrates her commitment to the community she served and the ability to put the needs of others before her own. Kelly was a highly regarded and dedicated officer who will be sorely missed by colleagues across the force. Her policing career was put on hold when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, however, her strength to survive this and return to work is another testament to her strength and resilience. Above all, Kelly was a kind and loving daughter, sister and partner. Snr Cst Foster’s family have requested privacy at this time.

10.01.2022 Today marks the official end to the quietest fire season in more than a decade, a welcome and stark contrast to last year. This season, NSW RFS members have res...ponded to just over 5,500 bush and grass fires that have burnt 30,963 hectares across NSW, considerably less than the 11,400 fires and 5.5 million hectares lost last season. Thank you to our incredible members who continuously step up to help when called upon, protecting communities across the state

09.01.2022 Up to 1,600 people are currently isolated by floodwater in the Mid North Coast of the state including areas around Wingdam, Harrington, Camden Haven and Taree, ...however no evacuations have occurred. Thanks to our friends at the NSW Rural Fire Service for supporting our work on the Mid North Coast, helping replenish supplies and relocate people who had become stranded due to flooding near Wingham and Kempsey. Our work is continuing in the region, with NSW RFS on standby for continued assistance. There have been over 770 requests for assistance to NSW SES since Saturday morning, relating to the current weather event. The majority of requests relate to water inundation to properties as well as trees and branches falling. For emergency help in floods and storms, call the NSW SES on 132500. In life-threatening situations, call triple Zero (000).

06.01.2022 Despite the wet weather, we have so far this fire season seen just over 4000 fires, 26,810 hectares burnt and one home lost. Most of these fires have been in cr...op, grass and stubble. For the same period last fire season there had been more than 9500 fires, over 1000 homes lost and 3.76 million hectares burnt. With still three months left of this fire season it’s important not to become complacent. Remain prepared, maintain your property and most importantly have a plan and know what you will do if threatened by fire. See more

02.01.2022 The Lions Club of Stroud, with the assistance of local businesses, raised funds for local projects with the sale of their Christmas mini-cakes. For every mini-c...ake sold in the month of October, a cake was generously donated for local NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW SES brigades to enjoy. The local community showed their support by buying lots of cakes, and local brigades were presented with their donated cakes as part of the Community Christmas on Cowper celebrations on Friday 11 December. Thank you to Lions Club of Stroud and the community for their support. Gloucester Advocate, Lions Clubs International
