Yields are a meager 0.3 to 0.5 tons of fruit per acre. In combination with a near ideal growing season, this has resulted in a great edition of Mount Edelstone, one of South Australia's iconic wines. Purple-colored, the nose gives up notes of mocha, chocolate, smoked meat, pepper, leather, blueberry, and black...berry. Elegant, already complex, layered, and thoroughly satisfying, this superb Shiraz has enough baby fat to be enjoyed now but will amply reward 5-7 years of cellaring. 20.01.2022 Friday tastes will be a Revelation tomorrow! . What a wine. Quite simply we don't think (maybe with the exception of some oaked Viura or Godello from Spain) that a wine of this quality and value can be found anywhere else in the world.... The fruit comes from a dry-grown vineyard where no herbicide or pesticides are used and the wine undergoes natural ferment from wild yeast with no additions at all (no sulphites, no acids, no powdered tannins, no sugar, no eggs, no milk, no fish protein - yes they really do put this stuff in wine)! To us this is white wine at it's very best and ridiculous value. Why? Because it has everything from adding nothing! A touch of fresh creamy butter, semi-dried apricots, tang and acidity, a little bit of oaky chewy grip, touch of nuttiness, a little bit of cheesy goodness, sherbety vibrancy, talcy minerality. It's tight but generous, the wine feels alive and vital, thirst quenching but complex and lingering. It's a sensational drink that's come from thoughtful people and an example of the 2018 vintage striking again! What they don't lack (and neither does Andrew) is character! . The 2016 Chagrin was the first Chardonnay Andrew made and is an absolute belter: zingy acid, nutty toasty smokey oak and very Burgundian in style.
