22.01.2022 Gastroenteritis (gastro) is a highly infectious viral infection that causes diarrhoea (runny, watery poo) and sometimes vomiting. Symptoms can also include feve...r, stomach pain, headache and muscle aches. Gastro is more common and severe in babies and young children. Babies under six months old can become dehydrated very easily and always need to be seen by a doctor if they have gastro. Most children do not need to take any medicine for gastro; however, it is important that they drink plenty of fluids, such as oral rehydration fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated. As gastro is contagious, children with gastro must be kept away from other children as much as possible until the diarrhoea has stopped, and washing hands thoroughly with soap and water after contact with your child (particularly before feeding and after nappy changes, or using the toilet) is the most effective way to prevent the spread. Do not hesitate to take your child to the doctor if they are becoming dehydrated, have bad stomach pain or you are worried. Speak to your local Advantage Pharmacist for more advice. See more
