17.01.2022 Azusa Pacific junior guard Brennan Rymer shares how the team responded to the abrupt end of their season, and the lessons it has given all within the program mo...ving forward. The 2019-20 season was a special one for the Cougars, as Azusa Pacific won its third PacWest Championship after going 25-4 overall and 20-2 in conference play. The Cougars started 0-2 in the PacWest schedule, but won 20 consecutive conference games to close out the regular season. The 20 conference wins is the most in program history. The Cougars were led by first year head coach Peter Bond, who was named the PacWest Coach of the Year. Azusa Pacific closed out the regular season ranked sixth in the country by the NABC, which is the program’s highest ranking in the NCAA era. Selom Mawugbe, the Cougars’ All-American forward, led the nation in field goal percentage (71.80%), and was second in blocked shots (91). He was the PacWest Player of the Year and a first-team PacWest selection. Teammates Jake Spurgeon (first-team) and Brennan Rymer (third-team), also earned All-Conference distinction, as the trio helped lead the way for the Cougars. Senior Noah Bundrant tallied the most minutes played on the team this season (838), as he earned the reputation of being an elite perimeter defender for the Cougars, consistently tasked with guarding opponent’s top scorers. The Cougars were bound for the program’s fourth trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament, as it was set to be held in San Diego on March 13, 14 & 15. Azusa Pacific was the second-seed, and was scheduled to face seventh-seed CS San Bernardino on Friday, March 13. The Cougars were in the middle of their practice on Thursday, March 12, when it was announced that the West Regional, and all NCAA Winter & Spring Championships, had been cancelled. Azusa Pacific finished the season ranked 3rd in the nation in blocked shots per game, 5th in rebound margin, and 10th in assists per game.
