21.01.2022 I will be posting a lot of information on how to grow a large range of herbs either in containers or in the garden next to other plants that will benefit each other. An interesting fact is that some plant like to be planted with certain other plants this is called companion planting. Coriander is a good example of companion planting loves to grow with Dill, Anise, Cabbage and Carrots but doesn't like to grow with Fennel. Coriander also attracts beneficial insects whose larva...e just love aphids and there are a lot of plants that are prone to aphid attack. I will be posting the Gardeans fact sheet on Herbs to start with and then on any plants that you need information on or are just interested in knowing where did this plant originate from and when and how did it make its way here or any other country from where it first grew. Plants are a huge part of everyone's life and having all the right information on how to grow your own fruit, vegetables and herbs in an urban environment I think is great. I know we cant grow everything we might need, but there is a certain satisfaction in growing what you like or need it could just be the herbs you need or a blueberry bush or vegetables. Also get the kids involved put down the phone and give them their own little area to grow what they like, you will see the satisfaction when they harvest the first tomato or strawberry trust me. 01.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Here is a Gardeans fact sheet for everyone's favourite herb Basil. When planting this herb you will find that snails like to eat Basil as much as will do, so here are a few controls you can try. Please think about your pets before trying any of these tips. 1. Use flat beer in sauces or bowls and leave in the garden overnight. The snails will be attracted to the beer and become intoxicated by the alcohol and drown. 2. Sprinkle crushed egg shells around the plants... and any areas that will stop the snails reaching plants. 3. Sprinkle coffee grounds around the base of the plants. Please do not use snail pellets that contain the pesticide chemical metaldehyde as this is toxic to small children, dogs and cats. Happy Gardening Everyone. See more
