20.01.2022 This year my family and I chose to holiday in Mallacoota over Christmas and New year's. The first half of our holiday was amazing. Great bush walks and beach trips. The second half has been a different experience. We are currently on board the HMAS Choules. In a few hours we dock in Western Port Bay and busses will get us home. We have had so much support from everyone it has been amazing. Both locals, friends and emergency services. The bushfire that came through was start...ed by a dry lightning strike not far from where we had been bush walking earlier on our holiday. The advice was to stay put in Mallacoota so we did. During the fire we stayed in the community centre shelter and luckily for our three boys they played Disney movies on a big screen. After the fire the power has been out and Vodafone and Optus failed. Information was hard to come by so we got a Telstra SIM which connected us to news. A day or so later the Police set up a dedicated info hub. The roads are out for over 100km in either direction from Mallacoota and will be for some time until all fire affected trees are cleared along the whole length. This is the main reason for the Navy Evacuation. Mallacoota is so isolated and with power, the tip and the road out of action a large number of people needed to leave so resources could be managed better. The CFA, Police, Local Council and the Navy have been amazing. Utterly amazing. It's not just the job they do it's the way they do it. Smiling and helping and making people feel at ease. Following all the advice I have never felt overly unsafe through this whole experience. It has been uncomfortable, boring with an overall feeling of wanting to do more to help. The experience of getting onto an amphibious vehicle and driving into the back of a ship at sea was pretty amazing. While the response to the fire has been amazing. I just want to see more proactive work going on to prevent the worst of these events. I want all levels of government to listen to the experts and show actual leadership.
