24.01.2022 Mulch, Mulch, Mulch! Mulching involves adding a layer of organic material to the surface of soil around plants. For a veggie garden in Melbourne it is an essential during our hot summers. It helps to retain moisture in the soil on warm days, and is like a cosy blanket at night when it's cold. Typically mulch includes formerly living material such as chopped leaves, straw, grass clippings, compost, wood chips, shredded bark, sawdust, pine needles, and even paper. As the mulch breaks down over time, it adds texture and nutrients to the soil. It is also very helpful in preventing weed germination and growth, and providing a moist environment for earthworms to thrive.
