15.01.2022 "My mother was having health problems at age 85. Her husband died and for the first time she lived alone. I attempted to talk her into a senior assisted care fa...cility and she would have nothing to do with it. I looked for housing in Rome, GA. I didn’t think she would like Houston and one of my children moved to Rome. I wanted her to have contact with her great grandchildren and granddaughter. I wanted her to have interaction with people every day. When I was a kid in Minnesota we always had a garden. My mother canned fruit and vegetables every fall. I had to find a house with an acre of land and big enough to have bedrooms for family and relatives. I wanted to replicate how her house was when she was growing up on the farm. I built a chicken coop and walkways she could use with her walker. I built wheelchair ramps and raised beds for gardens. I bought canning jars and went to the city dump with my truck to get free compost. I built six large raised beds and mom plotted out what goes where. She has been healthy since we arrived here. She gets confused at times but she always knows her way around gardens and hens. She is now 90 and goes outside every day to get the eggs and pick the fruit and vegetables before lunch. In the afternoon, she helps with canning leftovers and today she has put kale in the dehydrator. We will grind it up and put it in jars for use in the winter. I have so much that I will take it to the farmers market and trade for honey. I was inspired to grow food as soon as I realized my role as caregiver. We live in a neighborhood with mostly elderly people. On both sides of our house we have 90-year-old seniors. I had to build a big garden. Between the eggs, fruit and vegetables we donate more than half to the neighborhood. It keeps them involved and my mother enjoys company. We have had perfect strangers show up to see what we are growing and they never leave empty handed thanks to my mother. Because of our great climate in north Georgia, we get two crops a year for many vegetables. Today we planted our second run of peas and green beans. In mid-May, we planted more lettuce. Right now, I have over 50 great looking cucumbers to make pickles and to swap with at the farmers market for honey. Mother uses honey daily for her oatmeal. We need 15 pints a year. The vegetables and fruit we produce are strawberries, grapes, watermelon, pumpkins, apples, peaches, raspberries, rhubarb, lettuce, carrots, onions, peas, green beans, beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, peppers, cantaloupe, beets, cauliflower, parsley, oregano, basil, and we dehydrate onion for powder or flakes. We used to grow corn but a 92 year old neighbor plants a lot of corn. This year I will swap some of our produce with him and can about 20 pints. The garden has kept my mom engaged and healthy. She is never bored and for age 90 she is in good health due to her involvement in gardening, social involvement with neighbors and strangers and healthy eating. She is proud of her accomplishments in gardening and giving advice to other potential gardeners" -Cheryl Empey, Georgia
