23.01.2022 A handy tool to refer to in our current situation! Remember if you are feeling any cold and flu symptoms at all, have been in contact with anyone with coronavirus or travelled overseas in the last 14 days please do not attend the clinic. Stay safe and healthy.
20.01.2022 Don't forget to wash your hands Now that the restrictions loosening a little and things are changing we can't forget one of the key factors in our health and that's hand washing. The virus has an outer lipid layer. That is why soap and water is so important because you need soap to break that lipid layer and remove it from your hands. ... We touch our faces a lot, some reports up to 25 times an hour!! If we come in contact with the virus and touch our faces then our risk of contraction sky rockets. So wash your hands, try to consciously keep your hands away from your face (try telling my toddler and baby that!!) and do your best to keep safe and healthy #washyourhands #dontbecomplacent #covid19 #healthadvice #keepsafe #stayhealthy #osteopathy #osteopath #osteo #brighton #elsternwick #elwood #hampton #mckinnon #ormond #gardenvale
19.01.2022 Would you like to try eating low carb. Here’s a little challenge to see if it might be something that suits your goals.
18.01.2022 Back to the gym now that Melbourne has reopened? Are you at risk of injury? Are you doing TOO MUCH TOO SOON?... REMEMBER... you've probably not trained to the same capacity since March (apart from a few weeks in the middle of the year). So it's time to reassess and consciously program your training to resume in a safe and smart manner. If you do TOO MUCH TOO SOON your risk of injury is significantly increased. Soreness and pain can be a very normal reaction after training but how much is too much? Going back to 5 gym classes a week, or back to doing a 120kg DL may not be the smartest approach. Perhaps 2 classes the first week, 3 the next, an increase in intensity or weight before increasing to 4 might be a better approach. Something that won't render you too sore to perform well, or leave you with an injury. We are here to support your body in recovery after training. Osteopaths are trained in rehabilitation, exercise prescription and recovery management. Have a chat to us at your next appointment for some helpful tips to keep your risk of injury low. #osteopathy #osteopath #osteo #gardenvaleosteopathy #gym #training #toomuchtoosoon #injury
18.01.2022 Water consumption Water is very important for the body. It is involved in almost every process. Dehydration can lead to a lot of problems, including headaches. Did you know that the amount of water you should drink is calculated by your gender, body weight and age?... Eg. A 25 year old male who is 80kg and 180cm tall needs 2.8L per day A 50 year old female who is 65kg and 165cm tall needs 2.5L per day And, if you exercise you need to add another 1L to that! Take a look and see how much you need. There are plenty of hydration calculators online - why not try this one - hydrationforhealth.com #osteopathy #osteopath #osteo #water #hydration #dehydration #drinkup
17.01.2022 Do you wake up in the morning and struggle to walk because of pain in your feet and heels? Here's a tip to implement that may be able to reduce the pain you are feeling. ***... Place a #fasciitisfighter under your toes. You can start doing the exercise with two feet (one on the device) and then progress to one foot after a few weeks (lifting the other leg off the ground), more strength and more confidence. Lift your heel off the floor slowly as you count to 3 Hold it up as you count another 2 and then Lower down slowly for another count of 3 Do it 10-12 times and 3 times over with a 1 minute rest in between. We have the fasciitis fighter in clinic to purchase. It's a great little tool for those who suffer feet and ankle pain. Shout out if you'd like more info. *** Give it a try for a few weeks and let me know if you see any change. #osteopathy #osteopath #osteo #heelpain #plantarfasciitis #fasciitisfighter #exercise #strength #strengthenyourselfbetter #gardenvale #brighton #elsternwick #elwood #hampton #mckinnon #ormond

15.01.2022 FROZEN SHOULDER The capsule that encases the shoulder joint, ligaments, bones and tendons tightens up and stops the shoulder from moving. There is limited understanding as to WHY this happens.... People at risk of developing a frozen shoulder include: - Women over the age of 40 - People who have had their arm immobilised for a long period like with a fracture or rotator cuff injury - And some conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and thyroid disease. Symptoms include pain and very limited range of motion, like it is frozen and stuck. Some treatment can include exercise rehabilitation and medical interventions such as cortisone injections. The timeline of healing can be anywhere between 1-3 years. SO WHAT CAN YOUR OSTEOPATH DO? Exercises for the shoulder are the first port of call. Secondly your Osteopath will treat the shoulder and surrounding areas. If the shoulder's range of motion is restricted then surrounding structures have potential to become strained. Talk to your Osteopath if you have any further questions or concerns about your shoulder health.
13.01.2022 Common Shoulder Problems 1. Bursitis We have bursa in all our big joints. They are fluid filled sacs that sit between the muscle and the bone to reduce friction and damage. The problem is that if the muscles become very tight and rub against the bursa, it can become inflamed. Also if we do a lot of repetitive movements especially overhead the bursa can also become inflamed. ... Bursitis can present with pain in the shoulder and down the arm especially with arm movements out to the side (abduction). Osteopathic treatment of the rotator cuff muscle, neck and thoracic spine may be able to assist traditional treatment options (rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications) to reduce the hypertonicity (tightness) of the muscles and reduce their impact on the bursa. 12.01.2022 Common Shoulder Problems 2. Impingement Syndrome This occurs when the muscles and bursa get trapped with arm movements especially those above shoulder height. ... It can be common in people who do a lot of overhead movements such as painting, overhead work like that of an electrician and playing tennis. Other causes can be poor shoulder posture, trapping structures when moving in a suboptimal position. Symptoms include pain on movement especially overhead, difficulty reaching behind the back and weakness with lifting. Osteopathic treatment focuses on reducing hypertonicity (tightness) in the muscles, making sure movement through the cervical and thoracic spine is good and strengthening muscular weaknesses that could contribute to the problem. Other treatment options include ice, rest, anti-inflammatory medications and sometimes cortisone injection. 10.01.2022 What are you grateful for? Having a bit more time on your hands and being isolated can impact people in different ways. Some people struggle and some people cope.... Our mental state can impact our body, muscles and joints - its called a psychosomatic reflex. But if we consciously take a moment to stop and look at our lives and focus on the positive aspects it'll help you keep your chin up through these current times. I'm grateful for my family, my friends and neighbours, our health, the beautiful colour of the autumn leaves, my lovely supportive patients, having a weber bbq while our landlord gets us a new oven lol, strangers saying hello on a walk. Whatever it is, take a moment, come up with a list even if its silly, if you can make yourself smile you've done a good job! #grateful #gratitude #positive #takeamoment #reflect #osteopathy #osteopath #osteo #brighton #elsternwick #elwood #hampton #mckinnon #ormond #gardenvale
10.01.2022 Please don’t attend your appointment if you have any symptoms of coronavirus. Remember the symptoms 1. Cough 2. Fever 3. Breathing difficulty (in more severe cases). More mild symptoms like a sore throat, headache and tiredness can also present. When I went to the GP a few days ago, they were turning people away who had cold and flu symptoms, so I guess we can’t be too careful if we want to #slowthecurve. Keep healthy and safe out there and remember to practice #socialdistancing when you do need to go out and about.
08.01.2022 There are lots of fun things to do when #socialdistancing and #stayingathome. Join me in the #10pushupchallenge. Can you do 10?? The last few for me were really hard, my socks were slipping on the carpet (definitely go bare feet). But now I know I can do 10 I’ll keep trying each day to get more. Wonder how many I can reach by the end of all this craziness!! Tag us in your challenges so we can see all your greatness!!! #goodluck

06.01.2022 THE SHOULDER JOINT The shoulder joint is the most MOBILE joint in our body. Having said that it is also the most UNSTABLE. As a result it is more prone to injury and dislocation compared with other joints. Shoulder posture can be a really big problem for a lot of people.... If adopting a slouched posture, the shoulder joint rolls into a forward position. This position can lead to strains around the shoulder, up into the neck and also through the back. There are a LOT of muscles that attach to the shoulder and into the neck and back so when we are treating it there is a lot to address. Are you suffering from pain in your shoulders? Talk to your Osteopath at your next visit and see what we might be able to do to help. Stay tuned later in the week for some great exercises to help strength the muscles around the shoulder to help keep is stable.
02.01.2022 Vitamin D Now that the sunny days are becoming few and far between its important to think about if you're getting enough vitamin D (main source comes from sunlight). Vitamin D is important for many body systems with one of the most important being its role in helping the body absorb calcium for bone strength and health.... Vitamin D is involved in other important processes in the body. Symptoms of deficiency can include regular sickness or infection, back pain, muscle pain, hair loss, complications with pregnancy, cardiovascular conditions and immune function. So if you cannot get enough sun, sometimes, if you are deficient, a supplement may be of benefit. This might be something worthwhile discussing with your health care professionals to see if it may be of some benefit. #osteopathy #osteopath #osteo #vitamind #sun #health #diseaseprevention
