24.01.2022 STOP AND READ This is your daily reminder to stop for a minute and breathe or stretch. One of our favourite quick breathing techniques only takes a couple of seconds, can help to restart your nervous system and can be done anytime and anywhere. ... How do I do it? Take a moment, close your eyes if you feel comfortable. Take a deep breath in for 3 seconds. Hold it in for 3 seconds, breathe out for 3 seconds and hold it once again for 3 seconds. Repeat this cycle 4 times minimum and you are all done! If you have the time or feel up to it, keep going for as long as you'd like

24.01.2022 As the weather is beginning to cool down, it's important to maintain our health so that our body can fight off any colds or flus. There are 4 things that we encourage you to consider first and foremost 1. Your sleep - Research has shown that a good nights sleep will assist with many health concerns including immune support. ... 2. Exercise - Make sure you fit in some movement everyday. 3. Vitamin C intake - Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that will help protect your cells from harmful free radicals, and enhance your immune system. 4. Gut Health - Majority of the immune system lies within the gastrointestinal tract so eating whole foods and supporting gut health is paramount. For more info on the topic and a few tips for each of these 4 categories, head to the link for the full blog... https://gardenvaletcm.com.au/all-things-chi/immune-support/

24.01.2022 Does this sound familiar?? The ideal female period comes regularly, is pain free and has minimum discomfort pre, during and after the period. The menstrual blood is fresh red in colour, the amount is not too heavy and not too light, and there are no clots. That’s the ideal. However, the reality is quite different for many women who suffer irregularities, pain, emotional instability and other discomfort, and too many women think it’s normal to have to suffer pai...n and discomfort in relation to their periods. The good news is that many period problems can be treated or minimised by awareness, by balancing the body and through lifestyle choices. In Chinese medicine, the history of a woman’s periods and associated symptoms tell us a lot about her overall health. Menstruation, gynaecology and reproductive functions are related to the fluctuations of several different hormones. In Chinese medicine we acknowledge this but we also have our own terminology: the Yin and Yang, Qi and Blood must all be in balance. Hormones, Yin, Yang, Qi and Blood can all get out of balance either by being depleted, excessive, blocked or stagnated. This can happen due to factors including genetics, trauma, surgery, illness, environment, diet, lifestyle and stress.

21.01.2022 Self Care is a term that is thrown out quite often but what is it really? To us, self care is taking the time for tasks and rituals that help you prioritise and connect with your mental and physical health. In a society that celebrates productivity and business, it has become so hard to slow down and connect with your body and what it needs. Acts of self care are how you do that. Sometimes blocking out time in your schedule for even 30 minutes of self-care is the best way ...to make sure it happens. It can be going for a walk around the block, doing exercise, taking yourself out for a meal or watching a cheesy movie. Whatever you need to do to relax and feel good.

13.01.2022 Food and the Menstrual Cycle How food can help keep our hormones in balance? Sweet cravings for chocolates and treats are definitely associated with having a period, and no one can be blamed for that! ... However, we can eat in accordance to the cycles of menstruation to best support the body for a healthy cycle, whilst still indulging in moderation. The follicular phase of the cycle, is day 1 of bleeding until ovulation. When we are bleeding, keep in mind that our body is losing blood and nutrients, so it is a good time to replenish with blood nourishing foods. This is a great time to drink bone broths and eat iron dense foods. Based on a 28 day cycle (a normal cycle can range from 21-35 days), ovulation occurs on day 14. The luteal phase is the second half of our cycle, from ovulation until our next period, and progesterone levels rise. As progesterone rises, so does our body temperature. This heat in Chinese medicine theory may also cause us to be slightly more irritated or emotional. Some of us get night sweats. We don’t want to add fuel to the fire, so its best to avoid the hot, spicy food. Head to the link for more details and our full blog https://gardenvaletcm.com.au//food-and-our-menstrual-cycle/

04.01.2022 Alcohol & the Festive Season Here are 3 quick tips to be mindful of when drinking this Festive Season: 1. Don't drink on an empty stomach ... Alcohol is absorbed directly through the stomach into the bloodstream. Having food in your stomach will slow down the absorption of alcohol through the stomach walls. Without food, intoxication will happen much faster and the affects of alcohol can be heightened. 2. Quench your thirst with tea or water If you're feeling thirsty, reach for some water or tea before reaching for an alcoholic beverage. Make sure you're not using alcohol to quench thirst as it will not provide your body with the hydration that water or tea will. 3. If you've drunk a bit too much, drink some Green Tea Alcohol has an inflammatory effect on the gut and liver. Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties which can help relieve some of the symptoms you may feel when you've drunk a bit too much.

03.01.2022 CHRONIC PAIN Chronic pain in our body can present in many different areas and with varying intensity. It is common for chronic pain to be the result a specific injury such as a lower back disc trauma or arthritis, causing debilitating back and sciatic pain. Alternatively, chronic pain may be the result of a specific treatment, like chemo or radiation therapy. Peripheral neuropathy (needle-like pain experienced in the hands and feet) is a common side effect of such tre...atments. But much of the chronic pain I treat in the clinic is idiopathic, meaning it has no obvious cause. If someone is experiencing an acute intense episode of their chronic pain, the intention of our treatment will always be to provide relief as quickly as possible. This will usually involve a number of acupuncture treatments within a short period of time, often daily or every second day for three to four treatments. Acupuncture may be applied locally to the pain area or, if pain is particularly intense, needling away from the site of pain will provide better results.
