24.01.2022 For those that are considering coming to the 2018 regatta but don’t know what to expect, here’s our Vimeo from 2017. Plenty of fantastic footage of the area and... the boats. So much thanks to the amazing and ever growing support of South Gippsland Yacht Club, the members and the community in general. See more
22.01.2022 Back in the shed after a short break, back on Maori Lass. We have finnished all the frame repairs including new hanging knees. Next was the plank splines in the topsides to replace the caulking. The butt seams and stem rebates will also be splined. Looking forward to finishing the hull repairs and moving to the deck and getting on with some nice deck joinery. Hope everyone had a great New Year and has a great 2018... Cheers Terry
21.01.2022 It's been a great week in the shed and it's only Wednesday. Yesterday we had a visit from Master Shipwright Bill Foster,. Bill along with John Lucas are wonderful supporters of Tasmanian maritime history and have been and still are mentors to many. Bill is a natural teacher in these pictures he is demonstrating how to correctly clench a copper plank fastening to Roscoe and Cheryl. Bill as a young apprentice assisted Don Muir in building Skimmer so when we start her ref...urbishment next year we are looking forward to Bill helping us with details when we return her to her original fitout. Maori Lass is getting new structure in way of the engine room and when finished will be coated with 2 pack paint for easy cleaning, we will be refitting the engine room for easy access to filters and such. So all-in all a happy shed and Roscoe is starting to like the hick music on Huon FM! See more
20.01.2022 Norway has an amazingly rich maritime heritage which is still being preserved by several very active museums and other projects. Since Vega was built in 1892 in... Olve, Norway I have always had a strong respect for the place. Poking around on the net today I discovered this great little film which I hope you will enjoy as much as I did. Take your time to absorb the details. It will be time well rewarded. I'm always looking for films about traditional ship and boat building. The older the better. If you stumble across any be sure to let me know and please do like the page. It encourages me to keep searching and sharing. See more
19.01.2022 Well at this time of year the shed is at its winter best an inviting 5c in the morning. However work on the Island Star is progressing well with the fitout roughed in ready for painting and trim, lots of work done to reorganize the engine room and we have started to laminate cabin top beam. It's to cold to type with my gloves off so that's it for this post Cheers Terry
18.01.2022 I went to Hardanger Fartovernserter in 2006 on my overseas fellowship trip studying traditional wooden boat building and teaching. It is an amazing marine and cultural preservation and teaching centre. They operate closely with local community and government, they are self funded and along with training schemes for young locals also train professional apprentice boat builders. Their model would work in Australia and I think particularly in Tasmania.
18.01.2022 Long time no post due to the fact that we have been really busy. Maori Lass is finished back in her berth in Kettering and our next project Island Star is in the shed. She was built in Victoria as a ferry later to cray fishing our task is to convert her to cruising. We are lucky to welcome Chris Liaubon and Tom Blue to the team, Tom is talented qualified Shipwright and Chris is a skilled marine finisher/ decorator and is also enjoying assisting with the shipwrighting. Hope ...you all enjoy following the project with us. Cheers Terry See more
18.01.2022 Launching day for Moari Lass at last. What was going to be a straight forward splining of the topsides turned out to be a major rebuild. It has been a lot of hard work bringing her back to seaworthy but very rewarding. Thanks to Roscoe and Cheryl Barnnet for committing there time and resources to preserving apart of Tasmanian maritime history in Moari Lass. Also thanks to Chris Liaubon for helping to put the finishing touches to Moari Lass, Chris is the new member of the te...am at the shed Chris is a skilled marine decorator and will be a great asset to the shed. Looking forward to starting the next project which is a full fit out of an ex fishing boat more on this project later. Have a great weekend everyone. Cheers Terry See more
17.01.2022 Sorry not to post recently so here is the latest progress on Maori Lass. Roscoe has been busy on the paint brush and I have been busy with new hatches and coamings as well as converting the keel stepped mast to being deck stepped. Today I moved back into the engine room staring with running the boring bar up the shaft log to acomadate the new GRP stern tube and final line up of the engine beds. We will need to keep up the good progress as we have an exiting new project to sta...rt in April which will keep the shed busy for the rest of 2018. Hope everyone has had a great start to the year Cheers for now Terry See more
15.01.2022 Fremad II får ny hud. Plankane er 2,5 tommer tjukke, og ein reknar ein time i dampkassa per tomme. / Fremad II's hull is getting planked. A rule of thumb for steaming planks is an hour per inch, so these need 2,5 hours. Video: Silje Ensby
15.01.2022 Nice line squall to start summer with Roscoe pretending to work! We must be making progress as we are starting repairs inway of the chainplates, mast step has been removed for acsess as will a section of the bilge stringer Actually Roscoe is turning out to be a good apprentice and seems to be enjoying himself so I will have to work him harder.... The main thing is that the beer fridge is a ripper and icy cold so all is right in the shed. Have a great weekend everyone. Cheers Terry
13.01.2022 To fascinating not to post.Skills long lost in the art of shipbuilding.
10.01.2022 Back in the shed after a lovely time at the Inverlock Classic Wooden Dighy Regatta. Jabiru did well winning best presented dinghy and best wooden boat and the sailing was superb with lots of beautiful sailing dinghies on the water. Roscoe brought his pinners punt to the shed this week and as always she looked great. On Maori Lass we finished of below the water line and struck in the water line. Off to the re-launching of Tassie Two at the RYCT tomorrow which will be great so... have a good weekend everyone. Cheers Terry See more
09.01.2022 A hole lot of things happening in the shed lately. On Maori Lass the engine room fit out is continuing with a new GRP stern tube, PSS dripless gland, stem bearing and engine beds. The shaft log required enlarging using a boring bar. The new mast with be deck stepped and a mast post and king plank have been fitted. I might add while the hard working shipwright has been toiling away the P. O. B owner Roscoe is swanning around various wooden boat festivals on the big Island it'...s okay for some,. Also a nice foreign for Anthony and Kelly's new house, a Tas Oak laundry bench. Looking forward to Roscoe back on the job next week and yes I will be cracking the whip.l Cheers for now Terry
08.01.2022 Big week astern at the shed with some good progress made on Maori Lass. The engine room reconstruction about done with the frames and floor timbers fitted. The engine beds are dry fitted to the string line through the shaft log, the original log was about 11/2" out of line which will be adjusted back closer to the center of the ship. A boring bar is the best and really the only way to create a true hole from the outside of the stern post into the engine room. I had found a...n old boring bar tucked away under the spar bench however as prior to Maori Lass having no immediate use for one I hadn't had a close look at it, we I pulled it out it was found to be in perfect condition which my fellow shipwrights will understand to be a huge win. All the while while I was going on about shaft logs and boring bars and such the POBO Roscoe is still busting out bits of old Maori Lass he looks a bit down in the picture but he seams to be coping reasonably well. Anyway the seabreazes are in with beautiful weather time to go sailing I think! Have a great weekend everyone. Cheers Terry See more
08.01.2022 Hay look what Roscoe Barnett installed in the shed after your last visit
07.01.2022 Well another week astern in the the shed Maori lass going ahead we have moved on to the engine room. Sorry about the picture of the POBO Roscoe reclining on the repairs under the cockpit but he was just enjoying the work in progress.Later the real boss showed up and went into sail making mode with a new beanie for the thinning old boat builder. Spending the night onboard carefree then Sharpie sailing on Sunday Cheers Terry
05.01.2022 I have done it again gone against my cardinal rule, fleet ownership is for mugs! The other week I went to have a look at a VJ that had been hanging in a barn in Cygnet for the last 15 years or so. Bill the owner said she would be restorable, as it turned out he was right. Next thing she was on the back of my truck heading back to the boat shed. She will need new topside plywood and a new deck but her frames and keel are in good condition. She has the original rig and sail wardrobe, rudder and center board. her sail number is 8320 which is on the mainsail head board and carved into the skeg. The sails are Gary Fogg stamped 1969/70. it will be an interesting journey to find her name and her history as it comes to light. I am to be a Grandad early next year so I do have a little time before the skipper will be ready to sail her.
