25.01.2022 A little bit of headlock breakout. Of course, the best defence to a headlock is to not be put in one in the first place.
25.01.2022 Doesn't matter what skill or fitness level you start on. Just matters that you show up, and keep putting in the work. 3 mins of practice looks far less impressive than 30mins. 30 days later, you'll forget what 3 mins even felt like.
23.01.2022 Hubud is a drill to develop hand-eye-stick coordination, but we more commonly refer to it as "Push Parry Counter" when it's time to make it practical
21.01.2022 Kids class is tonight!
20.01.2022 Step 1; Learn technique Step 2; Learn to exploit the possible gaps of the technique Step 3; Learn to turn that exploit back on itself. No such thing as a perfect unbeatable technique. Just knowing where you are open, to know where your opponent is open.
18.01.2022 Our next Seminar is up! A common fear is "will i just freeze in the moment?". If you'd like to train your body to react with defense in mind automatically when a threat presents itself, this is for you!
17.01.2022 From movement to function! Changing both the level and and the angle of approach can set up some of the slickest takedowns.
17.01.2022 One of our more complex pad drills, the Hurricane. Rather than trading shots in a static, one on one fashion, the dynamic nature of the drill means everybody involved is balancing many priorities at once. The defender (@bigredpanda_22) is given a set order of attackers, and a set combo of strikes to intercept. The defender decides which hand leads, keeping the attackers on their toes.... The attackers (@damienkamps @kyle.bennett.313 @snarkingwolf) need to -Follow the order of attack -Get the combo right, including switching leads with the defenders prompt -Reposition after every attack Reaction time, spatial awareness, body memory, striking, footwork, teamwork... They all get a flogging!
17.01.2022 Hill sprints to polish off a year of massive goal kicking for Shane. 25kg of sustainable weight loss, a body weight pullup, a 220kg deadlift. Shane's gone from a quiet, unconfident, sedentary guy with some seriously bad nutrition to an absolute beast that gives everything a red hot crack. Going from a size XXL to a size L with breathing room doesn't happen overnight, but with the tools, the training and the attitude you'll get there!
16.01.2022 A commonly asked question I get when running a class is "Where do these exercises come from?" Silat-Calisthenics comes directly from function! Each exercise either strengthens a portion of a defence; or engages the same sequence of muscles and movement as a technique.... Over the upcoming weeks, we'll be bringing out a series of videos detailing some exercises that you can try at home. We'll start with our Gecko Kick Pushups! Give them a go, and let me know if you want more below!
16.01.2022 Jaden hits the nail on the head! Dealing with multiple attackers, one of the biggest headaches in self defence. Train with progressively more intensity and against worsening odds, in order to build the resilience to get out alive.
16.01.2022 Flynn working on his first ever side monkeys in tonights kids self defence class. Escape is the best defence for a situation you couldn't avoid!
15.01.2022 Some fun stick drills from this week!
14.01.2022 I'm very proud to reveal our new Level 3 Victor, Lance. He's been with us for about 3yrs now, and had to put every bit of stamina, willpower, and technique he's acquired on the way to use today. After 3hrs of gruelling effort, he passed with flying colours. Congratulations mate! She'ba!
13.01.2022 It's been great to see the progression in everybody's Sempoks, to the point where takedowns are starting to be feasible. There's few things that spark joy like dodging that hook and pulling a "Cobra Kai"
13.01.2022 Building the motor pattern and strength to break out of a bear hug and lift is easy! Practice your spider push ups (as seen in our last video), as the crossed over leg and arm positions allow you to create space and exert force from unexpected angles.
11.01.2022 Slips! Found in many striking disciplines, they're a great defensive technique. Not only moving the head off the line, but creating opportunities for counterattack or retreat. Outside skip, inside slip. Easy to learn, hard to master!
11.01.2022 Coming up this weekend!
09.01.2022 Next in our series of Silat Calisthenics exercises; the Spider Push Up. For this exercise, you want both your arms and your legs crossed over. Starting with your palms and elbows flat on the ground, use your triceps to push your chest off the ground. For added difficulty, bring your weight forward over your arms.... Lower yourself back into the start position, then change over top arm and top leg to promote equal strength development. A more advanced difficulty this time! Give them a go, and keep posted for the next video showing what technique Spider Push Ups build power for!
09.01.2022 On Sunday the 27th of May, Gariyan Silat will run our next Womens Self Defence Seminar, "The Mind Of A Predator". We will decode and deconstruct the different types of attacker, giving you a strong understanding of the strategic difference between dealing with an Opportunist, a Sadist, a Violent or a PR assailant. One of the universal laws of conflict is "Know Your Enemy", and this is a prime opportunity to gain the knowledge that will allow you to apply this principle.
09.01.2022 One week to go! There are just 4 spots left!
08.01.2022 Due to popular demand; we are re-running our Zero Range seminar. If you missed out last time; you're in luck!
08.01.2022 The Gecko Kick Part 2! Here we see the more agile and acrobatic side of Silat! Using the foundation of strength and mobility developed by practicing the exercise, we can put the exact same movement to use as a self-defence technique. Have you tried them out yet?
07.01.2022 Kicking off 2021 with Dyno Scorpion Pushups!
07.01.2022 Six days to go! Still a couple of spots available; so stop sitting on the fence and come on down!
05.01.2022 Why take a hit if you can block a hit? Why block a hit if you can dodge it instead? Why dodge a hit if you can stop it from even being thrown? Train to do it all, and then you get the luxury of options to fit the circumstances.
04.01.2022 As we finish of our last Saturday class of the year, there's two big announcements I'd like to make Firstly, our timetable is expanding! From the 2nd of January, we will be training adults classes 6pm every Mon-Friday, as well as our Saturday 10am! Our kids classes will remain at Friday 3:30pm for ages 9-12, and Tuesday 3:30 for ages 5-8.... Secondly, it's my pleasure to introduce Jaden Bird as our official assistant instructor! This year Jaden has proved to be an amazing example of the values and skills that are required to teach others the path from Victim to Victor. Thank you for all of your hard work mate, you've earned every bit of it! Stay safe over the holidays folks, and I look forward to seeing you all in 2021! -Josh
03.01.2022 It's not the path of least resistance, but the the path of most effective
02.01.2022 Well folks, looks like we're being smacked with another 3-day lockdown. We won't have class these next three days, however if you have a one-on-one with me this afternoon we'll be able to get it done. I'll keep everyone informed as things update. https://www.facebook.com//a.114296864668/10159598134094669/... XMA Header Image See more
01.01.2022 Working on technique often means dialling down intensity. It's no good training at 50% speed if your partner is working at 25%. Allow yourself time to spot the points that you can improve on, rather than immediately trying to pressure test with live sparring or dull contact. That fun comes a little later!
