13.01.2022 How to setup a ride-on mower cutter deck for mulching and/or wet conditions. I wish there was a short answer I could give you (as I'm not much of a typist) but in order to establish the many points on deck/blade setup I may actually have to write an article and post it separately. To be specific to your question, the sweep is the sweep of the mower blades across the tops of the cut blades of grass and to a lesser degree the sweep of the skirt of the deck itself. If you are ...running the front of your deck 1/4" lower than the back of the deck you will also be cutting 1/8" higher on the sides of the sweep of the blade effectively mowing a 1/8" wave into the final cut (not a flat cut). If you are running spacers that put the blade tips level with the skirt of the deck and use a chute blocker (or full mulching baffles) you have effectively created a rear discharge deck due to the 1/4" gap at the rear (that is why the blowout which is more noticeable when in wet clods). By running a level deck, the blades are massaging the clippings into the remaining grass sward throughout their entire rotation. Then there is the issue of running too many spacers when cutting wet grass. In doing that you are not removing as much moisture from the wet blades of grass you are trying to cut. By running fewer spacers the skirt of the deck is mimicking having a front roller on your deck by wiping and pushing the excess moisture well below the cutting zone of the blades which then cut the now substantially drier grass and the back edge of the deck gives the cut grass a final sweep flicking the blades a final time. This will also leave a better stripe by laying the blades in one direction (bonus). This could only be bettered by using front and rear rollers like on a Reel Mower. Finally, blade selection. Whether you are pseudo mulching (side discharge baffles and chute blocker) or full mulching baffle kit, you should not be trying to have your clippings beat Elon Musk to Mars by using high lift blades. Mulching requires the clippings to be struck by the blades as many times as possible (preferably in the one pass) which is hard to do when they are in orbit. A wavy mulching blade keeps the clippings "in the kill zone" much longer and helps to drive the mulch below the surface. Gator blades are a good second choice and almost as effective. For side discharge and bagging "Sweep as you mow" for mulch mowing or using a chute blocker "Sweep AFTER you mow" (especially in wet or damp conditions). When mulching in the wet, using high lift blades will cause excessive grass accumulation inside the deck housing which eventually falls off in uncontrollable clods. Use Gator blades or mulching blades. Do not forget when mulching it is best to sweep after you mow. Removing excessive moisture as you are mowing will also improve the finish and help to reduce grass accumulation under the deck.

09.01.2022 ARE YOU RUNNING THE CORRECT FUEL IN YOUR OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT? Honda, Kawasaki and Briggs & Stratton engines are all made to run on regular fuel 87(USA) octane or 91(RON) Eurpoe/Australia with few exceptions they are 8.2:1 compression ratio. Some of the new Vanguard EFI run 8.5:1 compression ratio(s) and would need to be run on 91+(USA) octane or 95(RON) in Europe/Australia. ALL Kohler engines run anything from 8.5:1 to 9.2:1 compression ratio(s) and so NONE OF THEM SHOULD BE RUN ON REGULAR FUEL due to them all having higher than usual compression. Only use Higher octane PREMIUM fuels in Kohler engines 95(USA) or 98(RON) Europe/Australia. A lot of the Kohler engine failures I read about are probably due to running incorrect fuel in them.

03.01.2022 Happy Days! New spindles just arrived. $175AUD each but at least I now will have spares for quick change should bearings fail.

02.01.2022 18 year old Opal trailer restoration well on its way to competition. Stitch welding patches into rusty 16 guage steel using gas less fluxcore wire isn’t an easy task but you have to work with what you have available.
