23.01.2022 For anyone that didn't hear, my opponent was forced to withdraw from our bout on Saturday due to illness. While it was frustrating and disappointing to go through the entire process minus the actual fight, it has been rescheduled for Reign MMA on April 8. Let me know if you want tickets, this is a big card!

17.01.2022 A brief moment where I am not getting hit in sparring.
17.01.2022 Perfectionism Isn't Helping: We cling desperately to familiar things and love to deal in absolutes. By failing to acknowledge other ways to do things, we lose opportunities to grow and learn new ways of accomplishing a task. This can be seen in multiple different areas from technique to nutrition and bigger topics to which school or gym is the best. It seems as though rigid beliefs can either lead to complacency in the majority or perfectionism in the minority. That is, some ...people that will settle on an irrational belief that their technique is the best. But, for some people, this same rigidity can lead them to chase the optimal way, or a perfect ideal. Believing in ideals or perfect options leads to obsession and even worse can lead to entrenchment. When we believe that there is a 'perfect' way to do something, nothing less is acceptable. The truth of the matter is, there is no ideal. Thinking that there is a perfect strike or position leads you to fixate on irrelevant details instead of the important principles that hold true regardless of the context. The method should always be dictated by the context. Fixating on the micro-details makes it difficult to see the macro. It doesn't matter how well your throw a kick if it doesn't land; it was a was of effort. I have spent countless rounds refining a strike, only to have it whiff in sparring. It wasn't because the technique was poor, it just didn't fit the situation.. Stop looking for optimal, because it doesn't really exist. Thinking in absolutes will hold you back. I'll use nutrition as example because irrational convictions about absolute best options run rampant in peoples' dietary choices. With the popularity of the ketogenic diet and other low-carb diets, many people are espousing the benefits, claiming it's the best option. Especially in MMA, thinking that a low-carb approach is the best is incredibly damaging, because our sport is heavily glycolytic and is dependent of carbohydrates. Is the ketogenic diet effective for some people? Yes. Is it the best option? Probably not. The truth of the matter is that you can replace 'ketogenic' with any other popular diet and it holds true. All diets work on the same underlying principle (calorie reduction) and the best option will be dictated by the circumstances. This holds true with any technique; the best option is constantly changing and there cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach to executing it.

13.01.2022 2 hour strength and conditioning workout done. Now to refuel before my third and final practice of the day
13.01.2022 Monday is here, so try to remember one thing: If you are working towards your goals and on the path you want, you are not 'grinding'. You are not Sisyphus pushing the stone up the hill. You aren't being forced to carry the burden. You get to. You are lucky enough to be able to go after your goals and have the opportunity to be able to pursue your passions. So does giving the work a negative name such as 'the grind' help at all?.... So spare us the talk about your grind, stop complaining about the difficulty and go do the work.
12.01.2022 Physical preparation is just one of the critical aspects of preparing for competition. When all other factors are equal, the faster, stronger and fitter fighter will win. How many great fighters have fallen due to being unfit or getting overwhelmed physically. Additionally, poor attention to physical fitness can increase the rate of injury and limit skill acquisition. Its pretty obvious that physical preparedness is important, but what does it really mean to be in shape? Th...e physical preparation or conditioning process is the means of developing the required bio-motor characteristics needed for the sport. This is a complicated way to say that the needed aspects for the sport are developed so that the fighter be fully ready for competition. It is important to note that the word 'conditioning' isn't in reference to doing hill sprints or battle ropes until you want to cry. Rather, it is in reference to the act of preparing the body to the demands of the sport. What it means to be conditioned is specific and is dictated by not just the sport, but also the style of play/competition. Take a champion marathon runner and champion strongman. Both are at peak condition for their sport, despite possessing very different physical qualities. This is because each sport has very different demands and places emphasis on different physical qualities. In order to be optimally prepared for the event, the athlete must spend the appropriate time training the specific qualities they need for their competition. These physical qualities are divided into, strength, endurance, speed, flexibility and skill or motor control. All of these are inter-related and are required in varying degrees based on sport. For example, strength is required for speed but flexibility is required to express strength in a range of motion. The sport itself will dictate the importance of each quality. It not very important for a weightlifter to be able to run a 10km race, but they do need to be strong and fast. To complicate matters further, each of these qualities can be broken down further give sub-qualities like strength endurance, speed-strength, strength-speed, absolute strength, aerobic endurance and anaerobic endurance. The physical preparation process for mixed martial arts is incredibly challenging. This is because very few sports require the combination of so many competing physical qualities. For a fight, you need strength, speed, aerobic/anaerobic endurance, flexibility and skill. However, with the proper understanding of the training process and proper sequencing, it is possible to develop each of these so that you are peaking physically on fight night.
11.01.2022 Path of Least Resistance: This is a long one so here is the TL;DR. Don't play to your opponent's strengths, find the path of least resistance go hard. There are many military concepts and strategies that can be applied to MMA, but the most useful may be the notion of a direct versus indirect approach to conflict. A direct approach is one where the forces of one side are applied directly against the strength of the opposition. This is best exemplified in World War I, where the...Continue reading

10.01.2022 For anyone who may have missed my last fight. My thoughts on my performance are that it was a cautious outing. I am happy with the outcome but dissatisfied with the decisions made in the fight. It is the job of the fighter to actively move towards finish their opponent and in the moment I made decisions that were not conducive to that goal. I was for too content to avoid risks and do damage from relative safety. This is something that I think it is very important to address i...n future bouts. 05.01.2022 How Can You Possibly Train Mental Toughness? Martial arts are tied to long standing traditions and methods. There are many positive things to come from this such as the lessons of respect but there are some traditions that are holding MMA back. The clearest example of this is the use of 'mental toughness' training. This is something that seems to be still done due to a lack of understanding and partly because it is has always been done. Mental toughness isn't forged with ket...Continue reading
05.01.2022 After taking some time to reflect on my performance this weekend, I really wanted to take a second to express gratitude for everyone who made it possible for me to get the victory. First, thank you to Cam and all those involved in organizing Eternal mma. As an athlete, the show runs flawlessly and is always a pleasure to be a part of. Next, everyone at New Breed and Slam for their help. Every coach and every student plays a part in my development and I would not be where I a...m without it. Thank you to Coco, who has really been a huge assest to my training. Having his knowledge and training in the environment he has created has been so beneficial to my physical preparation. Thanks to pendulum supplements, a very recent addition but a great company that has some good products. Finally, thank you to my family and friends. You guys have supported me through the highs and lows and have helped me to believe in myself. Despite having won the fight, I am not satisfied. I fought too cautiously and needed to take more risks to go after the finish. The glory is fleeting and I am very excited to go into a skill acquisition phase and come back better next year. This is just a step in my path of thoughtful violence.
04.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who helped me towards my fight on Eternal 7 last night. Everything I have achieved to this point would not be possible without everyone around me. Thank you to Cam for having me on your show, I hope that I was entertaining for the crowd. I think the most important thank you goes to my opponent. Whether he is victorious or I am, he plays a huge role in my development as a person and as an athlete. Finally, thank you to my friends, team and coaches for gi...ving me the knowledge and support to get me to where I'm going. Last night highlighted the areas in which I need to improve, but this is my time to stop living in "potential" and be great. Tomorrow it's back to the grind!
04.01.2022 Scalping Season.
04.01.2022 Best way to spend Saturday. #COMPETE
03.01.2022 How Prepared Are You? Mixed martial arts is an incredibly difficult sport to prepare for. The sheer number and complexity of skill-sets make it difficult to balance what is necessary and what the body can actually handle. However, there is more to fight preparation than just running some hills and sparring. So are you preparing in every way? Training and conditioning is the process where an athlete is prepared for competition. The training process can be broken into distinct,... but inter-related, aspects. These are physical preparation, technical preparation, tactical preparation and psychological preparation. Physical preparation is generally what is focused on and entails the development of the physical characteristics needed for the competition. This includes the specific and general physical qualities that are needed to perform optimally in the fight. To put it simply, physical preparation is about making sure you show up fast, powerful and with enough endurance to sustain it for the duration of the bout. Technical preparation is how well the athlete can execute the various techniques required, with intensity and repetition. This is how well can you throw a punch, execute a double-leg take down or finish a choke. A key aspect of technical preparation is quality, as it is highly important that the technique is executed correctly to ensure it is the most efficient. Drilling techniques is important, but mindlessly drilling with poor form is detrimental. Tactical preparation refers to the level at which you can decide the appropriate techniques to use in a given context. It is essentially how well you can decide the appropriate technique and then apply it at the correct time. An example of poor tactical preparation is a fighter repeatedly trying the same technique despite it not working. Their decision making process is poor, as they are not looking adapting and changing their tactics to fit the context. The final aspect is psychological preparation. This is how well an fighter can deal with the emotional or psychological factors that can affect their performance. This includes their ability to focus or concentrate, their confidence and their ability to deal with the pressure of the fight. Psychological preparation is very important but often overlooked. Many people fail to realise that psychological weaknesses can be addressed and improved, just like physical weakness. Just like a physical limitation, a psychological weakness can be identified and then attacked with careful planning. Each of these aspects are highly interdependent, making it almost impossible to rank their importance. Failing to prepare one particular aspect may be the difference between winning and losing. So, think about your training. Are you covering all of these bases or are you neglecting one?

02.01.2022 I think that I learn more teaching kids than I actually teach them.
01.01.2022 Don’t look for others to motivate you! I’m not the biggest fan of traditional ‘motivation’. The typical motivational post consisting of some guy with his shirt off and inspirational quote, might be the worst thing. However, sometimes, it can light a fire under you to get moving, but that flame quickly burns out. The truth is that you can’t rely on outside motivation to get you through. You have to find something that drives YOU. There are two types of motivations; intrinsic a...nd extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation is being driven by an external reward or something outside of you. Think of these as winning a competition or reaching your goal weight. The problem with these is they are often out of our control and if we fail to reach them we become discouraged and give up. Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, can be super powerful. This is because an intrinsic motivator comes from within you. This can be the fact that you love training because it’s good for you, you know that the harder you prepare the better you will do in competition or that you know eating healthy will help you feel better. These are powerful motivations because they are within your control and make you excited about the process, not the outcome. If you were chasing a carrot on a stick, how long would you chase it before you became discouraged? How demoralising is it when we feel like we work so hard and don’t hit out goals? Well, if you rely on your love for the process, that carrot doesn’t matter. You will keep going, because you love it. The carrot is just a bonus. In the end, the process is all that matters.
