12.01.2022 READ! A champion team is made from many talented individuals! We talk with the GVR Ownership Group and learn of their background, favourites, fears an...d fascination with Thoroughbred Racing! This week we learn from an old hand in racing, however recently-new-to-GVR! Full Name? Graham Guest Nickname? Not for publication Hometown? Adelaide Occupation? Orchid Grower Commenced Thoroughbred Ownership in? approx 1966 First Horse Owned? Radiant King - now there's a story. Dad went to the Wayville sales to buy a yearling, 50/50 with his boss. I was given a minor share off the books. The plan was to wait until the last 50 lots, and try to purchase at a bargain price. His boss got anxious and put his hand up on one they hadn't inspected, and it was knocked down without another bid, something like $500, equivalent to half a years wages back in the day On inspection, the nightmare commenced, his knees were shockers. We lived at Netley, and the stable was in the backyard. Dad worked and educated him in the sand within Adelaide Airport (no fences of consequence where we lived), gave him a heap of time, and tried every trick in the book - pin firing included. To cut a long story, one day the horse reared, flipped over backwards, and landed on him - a nice stint in QEH followed. He'd had him fit, but knew his legs wouldn't stand a campaign - A fellow local trainer, Joe (no need for further identification), a couple of weeks later eased the horse’s concerns with some natural therapies, and subsequently he won his maiden by a country mile, and emptied the Strathalbyn betting ring in the process. The horse broke down in the process, never raced again. Favourite stable horse? Being new to Gordon's stable, it has to be our first runner, Garrire. Drawn to his pedigree with Kaapstad in the dam's background. Favourite racehorse? Growing up, there were two I admired. Tobin Bronze (Cox Plates, Caulfield Cup and a stack of WFA races), and locally Alcatraz - invariable last on the turn, and would come with a barnstorming finish down the outside. Probably embellished in my memory, but a winner of 20 plus races. Most Outstanding Ownership Moment? Last year my wife Sue was fortunate having a couple of good wins with Crosshaven. (7 starts, 5 wins ) Favourite Track? Royal Ascot. I expect to see Gordon in Top Hat and Tails with one of our runners in a few years !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Superstitions? None Worst Bet Ever Made? Just a small punter, the losses don't hurt as much. What would I be doing with my money if it didn’t involve horses? Paying off the Overdraft ! My dream ownership goal? Every win is satisfying - Flemington and Randwick are special. My Other Sports Interests? Aussie Rules.
