23.01.2022 AMAZINGLY large commercial sailing ships were still carrying cargo around the world right till 1949. Competing against steamships, they operated on a shoe strin...g. Crews were the smallest ever, therefore they had to work harder than any before them. No engines, no refrigeration, no heating, and poor food were the sailor's lot. When I had a chat with Finnish born Tor Lindqvist in 2004 he was the most experienced square-rigged sailor still living. This is part one of Tor's story. Duration 26 mins. More next week. For more on the subject get my DVD, 'The Last Cape Horners'. Available from Boat Books Australia on 02 94391133 See more
22.01.2022 As it is approaching ANZAC day, a time for reflection on the sacrifices made by so many. CLARRIE HEIN and BEN AMOR were Portland's last two survivors of a Japan...ese prison camp in Ambon. Ben escaped soon after capture and was home in six weeks, Clarrie, pictured here lying in the foreground, was to endure three and a half terrible years. I spoke to them in 2003. Apologies for sound and picture quality - camera problems on the day! See more
21.01.2022 SWAN LAKE lies about thirty k's along the coast from Portland toward Nelson. Successive generations of the Johnstone family have been owners of the adjacent pro...perty since 1848. I first visited it as a small boy in 1959 and have had a fascination for the place ever since. With the cooperation of members of the Johnstone family I put this video together in 2007. See more
21.01.2022 Noel Smith sailed in the South Australian gulf trading ketches from about 1940. Many of these vessels were Tasmanian built, such as Annie Watt and One And All, ...built by Wilsons at Cygnet.Being a bush poet he put an obituary for the ketches to verse, as remembered through his minds eye. Noel is one of a number of people I interviewed for this DVD, The Trading Ketches of South Australia, in 2003. The DVD runs for 90 minutes, Noel's poem shown here, runs for three mins. 18.01.2022 In 2001 I had a chat with Jean Burgess, nee Heather. Her family operated a sawmill at beautiful Cockle Creek in the far south of Tasmania. During the war years ...with manpower in short supply Jean and her sisters helped work the mill, including falling huge trees. Timber was freighted to Hobart in the last of the sailing ketches. Duration of this clip 15 mins. The history of the ketches is told by Jean and others in my DVD, Trading Out of Hobart, available from the Maritime Museum of Tasmania on (03)62341427 See more

12.01.2022 I've been out on TACOMA again after an eight year break. This 85 foot tuna poler was built in Port Fairy by the Haldane brothers and launched in 1952. The Halda...nes pioneered the commercialisation of the South Australian tuna fishery in 1956. Now operated by the Tacoma Preservation Society she does occasional trips into the Great Australian Bight, catching tuna the old way, with pole and line. First job is to net pilchards at night to use as Burley. However the tuna were not schooling up, so no 'poling' happened, but some were caught by rod and feel, so all was not lost! We anchored at Flinders and Pearsons islands, among others. Pearsons was much used for sheltering from gales by the tuna fleet in its heyday. Star of the show and an inspiration to all for his agility and energy was the cook, 86 year old Jack Belamy who first joined the vessel at Port Fairy in 1952. Tacoma and Jack are among the many vessels and people featured in my DVD, 'Those Were The Days, a history of the bluefin tuna fishery in Australia, available from Boat Books Australia on 0294391133. 07.01.2022 SWAT team in action. The South West Woody Weeds Action Team inc is a group of volunteers dedicated to the removal of weeds from our public land, with a primary f...ocus on sweet pittosporum.Pitto is a very invasive plant that will take over our local native forest if we sit back and allow it to happen. An example of this is at Bolwarra on the edges of the highway. It is a huge task but with a lot of help and some funding we believe we can get rid of this plant. Some sections of forest is so thick it is easier to find the pitto using a horse(Maddie)and packhorse (Bewdy). At the moment we have a 2 hr working bee of a Tuesday morning then stop for a cuppa (thanks to Judy Kerr)and chat.We would like to have other crews at different times and places. If you would like to help please contact Garry Kerr 0427 829748.Please feel free to share this post to assist us in gathering more support and awareness See more

01.01.2022 I have put together nine promos of my Maritime History Series of DVD's. It has been a wonderful experience meeting all these people who, without exception, have... been happy to share their experiences and skills. From the men who sailed in the last big commercial sailing ships, to pearl divers, and tuna fishermen. Other DVD's cover the smaller trading craft which worked the Bass Strait islands and South Australian gulfs. A particular fascination of mine are the stories of the men who logged Huon pine in the wild rivers of Western Tasmania. They have all been a joy to do, and in the process I have learned so much.
