24.01.2022 I have to say one of the more enjoyable aspects of campaigning is getting out and letterboxing (in our 2 hours) in Ashburton and Glen Iris. Besides bumping into many ‘masked’ familiar faces, it is wonderful to see the suburb in all its Spring glory. This front garden in Nicholas St is perfect with its Indigenous layered planting. Ticks many boxes for me. Authorised G Thompson, 466 Malvern Rd Prahran 3181... #Councillor #garrythompson #solwayward #ashburton #gleniris See more

19.01.2022 I am truly honoured and humbled to be elected Mayor of the City of Boroondara by my colleagues tonight. I am encouraged by the conversations I have had with fellow Councillors and believe we have the makings of a great Council with many new ideas and bold visions for our community. This new council will not just be both forward focused and community focused, it will be one that is strategic at a time that our community needs it most. All bodes well for Boroondara over thi...s next four years. Deputy Mayor Cr Watson, Planning Chair Cr Parke and Services Chair Cr Addis collectively in their positions bring experience and a balanced perspective to our Council. GT

18.01.2022 Meet Scout, our 3 year old border collie. She just loves chasing the ball at Hartwell Sports Ground, along with every other dog and owner I know (ATM!). Like all border collies she is relentless, especially on evenings like tonight. @scout.bordercollie loves introducing herself to everyone, and has amassed an Instagram following of well over 1000. She left me behind within a couple of weeks! . #dogswin #dogsofboroondara #boroondara #solwayward

18.01.2022 The Future of Boroondara’s Trees. I took this photo this morning along the Ferndale Trail. It reminds me that over the coming years, both Council and the Community will be faced with the challenge of the progressive renewal of our aging municipal trees, whilst looking to increase our tree canopy coverage across the municipality. Everyone recognizes our leafy streets is what we love about where we live and to ensure that it remains that way for future generations, we need to... create a considered path forward strategically and sustainably for our community. This will be a challenge without doubt and will need careful planning and community engagement. The next Council Term we need to start planning for this change which will occur over the coming decades. It will provide many opportunities to look at the types of trees, their climate resilience, diversity and coverage. I am looking forward to this challenge, which is one of many we share with the community, as we plan for our urban environment to be more resilient to a changing climate. As an urban designer I have always said, if we can create a forest in a city so that the community grows to recognize they are living within a forest, we have all taken great steps to addressing the micro-climatic effects of urban heat islands and many other ecological and environmental challenges facing an urbanized environment. We all need to play a part to achieve that vision. From this month’s Boroondara Bulletin: Our municipal trees are an integral and highly valued part of Boroondara’s natural and designed heritage. With more than 100,000 street and park trees, we need to ensure we can manage their health and safety now and in future, for the benefit of our community and the environment. Over 75 per cent of our trees are now mature, with many planted during the inter-war period between 1920 and 1940, when housing developments were expanding and nature strip trees became common features. With some trees entering into the decline phase of their lifespan, and in many cases, having outgrown their planting sites, we need to manage their risk and plan for their progressive renewal through removal and replacement. Our older trees are also more prone to the increased stresses caused by changes in our urban environment and warming climate. The impacts on trees, like mandatory pruning to meet electric line clearance obligations, or damage to roots during works on essential services (gas, water, communication and other underground services), pose major risks for the health of the tree. We are working to tighten protection conditions surrounding our trees to limit any impact during infrastructure work by external service providers and our own. 14.01.2022 Solway Ward - Resident profile: Brigadier Geoff Christopherson AM and Leonie Christopherson AM. Glen Iris residents Geoff and Leonie have led a remarkable life, full of adventure, travel and community service. ... Leonie married into army life at just 20 when she wed Geoff, whose army service took them to 20 different locations in five different countries. The two also lived in several cities in Australia before settling permanently in Glen Iris in the 1980s with their three sons. Having spent so many years living in rentals or married quarters, finally having a home of their own in Boroondara was life-changing. I felt like a snail who had at last found it’s right shell instead of being a hermit crab in someone else’s home - it was heaven!, says Leonie. Throughout their lives Geoff and Leonie have been passionate about participating in community life and making a difference. So much so, that they have both been awarded Members of the Order of Australia honours for their contributions. You cannot complain about anything in this country if you’re not prepared to help bring about change. Whinging from the sidelines is not an option, says Leonie. With this in mind, Leonie joined the National Council of Women (later rising to the ranks of president) - an advocacy group that encourages the participation of women in all aspects of community life. Locally, Leonie has played important roles in the foundation of the Boroondara Writer’s Group, and has even held the position of Chairman of the Ashburton Community Centre. The couple has also participated in many other community initiatives including Neighbourhood Watch and the Friends of Gardiner’s Creek. For Geoff, supporting fellow soldiers through his local RSL is a cause very important to him. Since 1989 he has held various roles at the East Malvern RSL, all focussing on the welfare of veterans. He regularly visits RSL members and their dependents in hospital or in aged care facilities, and the issue of veteran welfare is a something that is very close to his heart. The age of our ex-servicemen and their families, particularly the WWII and Vietnam veterans, is getting rapidly older, so their needs are more pressing, says Geoff. At the same time our resources in terms of trained welfare and pension officers is diminishing, and it’s for this reason I’m inspired to do everything I can to help my fellow veterans, he said. The now long-term residents of Boroondara have remained in the same home they first bought in Glen Iris in 1975, with no plans of moving. We couldn’t have chosen a better spot - close to transport, easy access to the city, gorgeous parks and trees, so many friends and neighbours close by and within walking distance to Ashburton’s charming village shops. What more could you possibly want? laughs Leonie. #SolwayWard #Newsletter #April2018 #ResidentProfile #Councillor #GarryThompson #GlenIris #Ashburton

13.01.2022 Urgent Business. Tonight, Council passed an Item of Urgent Business to call upon the State and Federal Government to provide additional support to our local businesses here in Boroondara. In particular to provide financial measures to support our small businesses, our sole traders, our mum and dad businesses who are all financially impacted by this Pandemic, in particular through this second wave. Unfortunately, this was not supported by all Councillors, with one Councillor ...voting against this, but it ultimately passed 9/1. Our mum and dad businesses and sole traders have been the forgotten casualty of this pandemic, together with many of our small businesses who are dreading the imminent reduction in JobKeeper. We trust our call upon the State Government and the Federal Government to provide further economic responses to our small businesses will be recognised, they are the backbone of economic development in Boroondara. Council’s motion. MOTION Services Delegated Committee 14 September 2020 That the City of Boroondara: 1. Write to the Premier, the Hon Daniel Andrews MP, the Treasurer and the Hon Tim Pallas MP, acknowledging the government’s additional relief measures to support Victorian businesses, but calling on the government to: a. Waive (rather than defer) all payroll tax for the 2020/21 financial year, for all employers with a payroll less than $10 million; and b. Expand the business support fund by making an additional grant of $10,000 for employing businesses in metropolitan Melbourne. 2. Send a copy of the letter to the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Michael O’Brien MP, other parliamentary party leaders and all members of State Parliament representing residents of Boroondara. 3. Write to the Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP and the Treasurer, the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, advocating for a special extension for Victorian businesses, of the present JobKeeper payment levels of $1,500 per fortnight per eligible employee, until 31 December 2020. #Councillor #GarryThompson #GlenIris #Ashburton #SolwayWard #SmallBusiness #SoleTraders #fightforfair Authorised G Thompson, 466 Malvern Road, Prahran 3181.

10.01.2022 Ashburton’s Urban Forest? Yes or No A few weeks ago, I posted on our the health of our municipal trees, increasing tree canopy and biodiversity areas. From that post I have received a number of calls from the community about opportunities in our area to create larger sections of biodiversity planting and natural environments. Residents in Nicholas Street and Ashburn Gve (corrected) have spoken about the opportunity to reconsider the Anniversary Trail south of Alamein Stat...ion. I never like looking to Stonnington for examples, but alas today my second post. The Urban Forest in East Ward, just south of the Trail is located on the extension of the original outer circle railway line that the current Anniversary Trail follows. This original rail land has been transformed into a biodiversity rich lineal park, with periodic picnic tables. I’m interested in your thoughts here, I think it is a great initiative in some form and worthy of investigating with the new Council in the next Council Term. The land is VicTrack land managed by Council. Please comment. Yes or No, Yay or Nay! 08.01.2022 Today nominations closed for the Boroondara Council Elections. Three long standing Councillors who have collectively served the citizens of Boroondara for nearly 53 years between them, have not nominated to stand. Ward, 5 times Mayor, the most of any Councillor in the City of Boroondara. Cr Philip Healey - Elected in 2004 in Studley Ward, 2 times Mayor. 07.01.2022 Congratulations Stonnington City Council for the adoption of the Gardiners (KooyongKoot) Creek Master Plan at your Council Meeting in September. Here in Boroondara City Council, I was pleased to move and have passed by my colleagues a resolution that Boroondara will commence discussion with Stonnington to see both sides of Gardiners Creek seamlessly integrating to create a common experience for those who use the trail into the city. We met with the Mayor of Stonnington and ...fellow Councillors with the shared common interest in Gardiners Creek a short while ago and our ball is now rolling. Gardiners Creek and its open space surrounds are a vital asset for the communities of both municipalities. Over the last 7 months we have seen an exponential growth in the use of this precinct to support our health and well-being. It is vitally important that this asset, Gardiners Creek, is enhanced jointly, redeveloped and seamlessly integrated for the benefit of all of our community and future generations to come. In the next Council Term, I look forward to continuing to work with Councillors bordering Stonnington along Gardiners Creek, and Council permitting establishing a Boroondara Gardiners Creek Masterplan Committee comprising Councillors and community representatives and delivering a fantastic outcome for the Boroondara Community. There is much work to do and to consider, including biodiversity, lighting, signage, pollution control measures, budgets and program of works. Congratulations Stonnington. Time for us to jointly advocate for more attention to Gardiners Creek from Monash and Whitehorse Councils. It will take all four Councils to commit to a cleaner and more natural waterway. 03.01.2022 I'm beyond stoked. Today, the Victorian Legislative Council, including the Government and the Opposition, voted in favour of my Motion and committed to underta...ke this Inquiry into Victoria's planning system and the protection of heritage. Both parties have conceded in the Chamber that the current system is inadequate and it is time for change! As Deputy Chair of the Planning and Environment Committee, I can't wait to investigate this issue further and make much needed improvements. I can't thank those who have supported this Motion enough. To everybody who wrote to MPs - thank you! The Inquiry will investigate: - The high cost of housing, including but not limited to (a) provision of social housing; (b) access for first home buyers; (c) the cost of rental accommodation; (d) population policy, state and local; (e) factors encouraging housing as an investment vehicle; (f) mandatory affordable housing in new housing developments. - Environmental sustainability and vegetation protection. - Delivering certainty and fairness in planning decisions for communities, including but not limited to: (a) mandatory height limits and minimum apartment sizes; (b) protecting Green Wedges and the urban growth boundary; (c) community concerns about VCAT appeal processes; (d) protecting third party appeal rights; (e) the role of Ministerial call-ins; - Protecting heritage in Victoria, including but not limited to (a) the adequacy of current criteria and processes for heritage protection; (b) possible federal involvement in heritage protection; (c) separating heritage protection from the planning administration; (d) establishing a heritage tribunal to hear heritage appeals; (e) the appointment of independent local and state heritage advisers; (f) the role of Councils in heritage protection; (g) penalties for illegal demolitions and tree removals; - Ensuring residential zones are delivering the type of housing that communities want. - Any other matter the Committee considers relevant.
