24.01.2022 SWAT team in action. The South West Woody Weeds Action Team inc is a group of volunteers dedicated to the removal of weeds from our public land, with a primary f...ocus on sweet pittosporum.Pitto is a very invasive plant that will take over our local native forest if we sit back and allow it to happen. An example of this is at Bolwarra on the edges of the highway. It is a huge task but with a lot of help and some funding we believe we can get rid of this plant. Some sections of forest is so thick it is easier to find the pitto using a horse(Maddie)and packhorse (Bewdy). At the moment we have a 2 hr working bee of a Tuesday morning then stop for a cuppa (thanks to Judy Kerr)and chat.We would like to have other crews at different times and places. If you would like to help please contact Garry Kerr 0427 829748.Please feel free to share this post to assist us in gathering more support and awareness See more

23.01.2022 CAPE BRIDGEWATER, A SOCIAL HISTORY documentary DVD was launched last evening, Councillor Geoff White kindly doing the honours. Below is a nine minute promo, (a ...random collection of clips) total length is 100 mins. 25 local faces appear in it, some for a short time, some for a longer time, and sadly three are no longer with us. They share their memories with us, some dating back to the 1930's, of what it was like to live, work and play at Bridgewater before it became a fashionable 'sea-change'. Available from Portland Books & Gifts 116 Percy St. 55235433 or The Paper Nautilus Bookshop 65 Bentinck St. 55235454 Click on the picture to view... See more

23.01.2022 SWAN LAKE lies about thirty k's along the coast from Portland toward Nelson. Successive generations of the Johnstone family have been owners of the adjacent pro...perty since 1848. I first visited it as a small boy in 1959 and have had a fascination for the place ever since. With the cooperation of members of the Johnstone family I put this video together in 2007. See more

21.01.2022 As it is approaching ANZAC day, a time for reflection on the sacrifices made by so many. CLARRIE HEIN and BEN AMOR were Portland's last two survivors of a Japan...ese prison camp in Ambon. Ben escaped soon after capture and was home in six weeks, Clarrie, pictured here lying in the foreground, was to endure three and a half terrible years. I spoke to them in 2003. Apologies for sound and picture quality - camera problems on the day! See more

19.01.2022 THE FOREST NEEDS OUR HELP, it is being progressively invaded by that attractive leafy tree, sweet pittosporum. Its spreading branches block out light and absorb... nutrients, depriving under-storey plants of life. This in turn impacts on all creatures which inhabit the forest and roadsides. Sweet pittosporum creeps up on us, most of us don't even realise it is there till it is pointed out. Through lack of proper funding of our departments the war on pittosporum is currently being lost. We, the South West Woody Weeds Action Team (SWAT) need to enlist members to help publicise, educate, lobby, map, advocate and eradicate this pest. Volunteer satisfaction is guaranteed. Please take three minutes to watch this video clip. See more

14.01.2022 I have put together nine promos of my Maritime History Series of DVD's. It has been a wonderful experience meeting all these people who, without exception, have... been happy to share their experiences and skills. From the men who sailed in the last big commercial sailing ships, to pearl divers, and tuna fishermen. Other DVD's cover the smaller trading craft which worked the Bass Strait islands and South Australian gulfs. A particular fascination of mine are the stories of the men who logged Huon pine in the wild rivers of Western Tasmania. They have all been a joy to do, and in the process I have learned so much. 12.01.2022 Third generation fisherman Leonard 'Dugga' Beazley and his cousin Bill were the last of the true PORT MELBOURNE FISHERMEN. Dugga was forced in to early retirement at age 75 by Government commercial fishing licence buy-backs. I interviewed Dugga in December 2016.

10.01.2022 It's that time again - off to the biennial Tasmanian Wooden Boat Festival, the largest show of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. A very social three days! We... are cruising to Hobart in 'Jane Kerr' via the Bass Strait islands and the east coast. Armed with three recreational craypots and fishing gear we hope to keep ourselves in crays, abs and flathead. I thought it appropriate to post a short wooden boat excerp from my DVD, Crayfishing Around Tasmania. This DVD is available from the Maritime Museum of Tasmania, or Boat Books Australia on 02 94391133 or by clicking on this link https://www.boatbooks-aust.com.au//crayfishing-around-tas/ See more

04.01.2022 The women were the unsung heros of the bush, of which my mother was one. In 2011 I decided to acknowledge this by producing a DVD with six local country women a...ptly titled, 'The Women's Story'. For this we re-enacted a country dance set in 1948 at the old Mount Richmond school. This is an eleven minute edit of the evening. The 70 minute DVD can be bought from Portland Books & Gifts 116 Percy St 55235433, or The Paper Nautilus Bookshop 65 Bentinck St Portland 55235454. See more
