14.01.2022 The ‘Edgar paper’, which claimed that Australia’s commercial fish-stocks have declined by a third over the last 10 years, has been debunked. SIA’s initial resp...onse to the ‘Edgar paper’ and the questions we, as an industry, raised regarding the validity of the data presented have been substantiated. Little et al. note significant problems with the Edgar’s methodology and also highlight factual errors within the 2018 paper. See more

06.01.2022 Excellent radio interview with Grant Barker, a Director of Northern Wildcatch Seafood Australia in Darwin, explaining how Aussie seafood is in hot, hot demand... for this Australia day long-weekend. Matt Brann from NT Country Hour was part of the action this morning as seafood (caught from the West Aussie waters - 400 miles west of Darwin) was unloaded at the Duck Pond marina in Darwin. As one example, the crew from Megan M. unloaded 17 tonnes of fish including 14-15 tonne of gold band snapper, saddletail snapper, red emperor and cod. Most of this fish will go to Brisbane and will be distributed up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Grant said that catches have been good this year with fish being active. This is due to the fishery being well managed with stock looked after.

06.01.2022 ANIMAL WELFARE CONCERNS ON PILBARA CATTLE STATION A station in the Pilbara is being investigated by the department of primary industries' Livestock Compliance U...nit after an animal welfare report was made. A number of cattle in poor condition have been humanely destroyed where needed. The ABC hasn't been able to confirm the extent so far. Aerial and on-ground activity is underway on the station to take a look at the immediate welfare of cattle, and a management plan is being developed to improve access to food and water. This comes about a month after reports of up to 1,000 cattle deaths at Noonkanbah Station in the Kimberley, when access to water was restricted during a number hot days around Christmas. Chair of the Kimberley Pilbara Cattleman's Association, David Stoate, says the hot, dry summer has made things difficult but there is no excuse for pastoralists to neglect their stock. "It's obviously not something the [cattle] industry wants to see happen ever again, really," he said. "The Association is keen to work with Government on finding solutions. "Some of them could be a best management practice program that incentivises pastoralists to look after the Rangelands and has an animal welfare component."
