25.01.2022 The Shops at Christmas In 1907 the local paper reported on 30 Burra shops at Christmas time, here are photographs and captions for just ten of them with the sam...e location taken today. The report from 18 December 1907 began with the following: Business people in the town are busy unpacking for the Christmas season, and the display of good this year will be better than ever before witnessed in the town. A glance at the following will give one some idea of what can be bought during the festive season. All old photographs are archived at the Burra Community Library. See more

21.01.2022 We are getting more and more excited about the upcoming AGLRallySA - Rally of the Heartland Not only are entries at an all time high (more on that later) but t...hings are falling into place nicely. Today, our new updated 2021 event poster has been released. It features last years winners STUART BOWES/MARK NELSON in their 1975 Mercedes 450SLC 5.0L, and we love the clean uncluttered design, with its new treatment. The poster is based on a photo by Victorian photographer and rally tragic JOHN DOUTCH, who has applied various mysterious processes to achieve that intriguing, and to us, attractive design. Thanks John Doutch , muchly appreciated The beautifully presented Mercedes was built and is maintained by Garry Kirk Motorsport. It will be super interesting to see if Stuart and Mark can defend their title If you can help with distribution in the mid north, please let me know Want one for your garage/office/home? Let me know, and I will send you one If you can help with distribution, please pm me Regional Council of Goyder, Barb Button, Wayne Tomsen,, Burra Camping and Caravan Park; Hallett Country Store

12.01.2022 There are plenty of myths out there about the COVID-19 vaccines Here are the facts! The COVID-19 vaccines are safe despite being developed quickly, and here ...is why: All available resources and efforts have been directed towards finding an effective vaccine, due to the urgency of protecting people from the COVID-19 virus. Unprecedented levels of funding and collaboration between vaccine developers and governments around the world. Technology has evolved to make vaccine development faster than in the past. New technology has allowed researchers to quickly identify the genetic code of the COVID-19 virus, soon after the virus emerged. Clinical trials progress more quickly if a disease is widespread, which is the case for COVID-19. Researchers can evaluate the effect of a vaccine between the unvaccinated and vaccinated groups much sooner than for a rare disease. For more information, please visit: https://bit.ly/3s0eFN9

09.01.2022 South Australia's History Festival 1-30 May 2021 Change in Burra NATIONAL BANK Market Street, Burra The National Bank of Australia established a branch elsewher...e in Burra in April 1859. Tenders for this building were called in July 1861 and the building was completed the following year to the design of Edmund W. Wright, architect of Adelaide. It replaced several smaller buildings one of which had been a butcher’s shop. It comprised banking chambers and the manager’s residence with a private entrance in Mount Pleasant Road. At the time it was the most impressive building in the town. The National Bank was the first bank to be opened in the town and bought to an end a period when money orders were relied upon as a means of exchange. In 2015 it was the only bank building in Burra to be used for its original purpose. The first branch manager was Mr R. G. Prole and the last resident manager Mr S. Draper who left in 2001. The bank closed in August 2018 and thus far the building has not been used for any other purpose. Perhaps someone can tell us who owns the building and what plans there are for its use. See more

02.01.2022 The advertising sign for Oates Ltd in Market Square has recently been revealed. It probably dates from 1957 but by mid 1960 the firm had taken up the shop on the left also. Can anyone help with a photo of Oates Ltd in the late 1950s when it occupied the shop on the right?
