25.01.2022 Don’t let your holiday go up in smoke this Christmas. Follow some simple steps to ensure you’re safe when caravanning these school holidays: - Make sure you hav...e the right safety equipment, such as a photoelectric smoke alarm with a hush button, a fire blanket and a fire extinguisher. - Do not use portable gas cooking appliances inside your caravan. - Always check for gas leaks using soapy water around joints prior to use. - Never leave cooking unattended. - Be extremely careful when cooking with oil and never use water to put out fat or oil fires. - Turn off gas cylinders while the caravan is being towed, the campervan engine is on and before going to bed. - If a fire does start, leave your caravan, stay outside and call Triple Zero (000) immediately. 24.01.2022 A potential tragedy was averted last week by a Gas Work Licence Holder who identified an unflued gas powered log fire and six burner barbeque installed in the living area of a domestic residence when called to service a log fire. Fatalities caused by carbon monoxide poisoning can occur in these situations. The Gas Work Licence holder made the situation safe by disconnecting and plugging off the appliances, issuing a Defect Notice and bringing the matter to the attention of the Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate. An investigation into the gas installation has commenced.

23.01.2022 Our Senior Petroleum & Gas Inspector, Dan De Clara, was at Caboolture today inspecting the installation of an LPG tank. It is vital that all LPG tanks and cylinders are protected from the impact of vehicles. This is a requirement of Australian Standard 1596 and called up under the P&G Act to keep people safe from the potential of a gas explosion or uncontrolled release of the LPG if it were hit by a vehicle.

20.01.2022 This Bosch 16H hot water system was found under a house in Clermont. Several compliance issues were identified: 1. HWS not installed to manufacturers instructions (MU). MU states that the HWS must be on an external wall. 2. Flue less than 200 mm under a combustible surface 3. Pipework not supported and restrained.... 4. 9 kg cylinder too small for the gas system (also has 2 gas appliances upstairs about 200 MJ/h total) 5. Cylinders installed under the house on a timber base (must be non-combustible) 6. Cylinders not protected from vehicle impact. A compliance direction was issued and the gas system has since been rectified. Note: the electric HWS is the primary HWS with the gas being a backup in the event of loss of power See more

20.01.2022 In Queensland, anyone carrying out gas work must have the appropriate gas work licence or gas work authorisation. Not all licence and authorisation holders are allowed to perform all types of gas work. Check our registers to make sure a gas licence or authorisation is current and that it covers the work to be performed. The registers are updated monthly. Visit https://bit.ly/2VhzwhG

19.01.2022 Now that camping sites are open again, its important to remember to be #gassafe when you set up camp. Butane cookers are convenient but they can be dangerous. Portable gas stoves should always be used in a ventilated space, away from high heat and naked flames. Unless specified by the manufacturer, dont use pots or pans larger than 200mm. When the pot is too big, it concentrates the heat down toward the gas canister, which may cause it to overheat and explode! Avoid putting your family, friends and self at risk. Play it safe.

16.01.2022 Recent P&G inspections of excavations during gas pipeline repairs in the Surat Basin have identified a number of issues that need to be addressed by gas network operators. Trenching and excavating are required for activities by gas fitters and gas network operators. Hazards present during excavations include: cave-ins falling loads hazardous atmospheres mobile equipment... hitting other services. Operators and individuals must ensure that control measures are in place prior to breaking ground. This includes dial before you dig, trench shoring, benching/battering, atmospheric monitoring and emergency plans. Unannounced inspections on excavations will continue by P&G inspectors. See more

16.01.2022 Butane cookers are a great appliance to use when travelling through Queensland, but they can be dangerous too. Portable gas stoves should always be used outdoors and away from high heat (such as campfires and BBQs) and naked flames. Butane lunchbox cookers might be convenient, but theyre deadly if used incorrectly.

14.01.2022 Petroleum & Gas Inspectors, Tony Willis and Michael Scott doing well inspections out on the Santos Scotia field in February. The inspection activities form part of the Inspectorates yearly compliance assurance program.

13.01.2022 The safety of our workers and the communities they operate in is a priority. For those essential activities that require our people to continue to operate, we ensure procedures are in place that comply with the Queensland Health directives regarding hygiene and social distancing. Learning to adapt to these new environments is key to being able to continue our essential activities, such as petroleum and gas inspections. Prior to conducting an inspection, our Inspectors liaise closely with stakeholders to ensure they are aware of our visits and have agreed on the control measures to be used. While stringently following these measures, last week some of our Inspectors conducted well inspections in the Moranbah area.

13.01.2022 Our inspectors are working closely with the resources companies to implement additional #covid-19 safety measures to help keep our resources workers, their families and the communities they operate within safe. A recent visit to Savanna Energy rig showed the crew and workers have implemented a range of precautions such as social distancing, hand sanitation, personnel restrictions for inside spaces, including vehicles, and signage. We all have an important role in slowing the spread of COVID-19. Follow Queensland Health to stay up to date with the latest COVID-19 advice. 10.01.2022 As the COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease in Queensland, its important that hospitality businesses ensure their premises are safe to reopen to the public. Gas appliances that have been turned off for long periods of time, may be adversely affected. Especially where kitchens have been deep cleaned or where other trades have been in to conduct building maintenance or decorating. If you are having trouble getting your appliance to work, dont attempt a repair as you may increase risk of a gas leak. Contact a gas work licence holder to service and repair any faulty gas appliances. https://bit.ly/2LqRokb

10.01.2022 We recently had an enquiry from a real estate property manager who had concerns with a HWS installation. The original gas installation compliant state was affected by the installation of an air conditioning unit. The Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate and Electrical Safety Office, work closely together to get the right safety messaging out to installers and take appropriate compliance action when required.

09.01.2022 From midday today, Monday 1 June 2020, Queensland is opening up for Queenslanders! With more restrictions lifted, you can now travel and stay anywhere in the State for as many nights as you like (except restricted areas). Weve also made it easier to catch up with family and friends and support Queensland businesses. ... These new changes are only possible because Queenslanders have done a great job in flattening the curve and preventing the spread of COVID-19. But remember, we all still need to practise social distancing, wash our hands and avoid unnecessary contact. Check out the updated roadmap: https://bit.ly/2zxuyoR

09.01.2022 Today we celebrate Queensland Day. Officially, Queensland Day is a celebration of Queenslands birthday and marks the State's official separation from New South Wales as an independent colony on 6 June 1859. This year we also think its a perfect time for us to stop, reflect and say thanks to those Queenslanders who have helped us through these challenging timesour health workers, teachers and emergency service providers, our Care Army, shop assistants and transport operators, our neighbours, family and friends. What are you thankful for this Queensland Day?

08.01.2022 Lest we forget.

08.01.2022 A recent site visit by our Petroleum and Gas Inspectors in the Moranbah area identified several CSG wells that were not on the Operator system and therefore have gone uninspected for a number of years. The well was constructed in the late 1980s and observations included flange joints missing bolts, faded signage, no hazard warning signage, corrosion issues, build-up of vegetation and un-capped isolation valve. The operating company is working on action plan with the Department to address the observations made on these wells.

07.01.2022 The P&G Inspectorate followed up on a complaint this week by a tenant at a rental property in Mackay. One of our Senior Inspectors inspected the installation and several non-compliance issues were identified. A 9kg gas cylinder not installed as per the Australian Standards, open end on one of the pigtails and no identification tag on the proprietary gas system used on the installation. Another example of what not to do!

06.01.2022 Licensed gas work is about more than a piece of paper its about being professional, upholding the standards of the industry and providing quality service. Unlicensed gas work is identified by the P&G Inspectorate through random inspections at building sites, notifications by other gas fitters and complaints by concerned members of the public The main excuses? I didnt realise my licence had expired I am too busy to renew my licence... I did not realise that the work required a gas licence None of these fly. Its your responsibility to keep customers and the community safe. Visit https://bit.ly/3bDLM1q to make sure you dont ever have to make an excuse. See more

04.01.2022 A recent P&G inspection in the Mackay area identified this gas installation. For a start, there is no heat proofing behind the flue of the instantaneous hot water system, despite being a requirement in the manufacturers installation instructions. Secondly, the cylinder and regulator must be located in such a way to allow any fluid to flow back to the cylinder, clearly not the case in the photograph! And lastly, a plastic crate has been screwed to the wall to hold the gas cylinder, which does not provide a firm level non-combustible base. A great example of what not to do!
