25.01.2022 Gateway Providores would like to give everyone a current market update on Beef and Lamb prices. With reduction in numbers on both beef and lamb we have seen prices gradually go up over the past 12 months and sometimes spike. Increased export demand and rain off the back of a long drought, the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) and the National Trade Lamb Indicator (NTLI)are both sitting at all time record highs. The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) is the general ben...chmark of Australian Cattle prices. The indicator is a seven day rolling average produced by MLAs National Livestock Reporting Service (NLRS). The results include cattle purchased for slaughter, restocking or lot feeding and are expressed in cents per kilogram carcass (dressed) weight (c/kg cwt). This does not include all costs associated from saleyards, abattoirs, wholesale or retail. The EYCI is currently sitting at 660.50c/kg which is an all time record (0.93c/kg increase in under a month), 127.00c/kg higher than the same period last year and a staggering 317.00c/kg higher than 2014 (almost doubled). Two month ago industry experts were predicting that it may hit over 600c/kg mark but the current level is a major concern for all involved in the industry. The NTLI indicates trade lamb is currently at 643c/kg (7% increase on the same time last year), an all time high. The surge in lamb prices are continuing as evidenced by the high value. Late much needed rain has been welcomed across the state but has been the driving factor behind the price increases (source MLA). We hope this information provided assists you plan for the immediate future.

20.01.2022 MLA Beef Projection 2015 After experiencing unprecedented turn-off (slaughter and live exports) in 2014, the Australian cattle industry is likely to see significant adjustments over the coming years.... The high turn-off has had a dramatic impact on the national herd, estimated to have declined from a 35 year high to a two decade low, in the space of just 24 months. The flow-on effects from this are likely to last for the duration of the projection period (2020), impacting available supplies, while at the same time, testing market willingness to compete for limited product. While the decline in 2015 is dramatic, putting the volumes into context, production levels are anticipated to be in line with the 10 year average. Regardless, having come from such supply highs, an adjustment across the supply chain is inevitable, having a range of consequences, including how cattle and boxed beef will be balanced between new and existing customers. This will be the case again in 2016 when further supply shortages are expected. Indicative beef export prices during 2014 were at record highs, and are forecast to remain strong over the coming 12 months given current low US beef production and strong global demand, assisted by a devaluing A$. This suggests that as Australian supplies are likely to decline over the coming 24 months, there will be potential for farm gate prices to lift. This has been exemplified by the recent sudden jump in prices, following widespread rainfall over the Christmas period. Given the strength of the US market in particular, and under the assumption of tighter Australian beef production, an export market realignment is anticipated, with a greater proportion of exports trending back toward the larger, traditional markets of the US, Japan and Korea. The domestic market looks likely to remain under pressure. On the live export front, demand is likely to remain robust, with the live trade continuing to contribute an important portion of turn-off. With fewer cattle available, and assuming uninterrupted market access, the South East Asian markets, in particular Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia, should continue dominating the trade for both feeder and slaughter cattle. One of the key assumptions forming the basis of the 2015 cattle industry projections is that Australia will phase out of drought over the coming 12 months, with a greater proportion of production and exports to occur in the first half of the year, before easing in the final quarters. With this as a key assumption, and given the heavy influence seasonal conditions play on the Australian beef supply situation. See more

18.01.2022 With only four weeks remaining until livestock markets effectively conclude for 2012, there appears to be a very limited likelihood of an upswing in prices for both lambs and cattle FOODSERVICE SECTOR Most outlets described themselves as doing OK indicating that the majority of foodservice outlets are in a stable state. Yet, some suffered less healthy conditions that contributed to slower sales. Poultry continued to be the most served meat in the Australian foodservice sect...or (86.5kg/outlet per week), followed by beef (64.8kg/outlet per week), lamb (26.8kg/outlet per week) and pork (34kg/outlet per week). Momentum in 'Brand Angus' The achievement of Angus bulls in topping national herd bull price statistics this year for the first time represents the culmination of a decade-long program to elevate the breed into a position of greater market strength. Where only five or six years ago, Angus bulls were statistically among the cheapest on the market among the six or seven most popular breed options used in the Australian beef industry, they are now amongst the most expensive.

06.01.2022 The driving force behind record Aussie beef prices for export is the large shortage of cattle in America. The Article refers to USA cattle numbers and prediction of recovery time frames. Expansion of the nations cow herd likely will not occur in 2015 as record low cattle supplies force producers to decide between cashing in on high-priced heifer sales to feedlots and retaining heifers for income years down the road, USDA said in its Dairy, Livestock and Poultry Report....Continue reading

01.01.2022 As you are all aware, the AUD and the export market dictates the domestic pricing for all meat products. With the current export markets booming all across the world, we are starting to see the affects of these trends through prices rising across the industry. Below is a snippet out of the AMIC (Australian Meat Industry Council) newsletter from May 2013 showing the record amounts of Australian meat being exported to Korea, USA and Indonesia with lamb being in extremely high ...demand. Australia shipped 103,207 tonnes of beef in the month of May, a record for any month and the first time 100,000 tonnes has been exceeded in any one month. Lamb exports also topped 19,964 tonnes, similarly a record level for any month. Recent dry conditions, deteriorating pasture and falling prices have led to record kills in Queensland in particular. Beef shipments to Indonesia at 3,615 tonnes were the largest monthly total since October 2011. China continues to grow taking 11,486 tonnes in May and over 82,000 tonnes in the last 12 months. On the lamb front China was the largest single country market at 3,541 tonnes for the month, just ahead of the United States at 3,275 tonnes. .
