25.01.2022 What if your bench press activations aren’t working? Activating and priming key shoulder stabilisers for the bench press is a GREAT strategy, but what if it doesn’t work? Is it ok to release or inhibit things BEFORE we activate or facilitate the stabilisers? 22.01.2022 Now, there are a number of potential talking points here but lets just see if we can tease out the fundamentals for the majority of people... It takes A LOT for carbs to actually turn into fat. When you add lots of carbs and lots of fats, likely fat burning may be "turned off". You can magically control this by monitoring total energy intake - amazing but true. ... Exercising with intent and effort will actually use carbohydrates. Again, it's like magic! So, to sum up these 3 points....train hard, fuel that with carbs and monitor fat intake. It ALMOST sounds like a fat loss strategy....

20.01.2022 Top of the list of strength and conditioning principles is SPECIFITY, and that is exactly what the focus is now for some of the #healthandperformance powerlifting team. . Specificity applies not just to the training, but both the COMPETITION AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT. The physical work has been done, from here on in it's simply honing skills for the next 3 weeks. . But while the physical work is almost complete, the psychological work is still yet to peak. Performing in... competition is a very different animal to performing in training, chiefly down to pressure, expectation and mental/emotional demands that increase when something is riding on how well you perform. . This creates a very different psychological demand. . Over the coming weeks I'll be sharing some of the principles and methods I am utilising to prepare the team psychologically. But to start with, this week we are intent on re-creating the competition environment. . Utilising EXACT competition day rules, timing, refereeing calls, and noise levels will start to expose the athletes to the stresses they will face in 3 weeks.With this exposure comes a level of adaptation, and ultimately resilience to the increased stress of competition day. . 18.01.2022 A little squatting action of my own from this weekend... . 4 doubles, this at 270kg moving at a velocity of 80% max. Followed with a heavier single at 290kg which turned out to be at 87%. 17.01.2022 First ZeroW Mackay workout! . Vid 1 - Top squat single of 300kg, after a double and single at 275kg and 285kg. . Vid 2 - 4 sets of paused deadlift doubles at 240kg.... . Pretty happy with the squats today - I was definitely feeling nervous with both this being only the 3rd wrapped session of this prep and also not having squatted more than 225kg for 3 weeks! #life . 17.01.2022 >>> STIMULUS:FATIGUE RATIO <<< . Feeling under the weather, but not quite "sick" yet? . Still want to get SOME training in rather than take a day completely off? ... . One option is to choose a similar movement that gives a LITTLE less stimulus but also offers a LOT less fatigue. . Which is why I used the belt squat instead of back squatting today. . AND I have a slight SIJ tweak that does not like axial loading at the moment. . Obviously less stimulus/practice for the upper body and bracing. But still a very high stimulus for the lower body. (Trust me, it was!) . This way, there's still a good training stimulus, but considerably less systemic fatigue to make sure your workout isn't the last straw that keeps you out of action for longer than necessary. . This is the first of 3 canvases that my wife (an artist) has been asked to produce for a client in the U.S. Right now, she's simply putting together some line work, experimenting with some base colours and so on. . That is, she's laying foundations, getting direction and initiating processes. . And that's you in your first few weeks of a "deficit". Simply laying foundations - upregulating levels of things such as hormone sensitive lipase to help mobilise fat stores. . Upregulating the enzymatic machinery to improve beta oxidation, so you can actually metabolise the fat you've just mobilised into the blood stream. . And that is barely scratching the surface. 12.01.2022 >>> THE BODY NEVER LIES! <<< A great indicator of instability in the lower body is the alignment of the #achilles tendon relative to the rest of the foot, as well as individual foot placement in the sagittal plane. . So when an ultra trail runner presents with peroneal, tibialis anterior, hamstring, glute and QL pain on the right side, these Achilles are a great clue! ... . INSTEAD OF addressing soft tissue pain with dry needling or other manual techniques, the cause in this case was elevation of the right ilium, with external rotation on the left side of the rib cage. . Re-positioning the pelvis and rib cage via 3 simple movements fixed the problem! . Picture 1 - before. Right foot sits anterior, foot eversion pattern. Tibialis anterior and peroneal pain. . Picture 2 - after repositioning of the pelvis and rib cage that had an on-flow down the chain to the feet. 11.01.2022 >>> RIDDLE ME THIS <<< A long distance runner comes to you as a therapist with lateral lower leg pain, hamstring tightness, and QL pain on the same side. . Do you...... . A) Dry needle the shit out of the peroneal muscles, hamstrings and prescribe a generic "glute activation" exercise which means they'll likely last 2 training runs at best. . Or... . B) Realise that there is a serious discrepancy in their deep longitudinal sling, that their "tight" hamstrings are actually weak because they can get their foot over their head, and this dysfunctional sling system is leading to lack of pelvic and sacral stability, leading to lower back pain. And then teach them how to engage their hamstring to help the nervous system "remember" it, while also addressing the inevitable issue at either the foot and/or ribs/pelvis. . If you chose option A, you probably need to read more, think more and take a systems based approach to your practice. 05.01.2022 330kg SQUAT with 2 BROKEN KNEES This is Dyon’s story. Determination, effort, consistency, and presence of mind. Dyon came to me with a list of injury challenges (watch to see) and we set ourselves a goal for his next powerlifting meet. To say I was blown away by his performance is an understatement!! One year on and the team and I are about to hit the platform again, but in Brisbane at the Valhalla Strength Australia Showdown. And rightly so - MANY is the client that I've needed to pull BACK, do LESS and recover MORE in order to kick start progress again. ... . But many have also needed a MUCH BIGGER stimulus to recover from and adapt to in order to reach performance and athletic goals. . Like this new client here with body composition goals that simply haven't been met for years, no matter what she tried and who she went to. . She was adamant that 40kg was all she'd be able to do for about 10 reps with a 3 RIR - so 40kg for potentially 13 reps. I put on my drill sergeant hat and insisted she didn't stop - and what do you know, 30 reps later her RDL's were still looking good but grip gave out. Subsequently, 2 more sets with 60kg - 50% MORE than she's ever used for RDL's before. Also check out the DB row numbers! . THIS is how we... . Break through glass ceilings that LIMIT our success. . 04.01.2022 I'll sleep well tonight! . 300kgx3, the most I've ever done for a triple by 20kg . Followed by 3x2 sleeved tempo squats at 210kg, 4x2 pin presses at 160/165kg, and some reps for hammer curls and rear delt flyes.... . This is a "big weight" for me, so knowing I had very competent spotters and supporters definitely helped the confidence. I’m not recommending you keep sugar intake high by the way. I’m just saying it’s good to understand energy balance so you’re not attributing your success incorrectly. It may not see like a big deal. Like what’s the harm? Well, many will eventually fail because they didn’t understand this concept. They have sugar low, but calories start to come in from other sources and weight is regained. I see it every day!
