23.01.2022 Really pleased with the result from painting this living room wall in Annandale this week after the new flued gas heater was installed. Its Dulux Ecru. Thanks for the job Mary-Louise!

22.01.2022 These photos show the condition of the northern side of a house before I repainted. I scraped off the peeling paint, sanded, cleaned with sugar soap and applied undercoat and two top coats.

22.01.2022 Gladstone Rd, Leura. Here are a few shots of a major garden clean-up I did for a steeply-sloping Blue Mts garden. Some beautiful sandstone pavers saw daylight for the first time in years.

21.01.2022 Yesterday I finished a big job in Petersham for Richard and Margie: completely rebuilding the brick-paved front yard of their 1880s freestanding terrace. This involved sourcing some attractive sandstone blocks at a very nice price through Gumtree from a home renovation job in the Eastern Suburbs (a $3million renovation, no less - that's how they do things in the East), removing all the old brick pavers, levelling the ground, and relaying the bricks with new widers paths. Then I helped plant out the new native garden. As you'll see, it's quite an improvement.

19.01.2022 I've spend a fair bit of time lately on repairing and painting decks and verandahs, most recently at Maggie's place in Young St, Annandale. Here are a few "before" and "after" shots so you can see the results. For the deck I repaired, sanded, scrubbed and painted and did the same for the verandah railing and posts. I used Intergrain decking oil for the boards and Dulux Weathershield semi-gloss for the railing and posts. Thanks to the guys at Booth and Taylor Hardware for matching the colour so perfectly. Maggie was delighted. Me too.

18.01.2022 Jobs for Gav's House and Garden range from the large to the small. This one was small - restoring a lovely coffee table owned by long-term client Maggie of Young St, Annandale. It needed some very careful, steady-handed fine sanding to remove the peeling varnish, then three coats of high-quality varnish, as recommended by my trusty advisors at Booth and Tayler Hardware. It came up very well and has a new lease of life. Here are the before and after pictures...

18.01.2022 I replaced 32 low voltage downlights in this Victorian semi with high-quality, attractive LED lamps from Lighting Matters, saving energy and carbon emissions, and eliminating the need for constant lamp replacements.

15.01.2022 Our next solar info night is March 26 in Marrickville. Book through our events page.

13.01.2022 Had a busy morning at Margie's unit in Allen St, Leichhardt today, transforming the eastern balcony from something a little bare to a place with lots of splashes of colour. Once the plants take hold, this corner of her unit should look lovely.

13.01.2022 I'm back supporting the Alternative Technology Association with my sustainability expertise later this month. I'll be one of the ATA's experts for "Slow date a Sustainability Expert" at the Australian Technology Park on Saturday July 23, offering advice on how to cut your energy use and carbon emissions. If you want to book, check out http://sdse.ata.org.au/.

11.01.2022 It's back! The Alternative Technology Association's Speed Date a Sustainability Expert session is heading to the upper North Shore on Saturday October 22 in the afternoon. I'll be there as one of the energy efficiency experts. If you'd like to attend, get in contact with the ATA fast, as the slots do seem to book out quickly. See http://sdse.ata.org.au/upcoming-events/. Maybe see you there! Gav

10.01.2022 Starting the new year with some serious garden clearing in Piper St, Annandale. I really think people should consider whether bamboo is such a great screening plant. It can look good when smallish but it can so get out of control. It spreads in every direction! Much better in many cases to plant things that will do what they're told and stay in place.

10.01.2022 With Australia in lockdown, my Gav’s House & Garden handyman service for the Inner West has moved to just doing work outside the house. While there are no legal restrictions on handymen like myself working inside your house at this time, I’ve taken a policy decision to limit my work just to those projects I can do outside the house, for your protection and mine. So I’m here ready to help with any gardening, outdoor painting, deck repairs and painting or other carpentry jobs ...you might want done in your garden or outside the house here in the Inner West. To show what I’ve been up to lately, here are the before and after photos for a garden clean-up job completed for Janette in The Boulevarde, Lilyfield, and the results of some painting work two weeks ago for Leeann in Balmain. 09.01.2022 Here's a front garden in Annandale St, Annandale that I renovated last month. I did the walls and garden while my mate Phil Jones rebuilt the timber bridge across to the front verandah.

07.01.2022 Thanks to all for a great turn-up yesterday for the Alternative Technology Association's Slow Date a Sustainability expert in Sydney. I had a wide range of sustainability questions to deal with, but my proudest recommendation was to Phil of Mt St Thomas in Wollongong. He has a 5kw PV system generating far more power than he can use, for which he gets 10 cents as a feed-in tariff, and an electric hot water system using off-peak power that costs 15 cents. So rather than getting 10 cents and paying 15, he's going to put his electric tank on the solar circuit and say goodbye to off-peak electricity. Too easy. I'll be back more sustainability speed dating with the ATA through Randwick Council on September 4. Bookings: sdse.ata.org.au/upcoming-events/

02.01.2022 I was fortunate enough to avoid being out in the rain two weeks ago when I had the job of painting Lisa Hall's physiotherapy room at Newtown Gym. There were repairs needed to the walls, fixing up dings and screw holes, then I scrubbed the whole lot down painted it with Dulux Snowy Mountains Quarter. Here's the before and after...
