17.01.2022 Today we explored children’s interests about shapes and challenged everyone to make the train on the colouring page using different shapes. This was a fantastic stem based opportunity to increase designing skills and also work on resource allocation to create the desired design. Children came up with ideas on how to make the train and how many of each item they need to use to finish making it. ... Finally they decided to make a pretend birthday cake using the left over shapes, using a cardboard box that they painted. We are extending on this learning next week to do categorised summary of each shape, and continue to create more complexed designs.

16.01.2022 Children were interested in counting and identifying colours. This week they are engaged ‘jewellery making’ which involves the use of skills such as hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. This was also a good opportunity for the children to focus on looping the needs carefully using both hands and their thumb, middle and index fingers, while they discussed different colours and shapes. Children also learned the importance of patience while they tried to loop each bead and shared the bowl of beads.

15.01.2022 Who said muffin days are only for baking. We used this old muffin tray as a palette to learn primary and secondary colours. - Children enjoyed exploring and mixing colours to create different new colours in the muffin tray. - They then painted their own creations. This was a great opportunity for children bring in imaginary and sensory skills together with fine motor skills while they used the paint brushes. - At the end we discussed making secondary colours and also about remembering the two colours that make each colour.

03.01.2022 Cinderella story re-telling using these puppet sticks during group circle. Children enjoyed a visual sense of the story where the characters and settings were easily elaborated and understood for comprehension. The extension to this was a sequencing activity which enhances the knowledge of children’s story sequences and structure. Children can also learn character attributes and also about how the solution to the main problem was fixed.

02.01.2022 Stem challenge cards Children engaged in a challenging stem activity last week. They used a task card and picked the challenge to design a pizza using LEGO. They decided to use a square shaped pizza with some topping on top. This was a fantastic opportunity to bring out the fine motor skills, hand eye coordination together with constructive skills that involved problem solving and some imagination too.
