25.01.2022 I spend a great deal of time immersed in data. If you look closely the numbers can tell you a story about reader behaviour and about opportunity. This week my magnifying glass was focused on a newsletter we've been running for six months. I was concerned we were failing the readers, but the numbers told me a different story. We weren't failing, we were totally over performing on all engagement metrics. I outline the details below and I've asked the readers to give us feedback. I'm already overwhelmed with their response. The exercise has been a good reminder to me to check the data, read between the lines and ALWAYS talk to your readers.

25.01.2022 When young people leave regional areas they often take with them the new ideas, valuable skills and local knowledge that can help their home towns prosper into the future.

23.01.2022 The Illawarra Mercury today have printed their front page in the language of the Dharawal people, the indigenous people of Australia, as part of NAIDOC Week. A fantastic initiative from digital journalist Tareyn Varley which we should work to achieve more than once a year.

We want to tell the climate change story from the frontline in our communities and to show the work many are doing to make a positive change. 09.01.2022 Yes, we feel your pain.

09.01.2022 I wrote this a while back and have updated ever so slightly after a flurry of questions and discussions about how entry level journalists get started in their career. I spent five years doing unpaid work experience before my first paid role, but the opportunities for on the job experience are ironically becoming less and less as we become more technologically advanced. Here are some tips on what you CAN do.

08.01.2022 "Captain Dan Montelli says he comes from the world's best wine-producing region. On that we disagree."

07.01.2022 I spent some time this morning trying to catalogue my Australian Community colleagues' coverage of the fires across NSW and Victoria over the last six weeks. It was a overwhelming job as some of these pictures will show. I've never been prouder to work for ACM and to be a local news journalist. ... Our journalists and photographers have worked tirelessly to keep their communities informed, often while their own properties are at risk. When they have been dead on their feet with exhaustion, they have continued to work to let people know what the fires left behind and how people are pulling together. When this bushfire season ends, they will still be there supporting their communities and helping them to rebuild. Wherever you live, if you don't yet subscribe to your local news publisher. Do it today. You need us to tell these stories and we need your support to continue to do what we do. Pics copyright of Australian Community Media

06.01.2022 Firefighters have been working through the night on the NSW North Coast and our journalists are on the front line keeping the community informed. Let’s hope everyone gets some relief soon.

06.01.2022 Why the front pages of every major newspaper in Australia are blacked out today #rightoknow

06.01.2022 This is why regional journalism is worth paying for. My colleague at the Illawarra Mercury, Ben Langford has worked on this story for weeks. I've watched his frustration as he is passed from pr officer to pr officer in his efforts to get answers for residents in Wollongong. It's work like this which makes regional journalism so important to our communities. We don't have answers to which buildings in Wollongong have combustible cladding but Ben will keep digging, because that's his job and when we get the answers the Illawarra Mercury will be first to share the information.

04.01.2022 It has been a busy week in politics here in Australia and abroad.

02.01.2022 "There is a journey we, as a nation, must take. No matter what." says Australian Community Media's group news editor Janine Graham.

01.01.2022 To put this into perspective. This is a 354km stretch which takes at least four and a half hours to drive end to end. That's the equivalent in miles of driving from London to Newcastle upon Tyne.
